I think the West is the only place calling them ISIS; the Middle East and elsewhere calls them Daesh. Here’s the thing: Daesh hate being called Daesh. Daesh wants to be called the Islamic State because Daesh thinks it gives them legitimacy and validity. Plus, Daesh is very insulting to them, so I think we should call Daesh Daesh as a fuck you to Daesh.

What does Daesh mean?

Technically, Daesh is an acronym for their full name in Arabic (al-Dawla al-Islamiya al-Iraq al-Sham), but it also sounds very similar to Arabic words meaning “one who crushes things underfoot” and “one who sows discord” (“daes” and “dahes”, respectively) so that’s why Arabs like to call them that.

Painting the Moon with German Artist @cecietcelacestca

The night sky has always had a mesmerizing effect on German artist Michal Friese (@cecietcelacestca), who frequently paints the moon with watercolors. “It has something so still and calm and at the same time bright and clear about it,” she says. Her interest in watercolors was piqued when she found a small container of ocean blue paint on her sister’s desk a few years ago. The 29-year-old says she “accepted the challenge of being limited by one color” and made all sorts of pictures with it. Though she still loves painting with one color (“It frees my mind,” she says) or focusing on the moon, it is important to Michal not to be defined by one thing. She plays with all colors, and weaves and dyes wood — and goes out looking for inspiration on her almost-daily bike rides through her hometown of Koblenz. This variety ties in perfectly with Michal’s username, the French phrase, Ceci et cela, c’est ca, which means, “This and that, that’s it.”
