The Pink Lab - Part 2: Shampoo & Conditioner: Opposites Attract
Welcome back to The Pink Lab! Last time, we broke down the chemistry behind long-lasting lipstick, but today we’re unpacking two things you probably don’t associate with a laboratory at all. Two bottles that standardly sit side-by-side in your shower, but that you probably never really think about: your shampoo and your conditioner.
Even though they look like the perfect duo in your bathroom, they actually have two completely different, almost opposite functions. And let's be honest: that is exactly why your hair can sometimes feel like a bunch of dry straw after washing, but turns into a shiny, commercial-worthy mane after conditioning. There’s a super cool (and honestly, pretty magical) science behind it. Let's untangle it together!
Micelles: The Tiny Magnets That Eat Up Dirt
Shampoo works thanks to molecules called surfactants (in plain English: soap-like substances). Each of these molecules has a bit of a split personality with two totally different sides:
A hydrophilic head: intensely loves water and loves to dissolve in it.
A hydrophobic tail: hates water but is ab-so-lute-ly obsessed with fat and oil.
As soon as your shampoo comes into contact with water, something cool happens. Those molecules organise themselves super quickly. The fatty tails turn inward toward each other (staying nice and safe away from the water), and the water-loving heads point outward. The result? A tiny, round bubble that we call a micelle.
Think of a micelle as a mini garbage truck. The fatty inside attracts sebum, styling products, and old oil residues like a magnet, locking them away in the heart of the bubble. Meanwhile, the outside stays completely in love with water, which makes it super easy for the whole package to wash right down the drain as soon as you rinse. Opposites attract in their finest form: the grease on your scalp is literally washed away by something that craves it, while remaining loyal enough to the water to flow away with it. Elegant, right?
By the way, this is also exactly why "over-washing" is a real thing. Micelles aren't picky; they will also grab the natural oils that your hair and scalp actually need. That's why we love mild shampoos with gentler ingredients (like cocamidopropyl betaine or decyl glucoside). They catch the dirt but leave your natural protective layer at least somewhat intact.
Why Your Hair Has a Mind of Its Own After Washing
Now that we've gotten rid of the dirt, we come to the second piece of the puzzle. Why does your hair often feel so rough, static, or frizzy after washing?
Your hair is built from keratin, and the outermost layer—the cuticle—consists of tiny, overlapping scales. Think of them like roof tiles. With healthy, shiny hair, those scales lay perfectly flat. But here's the catch: hair naturally carries a negative electrical charge. During washing, that charge becomes even stronger because most shampoos are also negatively charged.
You probably remember the rule from physics class: two things with the same charge repel each other. Your hair fibres are literally going to push away from each other! This is the scientific explanation for that crazy static frizz after washing: every single hair strand is trying to stay as far away from its neighbour as possible. On top of that, all that repelling causes those tiny scales to lift. And lifted scales mean: more friction, massive tangles, and less light being smoothly reflected. Hello, dull straw situation!
Conditioner: The Positive Saving Grace
And that is the exact moment your conditioner steps into the bathroom to save the day. This is where the title of this article truly comes to life.
Conditioners are packed with cationic surfactants: molecules with a positive charge (think of those complicated names on the back of the bottle, like behentrimonium chloride or cetrimonium chloride). Those positively charged molecules are instantly attracted to your negatively charged hair. And we're not talking about a subtle attraction here! They shoot toward each other like an arrow from a bow, just like two magnets with opposite poles snapping together. Opposites attract, part two!
So what actually happens under the shower?
Those positive conditioner molecules attach to your negative hair and neutralise the whole situation.
Without that electrical tension, your hair strands can finally lie normally and cosy next to each other again (goodbye, static frizz!).
The scales are smoothed back down nicely.
Because those scales are lying flat again, they reflect light super evenly. And that is exactly what we see in the mirror as that enviable, healthy shine! There is no magical, chemical glossy layer being poured over your hair. What you are seeing is pure physics: a smooth surface that perfectly reflects light at you.
