University of Salford Presents: Matters of Order and Chaos A Visual Arts Exhibition

Matters of Order and Chaos exhibits exclusive work that marks the beginning of final year study for this selected group of BA (Hons) Visual Arts students at the University of Salford. Each artist was commissioned by the University Arts Curator Lindsay Taylor, and Senior Lecturer Sam Ingleson to produce three artworks during this summer. The resulting exhibition includes 18 new works informed by illustration, painting, photography, collage, and digital print.

A subject pertinent in a contemporary sense, the artists discuss the juxtaposition between order and chaos. Concepts of order are challenged; established ideas and recognized images recast. The collective react to the impossibility of one state existing without the other. These are visual responses inhabited by the tension between two opposing ideas.

As graduation approaches, this group of artists face a pivotal time; the most challenging of their academic career so far. They are now beginning to equip themselves for the creative sector that lies beyond their degree course. How the students proceed from this exploration to their final degree show should prove fascinating to observe. The next wave is coming, and this exhibition is an opportunity to join them on their way.

VISIO. European Programme on Artists’ Moving Images

5th edition Florence, November 15-20, 2016

VISIO consists of an exhibition and a series of seminars and meetings dedicated to expanding the vision and themes of artists, who use moving images in their artistic practice. By promoting encounters and international mobility, VISIO has favoured the development of a wide network of institutions, artists and professionals working with moving images.

The VISIO Programme, curated by Leonardo Bigazzi, will be held in Florence, within the context of the 9th Edition of Lo schermo dell'arte Film Festival (16th - 20th November 2015). The participants will be 12 young European artists, who work with moving images; they will be selected with an open call, in collaboration with some of the most important European Art Academies, Schools and Artist Residencies. Thanks to the generous contribution of our partners, this year there will be no participation fee.

The deadline to apply is October 3rd 2016.

After the success of the exhibition held at Palazzo Strozzi in 2015, this year one video work for each of the 12 participating artists will be selected for a new exhibition project: VISIO. Outside The Black Box (16th Nov – 20th Nov, 2016). The exhibition will take place at the Cinema Teatro La Compagnia in Florence. The building, converted in 1987 into a theatre by Adolfo Natalini, founder of the famous radical architecture firm Superstudio in the late 1960s, will soon re-open as a cinema dedicated to documentary and art-house films. Questioning traditional film formats, the selected works will be displayed in the hidden spaces of the former theatre that usually are not accessible to the public. The exhibition is produced and organized by Lo schermo dell’arte Film Festival in collaboration with FST-Mediateca Regionale Toscana. Also confirmed for the second edition is the VISIO Young Talent Acquisition Prize that will be assigned to one of the participating artists and consists in the acquisition of one of his/her video works by the Seven Gravity Collection, private Italian collection that focuses on video works by contemporary artists. Through this Prize Lo schermo dell’arte Film Festival, thanks to the partnership with the Seven Gravity Collection, aims to support young artists by promoting the practice of collecting moving images works and video installations.

As a result of the research and debate generated by the Programme over the past five years, an extensive publication will be published in the spring of 2017 by Mousse Publishing. The book will feature contributions by leading international curators, artists and critics and a section dedicated to all the artists that have participated in the programme.

VISIO - European Programme on Artists’ Moving Images is promoted and organized by Lo Schermo dell’Arte Film Festival with the generous support of Regione Toscana, Comune di Firenze, and Ente Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze/Osservatorio per le Arti Contemporanee.

The project is organized in collaboration with Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi e FST-Mediateca Regionale Toscana and is also supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Italy, the Deutsches Institut Florenz, the Institut français Firenze, the Seven Gravity Collection and Cecchi.

The selection of the participants is conducted in partnership with the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera (Milan), the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze, Kingston University (London), De Ateliers (Amsterdam), the Pavillon Neuflize OBC research lab of the Palais de Tokyo (Paris), LE FRESNOY Studio national des arts contemporains (Tourcoing), the Piet Zwart Institute (Rotterdam), the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten (Amsterdam), the Royal College of Art (London), the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (Copenhagen), Viafarini (Milan), the Vilnius Academy of Arts, Universität der Künste Berlin, WIELS, Contemporary Art Centre (Bruxelles), the Zurich University of The Arts.

After initially training as a lawyer, University of Salford student Sarah Boulter is now completing an MA in Contemporary Art. Ahead of exhibiting work in this year’s Degree Show, she tells us more about her practice and inspirations.

What’s your main area of practice and what ideas do you express through your work? My main area of practice is print, more specifically screen printing and etching. My recent work has explored the idea of confession and its role in manipulating and constructing identity, both through people’s compulsive spilling on social media and through things like private diary writing. My interest in this theme stems from my time working as a lawyer, when I wrote wills and had to gain trust and intimate personal details from clients very quickly. One piece that reflects this is a confession booth I built for the students in the Allerton Building. I subsequently displayed a poster liberating all their secrets.

