This was actually my first big illustration for my book. I wanted to do a cover using the working title (which I almost immediately changed.. it’s different now). Features Pantera, Victory, and Mercury

hiya! I love your artwork and was wondering if you had any advice for rendering armor? I've been using references but every time I draw the highlights it feels splotchy or wrong somehow, any advice or books you've studied to learn? Also I thought the way you used greenish highlights in your last artwork was amazing!!

well it's really just practice but i can advise you try drawing from life instead of photo refs. doesn't have to be armour. take a shiny metal something with a curved surface (cooking pot etc) and turn it towards you and away from you. you should observe that the specular highlight (the brightest highlight) never actually changes position. in fact it is always angled relative to the viewer and on the area of the metal that is physically closest to you (the apex of the curve). that means the highlight is not 'closest' to the light source of the drawing, but actually 'closest' to the viewer (imagine it receding from you in 3D space)

draw some pots and pans from life to see how the light interacts with them

composition is something i really struggle with and im obsessed with the way you frame everything with like extra elements (idk how to describe it, like the borders and text and extra bits) and im also obsessed with the way you use negative space in your compositions when you do that. do you have any advice for improving? I have The Ideas for full pieces but every time i attempt to thumbnail the composition is boring as hell.

i wrote a little bit about how i approach composition in this answered ask here and it's more or less the same but tbh these days i'm less into vertical composition like a lot of these. nowadays i just throw whatever on there haha

I love the shading of the left face on your new piece! Is the design based on any specific kind of mask?

Not particularly, I mostly searched for lion or leopard statues and door knockers for reference because actual historical lion-faced helmets have eye holes and the like. This helmet has no eye holes, just air holes

#and im going to draw it differently every single time because i think it's fun #and also i think settling on concrete visual “designs” for a prose-only setpiece is silly. everyone will imagine it different anyway #setting: mez

I compiled a bunch of art about one of my fantasy world building projects into a field-guide themed sketchbook, it's free it's almost 60 pages long it comes with some prose and most of what's in it has never been posted on this blog. and it's about monsters

hii, sorry if this is rude but i wanted to ask if you have a pinterest board for your horse references... i love your horse art very much & i would love to improve aswell.. if not thats okay too i hope you have a pleasant day ^_^

nope i've never been on pinterest. i'll be so honest i use google image search 99% of the time, usually if you throw in a more technical equestrian term you can get the thing you want (the horse breed, gait, equestrian sport, piece of tack it's wearing, etc)

my BIGGEST tip for improving horse drawing is actually to reference from videos (assume u don't have a horse in front of you that you can do life sketches of). look up equine sport or lunging videos and then pause the video randomly and speed-sketch it, then unpause, and pause again, and so on. this way you also get an idea of movement, follow-through, and how the joints move