Why the Order is Sacred
This also immediately explains why the order really matters. First shampoo, then conditioner. Always. Shampoo leaves your hair more negatively charged and rougher—which is necessary to loosen up all the dirt. Your conditioner is the perfect counter-reaction that fixes the exact problem the shampoo just caused.
What if you did it the other way around? You'd be using the conditioner to seal a layer of grease and dirt onto your hair first, only for the shampoo to have to strip it all away (mostly) right after. A total waste of your time and your conditioner!
The Pink Lab Cheat Sheet
Don't feel like memorising all that chemistry? No stress, here is the ultimate summary:
Micelles = a fat-loving heart + a water-loving shell. They attract dirt and rinse away beautifully.
Hair = naturally negatively charged. Shampoo amplifies this, causing your hair scales to stick up like stubborn roof tiles (hello frizz!).
Conditioner = positively charged. Neutralises the tension and lays the scales flat again.
Shine = no fake coating, just light reflecting perfectly off a smooth surface.
Two bottles, two different charges, but together they form the ultimate, perfectly synced system. The next time you're standing in the shower, you'll know exactly which invisible, attractive force is making your hair look so fantastic. What is your ultimate holy grail duo in the shower? Let me know in the comments!
Until next time in The Pink Lab! Kisses!
Why We Could All Use a Little More 'Elle Woods'
We all know the stereotype of the 'misfit.' Chances are, you picture a quiet loner sitting in the corner of the classroom, dressed in dark clothes. What you probably don't picture is a blonde, hyper-social, pink-obsessed teen who lives for fashion and makeup. Yet, the new Prime Video series Elle (the prequel to Legally Blonde) proves that she can be the ultimate misfit.
Culture Shock in Seattle
In Elle, we follow a younger Elle Woods as she moves with her parents from sunny LA to rainy Seattle. Her junior year turns out completely different than she had hoped. While LA is all about glitz and glamour, the teenagers in Seattle are dead serious, down-to-earth, and politically conscious. Surrounded by raincoats and social debates, Elle sticks out like a sore thumb with her toxic optimism and designer outfits. She is immediately judged as a superficial, privileged girl who turns a blind eye to the 'real' problems in the world.
(Spoilers ahead, read at your own risk! <3)
More is More
When I watched the series, I instantly felt a connection. Just like Elle, I’ve been a massive fan of the more is more principle since I was a kid. The more color, the better. I used to mix the craziest fabrics and prints to create what was—in my eyes—the perfect outfit. And just like Elle, it made me stand out. I was a misfit, but a social one who loved chatting with everyone.
I was constantly told that I needed to live in 'reality.' I was expected to focus on the serious, grim things happening in the world: poverty, injustice, war. Of course, I know these horrors exist. But I also know I can't solve them all by myself. Awareness is important, but constantly dragging yourself down into a negative spiral doesn't make the world any better.
Who's the Crazy One Here?
If you look closely at the series, Elle is ironically the most 'normal' one. Sure, she is a bit naive, but she is social, she isn't afraid to show her true colors, and she genuinely tries to boost the school spirit. Her classmates, on the other hand? They are stuck in their own little cliques, wearing nothing but shades of gray, and talking about nothing but the world's misery. Is that supposed to be the standard for 'normal'?
Beyond the Backlash
Unfortunately, that heavy, overly serious attitude from her classmates is exactly what we see in the real world right now. Since its release, the series has faced quite a bit of backlash. Critics and viewers are complaining that the show is too 'bleak and superficial' and completely misses the mark for a teen drama. But honestly? I couldn't disagree more.
Of course, it’s not some heavy, deep psychological thriller, but it doesn't need to be. Elle is exactly what it's supposed to be: a delightful, lighthearted series that is perfect for winding down. Something doesn't have to be complicated to be good.
As far as I'm concerned, the conclusion is simple: the world is already heavy and serious enough. Let the critics talk, turn your brain off, and just give the show a chance. Throw on those bright colours, bring some positivity, and embrace your inner Elle Woods. Because of a little extra pink? We could all use it.