How do you develop ideas for your work? I try to read widely, watch movies, go to exhibitions, travel, talk to people and try things out. I also write a lot as that helps me build on ideas and generate new thoughts, and I take notes of things I see or overhear that amuse me.

What are you presenting at this year’s degree show? I’ll be presenting a series of etchings titled, ‘…and other lies I’ve told’. This is a continuation of my confessional theme and is more personal than previous work in that each piece features a piece of text - a quotation of mine - against an image suggesting that the statement is untrue. Hopefully, the work is humorous. I enjoy the contrast between etchings, which are often considered as serious and traditional medium, with playful, irreverent imagery and text.

How has studying at Salford helped you to develop your practice? Having come from a non-art background (first studying Chinese language and then working in law), Salford has enabled my practice to develop immeasurably. I have found the guidance from tutors and workshop technicians greatly encouraging and their academic and practical knowledge has been a huge resource for me.

What are your plans after graduating? After I graduate, I plan to exhibit more of my work. So far, I have shown work at the Territorial Anxiety MA show at The Grosvenor Gallery and in the Hidden Identities exhibition at The Old Fire Station in Salford. The Old Fire Station is also the venue for the current Haworth Life Drawing group exhibition, which includes some of my work. A piece of mine was featured in Paper Gallery’s stall at this year’s Hepworth Print Fair. And I’ll be part of a further exhibition was planned as a result of Create Salford’s recent drawing symposium at Artwork.

Bankley Studio20 Graduate Residency Bankley Studios would like to offer the opportunity of a one month residency to 3 Manchester based third year Fine Art students working within Bankley’s project space ‘Studio 20’. The residency will take place during August 2016 (after the students have graduated) and the exhibition will take place during September 2016.

During this residency Bankley will be hosting critical discussions and events with leading arts professionals around the theme of collaboration. The 3 successful graduates will be encouraged to take part and contribute to this event.

The residency includes:

• £150 stipend for each graduate • Shared studio space with 24 hour access and lockable storage • Group exhibition in the newly renovated Bankley Gallery following the residency (September) • A curator will mentor the Graduates through the process of hanging their show. • The Graduates will be encouraged and supported to add to the Bankley blog whilst in residence as well as hold their own artist talk and / or contribute to other events.

The successful applicants may choose to collaborate and/or work individually for the duration of the residency, however we anticipate they will work together to arrange their artist talks / event and hang a coherent exhibition with the support of the curator.

Superb new (old) game Rebound

Playful Learning, Manchester, 13-15 July 2016

Playful Learning is pitched at the intersection of learning and play for adults. Playful in approach and outlook, yet underpinned by robust research and working practices, we’ll be providing a space where teachers, researchers and students can play, learn and think together. A space to meet other playful people and be inspired by talks, workshops, activities and events. Based in the heart of Manchester, we’ll also be exploring some of the city’s playful spaces with evening activities to continue the fun and conversations after the formal programme ends.

Playful learning will run over three days, from lunchtime on Wed 13 July 2016 to lunchtime on Friday 15 July 2016.

Who’s it for?

Higher and Further Education teachers, researchers, trainers and students; library, museum and local government education officers; workplace trainers; educational designers; learning technologists; in fact anyone involved in adult learning who has an interest in engaging people through play.

What will be there?

We’re planning a whole host of playful guests, activities and events, which we’ll gradually reveal here. We already have our keynote speakers lined up (to be announced very soon), and are exploring lots of exciting options for the conference programme. We really want to make this more than the traditional conference format and are open to ideas and suggestions – weird and wonderful, please!

Paid exhibition opportunity -salford uni students

All Arts and Media students are invited to submit work or ideas for Cultural Campus an exhibition in the Old Fire Station in February 2016.

This brief focuses on Salford’s campus and the varied range of activities that take place in and around the University. We are encouraging students to explore the campus (including MCUK) and our immediate surroundings such as Peel Park and The Meadows, Salford Crescent Station, Manchester Ship Canal etc. and to highlight or respond to some of the more interesting, overlooked or plain curious aspects of the area.

We invite submissions in two categories:

- Finished original artwork (drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, textiles etc.)

- Illustrated proposals and /or documentation of site specific or temporary work (performance, video stills, sculpture, sound work etc.)

All submissions should be professionally presented and wall mounted. We cannot accept video/sculpture/sound works due to the nature of the space (it is also used as a meeting venue and conference space).

A committee comprising of staff from the University Art Collection and School of Arts and Media will select work for the final exhibition Cultural Campus.
