Rewatching Revolutionary Girl Utena a Literal Decade Later - Season 1
So the first time I watched Utena was back in high school, where I didn’t have the tools nor the courage to admit I was into girls. So during that first watch I was very much that “they’re such good friends” kind of viewer. But now its 2020, and I’m bi and maaaaaaybe there’s something more to Anthy and Utena’s relationship. I don’t know its just a hunch I have.
Anyway this is just going to be me making disparate comments on the show that I didn’t notice (or sometimes just avoided noticing) during my first viewing. So if you’re expecting me to explain what Revolutionary Girl Utena’s about...lol. @vraik did an in-deph look into the show if you want explanations that makes sense, and you can also see the episodes on Youtube both subbed and dubbed if you just put the name in (i’m not brave enough to watch dubbed that will forever be a mystery to me) and there’s tons of videos talking about the show’s themes and what it means to them. So this? It’s just going to be nonsense in bullet-point form. So let’s begin!
A Road Paved with Bad Endings - Nightshade
You know why it takes so long to talk about Nameless Bad Endings? Because they’re so complicated and different from each other! There’s so many bad endings. So. Many. Bad. Endings. So why don’t we shift gears and talk about a game that limits itself to one bad ending per boy. Sometimes you get otome games where each ending is unique and fucked up in their own special way. And then sometimes its just “And then they died.” And you know what? Those endings can be just as valid. So lets get to these shinobis and ninjas and Naruto has corrupted my vision of ninjas permanently I am so sorry.
Nightshade is about Enju, daughter of the Koga Clan’s leader and the sister of the Iga Clan leader. After the Iga Clan was destroyed in a war the Koga Clan absorbed the survivors. Because of this Enju is seen as the glue keeping the Koga and Iga Clan together, and is treasured by the villagers. But Enju wants to be a real shinobi and go on missions like everyone else. One day she gets her wish, and travels with her childhood friends and mentor to complete a mission. Good news, she completed the mission! Bad news, she gets accused of killing the ruler right after.
On the way she travels with her childhood friend and bodyguard Gekkamaru, her other childhood friend and Gekkamaru’s brother Kuroyuki, and her mentor and cousin (oh no) Chojiro, as well as meeting a cold-hearted powerful ninja from another clan, Hanzo, and a libertine totally-not-a-gentleman-thief Goemon. Who’s going to be with Enju beyond the game of life-and-death she’s been forced into? Or in this case, who’s going to see her literal end?
General Thoughts on This Bad End Journey
So before I get to the boys I’ll just do an overview on how choices work here. Note that I’m playing the Switch Version. You got the boys. You got choices. First four chapters you make choices that the boy you want likes and then in chapter five that’s when the route starts (though some routes start a bit early, but each route’s choices still start in Chapter 5.) If you go to the Relationships in the Menu you’ll notice the line of boys and under each one is a line of flowers. Every time you pick a choice a boy would like, the flowers will flash on screen and the next time you check the Relationships you’ll see the flower line begin to fill in with color. Whoever’s flower is colored in the most until chapter 4 will begin the route in 5, and to get the good end you need to continue filling the line with color as much as possible. Don’t fill the line by the end? Bad Ending.
This makes it pretty simple to get the ending you want. Quick Save, make a choice, see the flowers, good. Make a choice, don’t see the flowers, bad, quick load. I’d recommend Quick Saving continuously if you’re like me and can’t stop smashing buttons like I’m trying to speedrun (I can read pretty fast) because if you’re not paying attention you’ll “A” yourself right into picking the first option of a choice that popped up. I did this more times than I would like to admit to.
On the content of the choices themselves, they’re good at connecting to the themes of each boy, so even though you can depend on the flower pop-up to keep you on the path you want you can intuitively see which choices work. This is not true for all otome games.
The Bad Endings themselves basically all lead to the same place - dead and sad. Enju dies, then boy. Or boy dies, then Enju. But each ending differentiates itself in the various flavors of how the deaths occurs and the reaction to it. Also there’s one sad song for all the bad endings and it is a mood. Despite the simplicity of it these endings do genuinely make me sad because Enju is a cutie and I love her and how dare you do this to her and dangit now I’m fond of the boys and now they’re sad and now I’m sad and I’m listening to a sad credit song and want to eat ice cream in a empty bathtub and cry for some reason. So lets be sad...together.
Spoilers for each route. Warning for Descriptions of Death and Suicide.
A Road Paved with Bad Endings - Nameless ~The One Thing You Must Recall~
It’s been eighty years since my last one so to remind everyone this is a series about bad ends in otome games - currently I’m talking about the bad ends in Nameless and I already did Lance’s bad endings. This one’s going to be about Yeonho’s.