After all, as Elle Woods herself would say: "What, like it’s hard?" Embrace that positivity! What do you think? Could we use a little more colour, or are you Team Seattle? Let me know in the comments! Kisses!
Obsession (2025): The low-budget horror sensation you must see
Filmfacts: Obsession (2025)
Director: Curry Barker
Psychological thriller/horror
Budget: $750,000
Running time: 1h 48m
Starring: Michael Johnston, Inde Navarrette, Cooper Tomlinson
Production: Blumhouse Productions/ Focus Features
When an ‘innocent’ crush derails
In the psychological thriller Obsession, directed by Curry Barker, we witness a seemingly innocent romance that quickly turns into a lifelong nightmare. What begins as a simple, everyday crush escalates at a terrifying pace into a suffocating obsession. The film flawlessly manages to expose the thin line between affection and pure madness. The tension builds slowly, keeping you constantly on the edge of your seat as a viewer, wondering: how far will she go?
My opinion: why this low-budget gem is a masterpiece
From a simple crush to a creepy stalker: this film shows it all. It is not your everyday horror; it is better. In Obsession, acting, cinematography, and sound come together perfectly once again, and if you ask me, it is a fantastic combination.
For a film with a budget of only $750,000, this is truly far beyond expectations. Curry Barker, whom we previously knew primarily from his comedy sketches, has surpassed himself completely and has certainly claimed his calling as a director with this.
A golden tip from me: What is a horror film without a jump scare? Believe me, you really won't see this one coming.
From blood-curdlingly suspenseful scenes to the most uncomfortable moments, the film truly had it all. If I had to sum it up briefly, Obsession now ranks very high on my list of favourite horrors. I would definitely recommend it if you are in the mood for an evening of unadulterated, uncomfortable suspense.
That is why the film gets a well-deserved 4.5 out of 5 stars from me! ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Obsession proves once again that you don't need a multi-million dollar budget to create a top-notch horror film. Are you curious after reading this, or have you already seen the film? Let me know in the comments!
Why Sudokus are the ultimate ‘Hot Girl’ brain workout
Who says you can't solve a hardcore logic puzzle while wearing shiny pink lip gloss and playing a Britney Spears playlist in the background? Today we're diving into my secret addiction: Sudokus.
Let's be honest: when people think of a girly blog, they probably don't immediately expect a complicated grid full of numbers. But that is exactly why I love them so much. Why do we have to choose between beauty & brains? Exactly, we don't have to at all.
The ultimate offline me-time
Between all the TikTok scrolling, Pilates sessions, and binge-watching Law and Order: SVU, my head sometimes gets a bit full. Where some choose meditation, I choose logic. For me, Sudokus are the ultimate form of relaxation. It is pure mindfulness; for a moment, you can think of nothing else but those empty squares that still need a 7 or a 3. No notifications on your phone, just you, a pen, and a logic riddle. And let's be honest: doesn't it give you the ultimate Elle Woods energy to solve a massive Sudoku with a fluffy pink pen while blasting your favorite pop music through your earbuds?
Puzzling in style! (Specially for you)
Because the standard Sudoku booklets in the supermarket are, frankly, a bit boring and grey (totally not aesthetic), I’ve created something fun for you. A beautiful brainteaser! Print it out, grab your most sparkling pen, put on a good playlist in the background, and let your brain work!
I got a little creative and designed a girly Sudoku for you. And yes, you guessed it, this one is pink, of course 💕 Below is the link to the beautiful printable.

The Pink Lab #1: The chemistry behind the perfect, long-lasting lipstick
Hey girlies! Welcome to The Pink Lab series.
In this series, we dive into the science behind our favorite beauty products. Because who says you can't be a hardcore chemistry nerd while wearing pink lip gloss and with a girly playlist in the background? Today, we cover one of the biggest mysteries in the makeup bag: how on earth does lipstick stay put all day?
We all know the feeling: you put on the perfect lipstick, you go for lunch with friends, and after three bites, half of it is gone. Unless you use those long-lasting versions. What is the secret? Lab coats on, let's talk science!
