“Communion with divinity is sometimes compared to a feast between two lovers in which wine flows in abundance—divine intoxication, erotic ecstasy.”
― Octavio Paz, The Double Flame: Love and Eroticism (translated by Helen Lane)
The role of Helios in PGM III gets interesting once you understand the "shadow" that the magician wants to control as the soul. By invoking Helios, the magician wants to see the shadow that is the soul that is the personal daimon, and thus control their own self.
For more details, Eleni Pachoumi elaborates this much in her book The Concepts of the Divine in the Greek Magical Papyri, specifically when discussing PGM III. 612-32:
The magician thus strives to contact the shadow that is the soul that is the daimon, the part of themselves that is divine and also of the other side, in the underworld, or of the dead, in order that they might then control their own soul or self. With the help of the power of Helios, the magician aims to acheive a mystical identification with their own shadow.
Spirits don't care if it's conventionally too early in the morning for shots of whiskey.

"I call upon Helios + Thoth + Christ + Jewish God + Hekate + Ten Thousand Angels + Ten Thousand Demons + Hermes + John + Paul + George + Ringo + L + Ratio to make the other team's racehorse shit itself and die"
Ah yes, the syncretism of syncretisms....
Who did you dedicate this phylactery to with all these names?
HA, BETTER QUESTION IS WHO DIDN'T I DEDICATE IT TO?
Tips for gathering your magical herbs
Pour out a libation and pray
Mind your moon and stars
Use your left hand
Look away
Make a circle around the spirit with an iron blade to keep it locked in place
Cut with bronze as to not kill it
Gather any dripping sap or nectar into a shell
The same stream you’re tapping into when you pray and perform ritual is the one that’s entered during your spells.
Use that to your advantage.
“Ask her what she craved, and she’d get a little frantic about things like books, the woods, music. Plants and the seasons. Also freedom.”
— Charles Frazier; Nightwoods
I think something people tend to forget about folk magic is prior to the internet, for many people, it wasn't about learning how to do everything. Like, some people specialized in divination and omens. Some people specialized in laying and breaking hexes. Some people specialized in healing. You'd pick who you went to based on your current situation.
I think practitioners should embrace that more: not expecting ourselves to learn how to do everything. Today's magic and witchy communities put so much pressure on learning how to do everything for yourself, but personally I think that kills the beauty of community. It's perfectly fine to narrow your interests and go to those you trust for something you aren't sure how to do yourself.

edit: terfs fuck off
lots of "Don't read" lists floating around witchblr these days and I get the point but babes that ain't the way. Should be, "read when bored but only if stolen and file as good example of poor authorship"
y'all are gonna be afraid of books and wonder why you know squat about squat and that's awful conservative fundementalist behavior. our people should not be emulating book burners. we should be reading the most embarrassing takes and cackling into the night about dj conway and sharing our observations about bad data not hiding under the bed cuz someone said Buckland.
what if I told you that checking out a hilariously shitty book from the library still benefits the library
if you’re old enough to read about literal witchcraft you’re old enough to do so critically. what happens when a new author gets overnight popular and you eat their nazi shit with a spoon because your only means of validating information is referring to blacklists that author isn’t on yet. That doesn’t benefit you, doesn’t make you a more finely honed researcher, doesn’t help you separate wheat from chaff. it’s lazy and intellectually irresponsible and a brain is a terrible thing to waste.
some of you will never know the comedic rollercoaster of reading Full Contact Magick in one sitting and boy are you ever missing out
Here we go again with the not every malicious female from folklore or mythology is a misunderstood feminist goddess.
With a side of consider why you need spirits to be empowering to you over taking their original mythology and culture into consideration, and why you might be insisting on interpreting feminine entities as misunderstood at worst.
Consider working with them anyway.
There is demon work with entities that wouldn’t think twice about biting you in a debt contract.
Greek magicians called on the dangerous vengeful dead as well as the malicious entities of the underworld like the Empusa.
Something being a malicious entity hasn’t stopped witches and magicians before.
I would love a PGM tarot reading 🙏❤️

One of your cards has a talisman for gaining the favor of people in your presence. It also has a message from the Iliad: “and to the victor are to go the women and possessions.”
You aren’t giving yourself the credit you deserve. Celebrate you, you’ve worked hard. Over indulge a bit.
Cards: Artemis, 6 of wands reversed, Dionysos, Ace of Pentacles.
