Common loons are known for their haunting soliloquy of cries, wails, yodels. Their eerie birdsong can often be heard over the lakes of Minnesota & serves a wide variety of purposes: defending territory, signally distress, alerting others to danger, locating young, & maintaining close familial bonds.

Your neighbor means immigrants. Your neighbor means queer kids. Your neighbor means people who use drugs. Your neighbor means folks without a roof over their heads. Your neighbor means people locked behind bars. Your neighbor means that guy yelling out his grief on the corner. Your neighbor means that single mom trying desperately to make it work. Your neighbor means people who look, behave, live like you do AND your neighbor means people who don’t look, behave, live like you do.

Loving means respecting. Loving means fighting for. Loving means standing bodily in harm’s way. Loving always means risk and loving is always worth it.

to love this land is not to stand stricken as the flames engulf every branch, every thrush, every bud, every twig, every hare-hollow

your tilled & tended acreage, your neighbor’s -

eyes wide, bent low, skin-licked, sweat-speckled.

to love this land is to pull the grieving mound of your body -

toe-stubbed, bramble-bled, stumble-struck

to the well to fill the bucket

to the fire to empty the bucket

to the well, to the well, to the well to the well.

to fill the bucket with your grief until it overflows -

hold it there in a vessel that knows what to do with it so that it will not pool up & tie knots about your ankles -

to save every branch, every thrush, every bud, every twig, every hare-hollow that you can.

and you cannot save them all.

and you can know this.

and this does not empty the blisters of their hot-clear-juice.

but you love this land by trying to save it all

long past realizing that you cannot.
