The Customer Advocate exists to try to solve problems before they end up as complaints in the hands of the government. They will also be the contacts responsible for trying to solve any complaints you file with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

An open letter to Sallie -

Dear Sallie Mae,

Reform your customer service to make it responsive to customer needs.Your agents are currently the worst in the field. Your company's practice of shifting call centers overseas has resulted in absurdly low quality and drastic amounts of misinformation shared with your customers. The absolute worst are the foreign agents, who seem to dish out solely misinformation. You and I both know that these are hardly isolated incidents. Until you fix this, I will continue to distribute Holly Lorelli's email address and imploring borrowers to submit complaints about agents to her.

Add a chat feature to your website. Chatting with customer service will allow your customers to retain written records of their dealings with your misleading agents and help allow them greater access to answering questions. All of your competitors have a chat feature.

Stop cheating the troops. Enough is enough. You'll pay your fine and you'll be back to the same old tactics. I want you to ensure your company will stick to it this time by increasing transparency, by advertising benefits for the troops AND everyone else on the front page of your website, not hidden away somewhere.

Make major improvements to your website. There is extremely limited access to forms, no access to certain kinds of information, like the options for reducing payments - Interest Rate Reduction Programs, Interest Only options, etc. How are people supposed to know? Your website is quite obviously set up to capture new customers and to offer the LEAST amount of help to borrows. Fix that.

Stop charging for Forbearance. This is absurd. If someone cannot make monthly payments, what makes you think they can afford to pay $150 for each loan? You need to stop.

Do not buy it.

But really, I looked at the fine print, it's pretty terrible. I mean, look at this:

• Coverage maximum varies from 1 to 11 months depending on the state

• Pre-existing conditions are excluded (does not apply to newborn or newly adopted children added to coverage)

• 72 hour waiting period applies for illnesses when coverage is purchased within 3 days of the effective date. No waiting period applies to injuries.

So it's basically another scam through Sallie Mae to make money off another aspect of your life. And its nearly illegal. No coverage of pre-existing conditions? Didn't Obamacare change that? You bet your ass. These guys are in a legal gray zone.

DO NOT BUY THIS.

There's an all out ASSAULT on Sallie Mae's facebook.

Numerous individuals are posting a Huffington Post news story about auto-default's when a cosigner dies, where usually after a parent dies, Sallie Mae puts the loan immediately into default and asks for payment in full. All this while the borrower is grieving a parents loss. Its DESPICABLE! If you have student loans, this could happen to you.

Customer Service: Secret Numbers

What is going on with Sallie Mae? It seems like every time you call, you need to spend 15 minutes waiting just to talk to someone. And then these idiot reps have no idea how to help you.

Their goal is to find any way to get you to shut up. They stick to a script, they try to avoid suggesting programs which could really help you but cost them money over the term of your loan. Its a frustrating and often futile experience. But what if I told you I figured out how their system works?

All calls to their main number,1-888-272-5543, are directed to call centers where people have foreign accents. Sallie Mae is known to operate a call bank in the Philippines, and probably has one or several in India. You will always end up getting answered by these people if you call this number.

There are other options. They have a Payments department, they have a Collections department (who are the only people who can offer you the Interest Rate Reduction Program), and they have a Social Media Team.

Depending on what you’re doing, try these numbers:

Collections Department - 877-905-4157

Social Media Team - 570-821-3600

Payments Department - 888-545-4199

And if you have used other numbers or found more helpful people, post them here! The only way we’re going to beat Sallie is if we all work together.

PS - I've found the social media team to be very helpful. In fact, they're often able to do things that other reps will tell you is 'impossible.' And the Collections Dept seem to be the ones who have the ability to put you on alternative payment plans, or change how a payment was applied. Good luck!

Reminder: File formal complaints when your lender is too hard to work with

If you're pulling out your hair over bad customer service agents, stuck in the vicious loop or getting day and night calls from affiliates of your lender, you can file a formal complaint with the federal government. This works for ALL lenders. The government will require them to respond to your complaint, and they'll bring out the higher-ups who speak clear english and will avoid yelling at you, because they don't want to get fined.
