Back in 2017... I was just a dweeby kid in my room, my sanctuary.
Salem7 started out in a bedroom, so it only made sense for the debut collection lookbook to be shot in a bedroom :)
Check out this little throwback from 5 years ago... Zane shot this whole thing on a Super 8 camera, back when he didn't believe in filters or colour correction, only to be humbled and realise why no one shoots on Super 8. For starters, the film is overly expensive, you gotta take it to a professional to develop and you never know how good the footage will actually be until it's actually processed. But that's all just a part of the magic of creating stuff. I cringe at some of the products I was selling at the time... For example, the clout goggles, ugh, hahah. But it's also super wholesome looking back at these sorta videos from that time and seeing how much Zane has improved in his movie making skills too. We were kids together.
Picked up my Mini Dv cam and made my boyfriend put on some dollar store gloves to show off The Merlin Shades in true infomercial style. I remember knowing it was way past my bedtime when these kinda ads would show up on my grandparents' TV. They were always so boring and I could never understand how anyone would actually order something from those adds... And yet, here I am trying to replicate it. I think, more than trying to sell you something, just the creative process behind promoting these products is so fun for me. Even just having to drive to some place to pay a guy $50 to transfer the tape... to make this piece of shit that is so long and tacky and boring that it forces me into this sort of half-smile, and then I start cracking up because I hate it and I love it and it's just so obvious that we're just having fun here.
Bringing ideas to life (no matter how stupid) is what it's all about. If just one person buys the glasses from this video, then fuck yeah... at least we had fun.
Hey wassup, it's Lee Solo :)
I'm the founder and artist behind Salem7! I wanted to start blogging as a way to connect with you all in a different way. Posting on most social media apps, everything feels so fast paced and disposable, we all have such short attention spans these days. So it's nice to put something out and just kinda, leave it at that. I'm not trying to go viral or anything on here, I just wanna say some words for anybody who cares to listen.
Like, 10 years ago, blogging was my absolute sanctuary. I'm a sucker for the nostalgia trips so it's nice to be here. I'm still figuring out what I want to do with the Salem7 blog. Maybe I'll share some behind-the-scenes stuff, break down some cool ideas I've had, or post some funny dog videos. I could also interview other artists, skaters, or nerds, Might even dig up some fun content from the archives. Who knows? It's all up in the air for now.
Anyways, happy Friday... anyone.
