It's unfortunate to me that most people on the Regina x Rodrick train are like, really gunning for either the sexual tension or the fluff. Cuz like, I understand the appeal, I get why people are doing it and I'm not judging, really, at all!
It's just that there's so much comedic potential between these two that could be explored BEFORE they even get together, you know? Rodrick is SUCH a failure and a loser, and Regina is so deadset on having everything she wants forever—having these two clash for any variety of reasons is already fun!
Rodrick just being in the same environment as Regina could be what turns her life into utmost chaos and directly harms her ability to control the school. Or Regina being dragged into whatever vortex of middle-class inconveniences the Heffley family seems to attract. The physical comedy of it all.
Imagine if the Heffleys are for some reason in the way of Regina getting what she wants. Imagine her manipulating the entire family to do her bidding. Imagine Greg trying to stop her and Rodrick trying to stop him from stopping her because hey, at least she's around all the time like this!
Or even something completely opposite to what I said in the beginning: imagine Regina being mad about Rodrick breaking up with her, and this time, unlike with Aaron, she wasn't even cheating on Rodrick. So now she's not going down without a fight, and she decides to charm her way into his family and his home just to torment him with her presence. She knows he can't resist her, so she's gonna break him—except Rodrick is actually really hurt by her, so he makes things actually difficult for once. Imagine the contrast of his previous "all girls are into me, and if they say they aren't, they're lying" mentality to the current "she said she liked me, and that was a lie"; how it could affect him and how he reacts to Regina.
The sexual tension is good, the fluff is good, but having them talk and affect each other's lives is so much more entertaining!!! What are we doing here!!!