The anatomy of a lipstick
Chemically speaking, a lipstick actually consists of a clever mix of three main ingredients: wax, oil, and pigment.
Wax (such as beeswax) gives the lipstick its firm shape so it doesn't melt in your bag.
Oil (such as castor oil) ensures the lipstick glides smoothly over your lips and adds shine.
Pigment, of course, provides the desired color. With a regular, creamy lipstick, the oil and wax sit softly on your lips. Super comfortable, but as soon as you take a sip of your drink, those oils 'stick' to the glass. Goodbye Lipstick!
The secret to long-lasting
So how do cosmetic brands ensure that a lipstick stays put for as long as 16 hours? That is where polymers come into play. Polymers are super long chains of molecules (think of a kind of microscopic fishing net). In a long-lasting or liquid lipstick, these polymers are dissolved in a volatile solvent (a liquid that evaporates quickly).
What happens when you apply it:
You apply the lipstick to your lips.
The solvent reacts to the heat of your skin and evaporates rapidly.
The polymers stay behind and are drawn to each other. They form a wafer-thin, flexible, and water-repellent plastic network over the color pigment.
The result? A kind of invisible shield that holds the pigment in place. It doesn't react to water, it doesn't react to saliva, and it even survives a heavy shopping spree.
Why does it dry out so much?
Because those polymers form such a tight network, they seal your lips off a bit, preventing moisture from escaping properly underneath. That is why your lips sometimes feel so dry after a few hours. For this reason, many long-lasting lipsticks have two sides: a colored base and a transparent topcoat. That topcoat is packed with silicones (such as dimethicone). Silicones have larger molecules that can slip right through the gaps in the polymer network to hydrate your lips and give them that iconic glossy finish!
What is your favorite long-lasting lipstick? Let me know in the comments! Next time in The Pink Lab: the chemistry behind shampoo and conditioner (spoiler: it’s all about magnetic charges). Kisses

Book review: Sometimes I lie by Alice Feeney
Information Title: Sometimes I Lie Author: Alice Feeney Number of pages: 279
My opinion I read Sometimes I Lie last week and the story really stuck with me. It was so exciting that I finished the book in just three days! Every time I had a little free time, I wanted to continue reading immediately. The story was full of unexpected plot twists that kept me guessing what would happen until the very last moment. I thought the plot twists were great because I didn't see them coming at all. In short, I definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves a good thriller. And honestly, even if thrillers aren't normally your favorite genre, this book is absolutely worth a try!
Rating: ★★★★☆ (4 out of 5 stars) Book summary Sometimes I Lie by Alice Feeney is a psychological thriller starring Amber Reynolds, a particularly unreliable narrator. The story begins with her chilling confession: "I am in a coma. My husband doesn't love me anymore. Sometimes I lie."
The story is cleverly divided across three timelines:
Now: Amber is in the hospital with locked-in syndrome following a car accident. She cannot move or speak, but she can hear everything. From her hospital bed, she overhears suspicious conversations between her husband, Paul, and her sister, Claire. Because of this, she fears that her life is in danger.
Then: The week before the accident. Amber's marriage is falling apart, her job at a radio station is on the line, and an obsessive ex-boyfriend suddenly reappears.
In the past: Diary excerpts from 1992, written by a young girl. These reveal a disturbing and violent friendship from her youth.
The plot twist and the ending (Spoilers!)
When the three timelines converge, all the pieces of the puzzle fall into place. The diaries from her youth turn out to be Amber's own. Her sister Claire turns out to be a dangerous sociopath who murdered Amber's adoptive parents years earlier. Since then, Claire has kept Amber under toxic control and ultimately also intentionally caused the car accident. Amber's husband Paul, on the other hand, turns out to be innocent and tried to protect her all along.
When Amber finally wakes from her coma, she takes revenge by locking Claire in a burning house. Afterward, Amber and Paul take custody of Claire's children so they can start a new life together. However, the book ends with a chilling cliffhanger: a familiar object is left behind in Amber's room. This suggests that Claire may have survived the fire or that Amber lied to the reader for the last time.
