I picked this painting by Rembrandt because her body suggests that she has had many children, and that it may have caused her social or physical pain even after birth, and I think that’s echoes in the pain Poulter discusses in “Why must I thus forever be confined”. I’m tagging it with fragile masculinity because apparently countless male critics cannot look at this sketch without feeling revolted at her ‘ugliness,’ which I would argue only exists because they cannot face the results of their lusts for women that naturally lead to childbirth.
