constantly torn between " the salt of solidarity is an incredibly disciplined person that saw indulging in things like alcohol as incredibly irresponsible given his position " and " well. of the virtues, he was far and away the most integrated into cookie society. surely he's tried it before. "

//sometimes i think about the trials of kala namak and how insane is it that the second test is like. borderline psychological torture. to be granted knighthood, you are going to be forced to relive your greatest regrets, deepest fears, and/or possible traumas, all of which can and will physically harm you. this is not optional. it's been said that it took most knights many, many tries to pass the trials, and i promise you this was the biggest hurdle for most of them ;; not for a lack of trying, but because it's just too much. the salt of solidarity refuses to pull his punches with this one.

//like. there's this ruthlessness about the salt of solidarity that's sort of understated, but is very important. his capacity for cruelty, when he deems it necessary, is incredibly high.

//the first and third trials are tests of solidarity, meant to assert and apply everything squires have been taught in high stress scenarios similar to those in real conflicts. the second trial uses your past to beat you down over, and over, and over again, and demands that you get back up. it's cruel by design ;; not everyone is fit to be a knight, and if you can't make peace with the past lord commander doesn't trust you to forge a better future. and if you can get through that, you can get through anything.

also funky fresh reminder that shadow milk, burning spice, mystic flour, eternal sugar, golden cheese, hollyberry, and dark cacao were all put through judgement of silence. so if y'all have any input as to what they went through in there i'm all ears

a list of silent salt's powers and abilities because i didn't like how the old one was formatted ( feat. my headcanons / canon divergencies )

immortality.

completely incapable of aging. silent salt is the eldest of the beasts, and one of the first beings ever made by the witches.

retrocognition.

the ability to see past events silent salt did not witness himself. can only be used when a witness of said event is present.

illusory magic.

can create hyperrealistic illusions from salt, mimicking appearances and voices with extreme accuracy. capable of harming people. can be destroyed easily. often used in tandem with his retrocognition, most notably in the second trial of the kala namak knights.

enhanced physical abilities.

extreme strength and speed. capable of jumping hundreds of miles into the air, crumbling cookies in only one blow, and crossing large expanses in the blink of an eye. of the beasts, he is physically the second strongest ( behind burning spice ) and the fastest by a long shot.

enhanced durability.

difficult to harm in a way that matters. capable of temporarily dissolving into salt ;; completely dismembering pieces of his body from one another ;; and draining the life force of living things to heal himself. often does not resort to using these abilities.

pyromancy.

can create, summon, and control flames at will. has a natural resistance to fire and fire magic.

necromancy.

can summon, communicate with and give corporeal form and voice to lingering spirits. can bind the souls of his victims to the world of the living by force, turning them into wraiths.

flight.

can hover several feet off the ground. not capable of true flight, like shadow milk and eternal sugar.

other abilities.

can create / summon shackles and chains at will. can blast destructive beams of concentrated energy with the slash of his sword. can rearrange the layout of the catacombs of silence at will. extremely strong emotions are capable of manifesting their own physical form ( best seen in silent salt's living grudge ;; a monster made from all of his rage and grief, left to fester for hundreds of thousands of years. )

witch's magic.

deeply knowledgeable on witch's magic and can read most spells with some level of understanding, even if unable to ( or unsure how to ) cast them. can commune with his creator. can summon divine forks.

judgement of silence.

the most extreme version of the second trial of the kala namak knights, utilizing silent salt's retrocognition, illusory, and necrotic abilities. it freezes the body, and traps the mind and soul in a vacuum of silent salt's making, wherein the victim is forced to relive every horrible experience they've ever had, and every bad decision they've ever made. though it technically carries the same cruel test of worthiness as the second trial, judgement of silence is used by him as a method of torture. the only way out is if the victim convinces him to let them go, or his concentration is broken ( whether that be of his own volition, or his body being attacked. )

i like to think all the beasts had slightly different experiences in the silver tree -- and the combination of salt already being on the brink of death at the time of the sealing spell's casting, the halving of his soul jam, and his continued fuelling of the seal sapping his power at about the same rate as it regenerated was not kind to him. not quite comatose, but almost trapped in that state of being half - asleep ;; drifting in and out of consciousness, barely cognizant of his surroundings ( certainly not enough to hold any meaningful conversation. ) aware that time is passing, but incapable of knowing how much.

this didn't change until the first time the seal was at risk of breaking. or rather, when white lily fixed it. ( the light cut through the gaping hole in the tree like a sunbeam shining through a break in the clouds. whether the others noticed him reaching for it, or thought anything of it, he doesn't know -- but he recalls the feeling of warmth meeting his extended hand, something like vines wrapping around his arm. a call and response between two halves of a whole. for better or for worse, it left him with enough energy to more easily exist in the silver tree. in the most technical sense, this was his first interaction with white lily cookie. )
