Lost because his old life was a life of illusion An illusion ripped away of his own volition.
All because of his lack of better judgement when it came to understanding the beat of the human heart.
For a while he drifted in and out of different realms.
None of which appealed to his nature.
None of which were bad in and of themselves, but they just didn't fit.
Eventually his travels led him into a new realm to which he had never been.
There were aspects there that reminded him of the land of his birth and therefore it gave the appearance of welcome.
The people there- They seemed of like mind and good mirth so a community was formed.
From that communion was born a new temple with all followers espousing faith in the new religion.
And the traveler- he became the loudest voice in the congregation.
He proselytized to all that would listen about the greatness of the truth that he had found.
The other congregates often seemed perplexed by his genuine devotion- Not having known that this was the first time in his life that he truly felt a part of something greater than himself.
Because of this he turned a blind eye-
... Even when the cracks appeared in the foundation.
... Even when the parishioners turned on one another.
... Even when the parishioners turned on him.
... Even when the walls of the temple fell to the ground.
Like all temples before- this one too was an illusion.
The faith of the formerly faithless also... an illusion.
Therefore the temple was torn asunder and the factions....
They seemed to rejoice in the devastation that they wrought. Â
The traveler found himself an apostate.
The lone practitioner of a faith no more.
He no longer shouted from the rooftops.
He no longer tried to convert.
Yet somehow everyone knew he still believed.
They knew that he still recited silent prayers of a hope unwavering. Â
Of the rekindling of a community lost.
So again and again they danced upon the ruins of the temple and broke his heart as they sought to raise the new gods to lofty heights.
With each stroke of the hammer and each twist of the blade salvation drifted further away... yet he was fool enough to believe that he could still reach it.
Sometimes he had my pity.
Not because he was a martyr.
Not because he was a saint.
But because he was human.
Because he is all of us that ever dared to believe.
