Though We Dreamed of More Than This || Rick & Carol

Rick had been intent on helping take care of the deer before he and Carl got some much-needed rest. He had been trying to work out in his head how they were going to field dress it and get it quartered and prepare the bit they planned to eat right away before they tried to figure out what to do with the bit they planned to preserve. He looked down as the girl tapped his hand then looked to where she had been pointing.
His mouth fell open as he saw his sweet baby daughter in her arms. Carl was out of his chair and had reached Carol before he could even get his legs under him. His legs shook as he tried to force them forward to where the three of them now stood. He took the baby in his arms from Carl, holding her close. He kissed the top of her head repeatedly as the three of them hugged.
“How?” he finally managed to ask as the tears fell down his cheeks. “How did you do this? Carol, thank you.” He knew that he’d never be able to repay her, and he was taken by surprise when Carl reached for her and pulled her close to the three of them to hug her too.
Carol let Judith go when her brother came for her, smiling at the look of relief that came over the boy’s face. She pulled back and watched as the family reunited. “You can thank Mika, the girls thought on their feet when things took a turn at the prison.”
There was obviously more to it than that, more that Rick didn’t need to know about just then. It should be enough that Judith was safe. But what would it mean for them now that Rick and Carl had come?
“Carol took good care of us after that, Rick, we were never in danger, Judith’s been safe all along.” She came to Carol’s side and took her hand, smiling up at her.

Rick held the cup of tea, sipping it slowly. He stared at the top of the table, falling into a daze. He had to force himself to focus on her words. Share a bed. He nodded. He’d long ago let go of the days that he would have been picky about where he’d lay his tired body down. The floor with four walls around him sounded good at the moment. He wasn’t going to complain one bit about sharing a bed.
“Carl and I can make up the bed.” He didn’t want to be any more trouble than they already were. He knew the disappointment showed on his face as she spoke the words that he had hoped wouldn’t be true. You can stay the night. The tea suddenly felt soured on his tongue as he pushed the cup away, unable to drink the rest.
He took a shaky breath as he leaned back in the chair and met her eyes. “I guess we’ll move on, try and find a place more permanent for the two of us.” He wanted to add that he’d stay close so that if they needed them, they were there, but he kept that part to himself. He didn’t want to make her pack up and move in the middle of the night for fear that he was taking away any more of her choices.
He had been about to say more when he heard something from the back of the house. It wasn’t a noise he could put his finger on, but it was enough of a noise to let him know that they weren’t alone. “Is there someone else here?” His hand had instantly gone to his gun, but he kept it holstered for fear of scaring Mika.
Mika shot Carol a look. She’d hoped they’d have more time before Judith stirred, but as is with little ones, she wasn’t holding to anyone’s desires but her own. Standing up, Carol placed a hand on Mika’s shoulder, encouraging her to stay in place.
“I’ll go check, you stay here with Mika.” Her tone was firm, she wasn’t going to let Rick dictate what came next, and she needed a moment to ready for it herself. She went through the living room and up the stairs to where she’d placed lJudith down for a nap. When she reached her, the little girl was wide eyed awake and smiling. “Couldn’t wait, huh, little one?”
Carol scooped her up in her arms and bounced her on her hip a little, smiling back at the little girl and getting in the few last precious moments before everything changed. “Ready to see your daddy and brother? They’ll be so happy to see you,” she said in a hushed tone as they nuzzled noses. Carol walked down the stairs with Judith in her arms, pausing just at the doorway to the kitchen. RIck and Carl were both turned toward Mika, talking about the deer she’d shot. Mika spotted Carol and stopped speaking, tapping Rick’s hand and pointing to where the pair stood.

Rick noted that she hadn’t promised them a sanctuary for the long run. Just for the time being so that they could rest. If that is what she wanted, then that is what he’d take. He ran his hands over his tired face and let out a soft breath that he felt he had been holding in for days. He followed her from the pantry and back to the dining room where they’d left Carl and Mika.
He gave Carl a reassuring nod as he pulled a chair from the table and deposited himself into it. He picked up the cup that he’d left sitting before their talk and put it to his lips. He took a sip, letting the liquid wet his parched throat.
“Thank you for letting us stay, Carol. We won’t be any trouble,” he promised her.
Carl echoed the same promise and eagerly began to eat the meager bit of food that she’d brought out for them. He hadn’t wanted to eat Rick’s share, but at his father’s insistence, he devoured it quickly as well.
Carol stood behind Mika, touching her shoulder as she watched Rick sit beside Carl. It was strange to have them here with them. Things had been quiet this last week, almost too much so.
“There’s a spare room I can make up for the two of you, you’ll have to share a bed if that’s okay.” It wasn’t like they could be choosy, they were quite lucky she was even going to let them stay. But she did have concerns about the next day and beyond.
“You can stay the night, but do you have a plan for what comes next?” She made herself a tea and sat down beside Mika across from them.

Rick snorted softly, but the bitter retort that desperately died in his throat. He didn’t have the physical strength to be angry anymore. He was tired. His body felt as if it was deflating. The only thing that kept him upright was the fact that he hadn’t felt safe enough anywhere along their escape from the prison to give in to sleep for longer than an hour or two.
Being here with her and Mika should have felt different, but it did not. He’d kicked her out of her home, their home, and told her that he wouldn’t have her there. And now he was there asking for sanctuary. He didn’t blame her one bit for not outright giving it to him the moment he’d asked for it.
He forced his eyes up to hers. The tears still clung to his cheeks. He gave a slight nod that he’d heard her. His eyes told her that he didn’t know if he could quite believe in hope anymore, but for her, he’d try. “I’m tryin’.”
Carol pat his upper arm, trying to be as soothing with her caution as she could. She felt in somewhat of a corner right now with her news of Judith. If she told him, he might express anger and she’d end up having to protect Mika and herself. The worst part about Rick now was that she’d lost the ability to read him, he was too unpredictable.
“We should get back to Carl and Mika...so they don’t worry.” She was careful to say their names, to ground him and bring him back. Grief could do terrible things to a person, and that is likely what had made him so unpredictable.
“We’ll get you some food, and a place to rest. The two of you have been out there too long without a break. It’s the least we can do.”

wexarethewalkingxdead:
Rick’s stomach lurched. He had to force his fist between his teeth as he forced back what wanted to spew from his stomach and out of his mouth. His knees quaked, threatening to give out on him. Her hand on his arm was the only thing that kept him grounded, kept him right there at that moment with her.
He blinked back the tears that sprang to his eyes. He felt several of the hot, sad, and angry tears as they fell down his cheek. He nodded. He hadn’t heard anything she’d spoken after asking about his daughter. He pushed the heels of his hands into his eyes as hard as he could. The physical pain momentarily took precedence over the emotional anguish.
“There was nothing left of her. Only blood,” he finally managed to whisper. They hadn’t spoken it out loud since seeing her bloodied carrier. It somehow made it more real, more painful even. “Judith is dead.”
Carol hesitated in giving him the comfort he needed. She knew the truth, but it was the only protection that she had. It wasn’t that she didn’t trust Rick, but she wanted to be sure he hadn’t snapped. He’d lost a lot in the last few weeks.
Instead of a hug, she rubbed his forearm, taking a hold of his hand, and holding it in both of hers. Maybe it was worse for him, not having a body or the confirmation. That was what had made things so heartbreaking with Sophia until they’d found her in the barn. Even though her world ended in that moment at least she’d had closure.
“There’s always hope, Rick. You can’t lose that.” She said quietly.
