When you were a kid and stole your friends’ toys, your parent probably asked you this angry hypothetical: “How do you think that made them feel?” But what if you actually could feel what another person is feeling? This week, we travel to a future where humans have invented an empathy machine.
I participated in Gizmodo’s Meanwhile In The Future podcast with Rose Eveleth! It was a fun chat about empathy machines, which we tied back in a bit to my story “Screens.”

Happy to say that the contract for “Sharp Teeth” to appear in the MONSTERS! anthology has been signed and delivered, so everything’s shipshape with that.
I need to start getting my calendar worked out for another round of submissions soon, so I can prioritize my queue. I’ve been slacking the last few weeks but it’s probably a good time to get back on top of things!
One of my favorite books on the subject, and long past time for a reread.

Very happy to announce that my story “Starflowers” will appear in the anthology Enough Space For Everyone Else, a collection of “comics, prose and illustration about space with a non-imperialist bent.”

Another update on MONSTERS!
The MONSTERS! Kickstarter made its funding, and the first stretch goal, which means it will include my story “Sharp Teeth” when published. I’m so excited to be included.

Apex Magazine recently announced that their issue coming out in September will be their second international SF-themed issue. I love reading speculative fiction that reaches outside the boxes media tends to end up in. I’m looking forward to reading this!

I missed when this first went up, but Lightspeed Magazine is still open for another few weeks. I definitely need to get something out to this market, too. It’s a busy time right now!
Progress Update
This weekend is cleaning up and formatting drafts for submission, one to Uncanny magazine and one to Defying Doomsday, an anthology of apocalypse-survival fiction with a focus on disabled and chronically ill characters. I’m very excited about both stories and looking forward to sending them off.
“A Thousand Heartbeats” is going to Uncanny, and “Spider-Silk, Strong as Steel” is going to Defying Doomsday. We’ll see how it goes!

Uncanny Magazine will be open to short story submissions from June 16-23! They’ve been closed to submissions for quite a while, so I’m excited to see this. Time to go through my files and choose what to send in.

I’m very excited to announce the launch of a Kickstarter by Silence In The Library Publishing to fund the anthology MONSTERS!
This is a very cool anthology with some great authors involved. From the Kickstarter info:
There is something in all of us that is both terrified and exhilarated by the unknown. Through the ages, we’ve given various forms to our fears. Vampires. Werewolves. Zombies. MONSTERS!
But are we really afraid of the monsters, or of ourselves…?
Silence in the Library Publishing is excited to bring you our latest anthology, MONSTERS!, a collection of short fiction about things that creep, crawl, bite, go bump in the night, and make us wonder “Hey, who turned out the lights?”
“Sharp Teeth,” a story by me, is included among the stretch goals of MONSTERS! If the fundraiser not only makes the primary goal of $7,500 but hits $8,500, “Sharp Teeth” will be included! Of course I would love to see this happen, and to share this story with you.

Another story, “Sharp Teeth,” is currently in a bit of limbo; it’s been accepted as a stretch goal for an anthology that’s about to go to Kickstarter. So if the Kickstarter reaches not only its primary goal but one of its stretch goals, the story will be purchased and included. That Kickstarter opens soon, and I will be posting more information and linking to it here as soon as it does. It’s going to be an awesome anthology and I’m very excited to tell you about it.