Yeonho - Bought Used, Highly Damaged, Needs Proper Care
Oh Yeonho. Sweet. sweet little Yeonho. Made to instill mother instincts in young ladies. Surely his route will just be ADORABLE right...right!?
Okay so Yeonho has some serious issues stemming from an extremely painful past (which is bad enough as a doll but then when translated to human terms YIKES) and most of his route is about confronting that past. Sure there are cute moments here and there, but mainly its just about how to confront the things that were done to him and how to cope in a more healthy way.
One thing I’m not keen on is that with these kind of characters (I will elaborate on this when talking about the bad ends) I wish they just left out the romance aspect altogether. So much of this route is about understanding Yeonho’s trauma and how it affects his view of the world, that its not until the last couple of chapters that the writers were like, “oh FUCK this is an otome game they’re supposed to date” and slapped on two or three romantic scenes. It doesn’t help that in this route compared to the other routes it’s painfully clear that Eri favoring Yeonho can go real bad for both of them if not treated correctly. I’m worried about them is what I’m saying.
If you are suffering from abandonment and/or other forms of abuse, this route might make you uncomfortable. I say they do a not-bad job in confronting trauma, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be the same experience with you.
Also two of these three ending go into the “WTF WTF WTF” end of the bad end spectrum, and they do include implied violence and assault so tread lightly.
A Road Paved with Bad Endings - Nameless ~The One Thing You Must Recall~
Lance - Bought New, Popular and Mass-Produced
Lance is a straight-laced silver-haired young man, who likes to keep everything neat and tidy and hates messes. He can act very cold, and can act harsh even toward Eri, but he is protective of her, and does not put up with other dolls bothering her, especially Red and Yuri. Anytime Yuri tries to flirt with Eri in a way that upsets her, Lance has a slipper in hand ready to strike. In his route its clear that even though he acts cold he, like all of her dolls, cares for Eri. It’s just that as a doll, who’s personality was meant to be malleable for their owner to shape, Lance feels he doesn’t have enough of an identity to be interesting.
Lance was Eri’s First Doll, and he’s expected to be your first route. His route and the ending involved foreshadow story beats later, but its mainly a way to dip your toes into what routes will be like and how even the most composed doll gots some issuuuuuuuues.
I will say that when Eri and Lance get together in the end I am...the least concerned about their relationship. It does get a little cliche and then it gets more intimate than I expected, but overall its a good start. Now lets ruin it with bad endings.

A Road Paved with Bad Endings - Nameless ~The One Thing You Must Recall~
Introduction
Hello void. It seems I once again got hooked on a game that’s no longer relevant in the current space. I feel like I’m writing a note left in an empty house, hoping that at least someone out there decides to head in and find it. Except its not one note they’ll find it’ll be like twenty, and they’ll probably be very concerned for my tastes.
Because I like otome games for story and cute moments and all but do you know what I really want in otome games? Well-written bad endings. Horrifying endings that you lose sleep over. Creepy ending that are cut short leaving you wanting to know more. Cafe AU Endings? Those are good too!
And Nameless in particular has a lot of varied bad endings to go around, ranging from “oh okay back to the previous save” to “WTF WTF WTF WTF-”. From being run over by a truck for being disinterested in following the route you picked to losing all your memories and working in a cafe, to spoiler-y endings that will leave you screaming inside your mind for the rest of the day, it sure is an adventure.
If you haven’t played Nameless before, I recommend you do. Basically the story is about a high school girl (default name is Eri) who collects these ball-jointed dolls from this store called Crobidoll. There’s Lance, the most popular doll who wasn’t given a default personality trait, Yeonho, a sweet doll that brings out motherly instincts, Yuri, a mature and stylish drummer, Tei, a premium limited edition doll who can make you a real good cup of tea, and Red, an action hero doll who protects Earth. Lance and Yuri were bought new, Yeonho and Tei were bought second-hand, and Red was given away to Eri to test whether it’ll gain popularity, which sadly it never did.
Eri’s lives alone in her late grandpa’s house (her parents travel for work a lot) until one morning all her dolls come to life. I’m sure these dolls, who’s only experience in life is through their experience as dolls, will act like fully-functional humans and everything will be great!
Its essentially a visual novel-style game where every once in awhile you get to pick choices (and at some points you don’t make choice for whole chapters) that’ll either keep you on the road to a good end, give you an opportunity to see certain events, or lead you into Bad End Land.
Now I’ll let you get to experience each route’s happy end for yourself. I on the other hand, am just going to talk about the bad endings, starting with Lance, who only has two bad endings, of which are pretty tame compared to the later ones. If someone happens to find this, stick around why don’t you.
