am i making you feel sick?
the feeling of driving through western Oklahoma and the Texas panhandle are impossible to really capture on static photos. it’s not just that you look in one direction and the horizon is impossibly far away. it’s that you look in *every* direction and the horizon is impossibly far away. it’s like looking at the ocean, the horizon is just haze that’s so far away you can’t understand how you can see that far.
and in the Texas panhandle the river valley canyons come out of nowhere. there’ll be miles and miles of corn and wheat fields and then all of a sudden there are none and there are oddly bumpy hills, like someone laid down a heated blanket in odd lumps, that go down into a very steep crevice, where the river has cracked through the sandy land and all that you can see are miles of hills for cattle to graze on and stubbly short trees here and there.
and then before you know it the land is as flat as you can imagine again and corn far as the eye can see, but somehow you know you’re going uphill but it’s flat. the sky is blue and sunny but then it’s a huge storm cloud that never rains.
everything is far away and everything is an illusion. no one lives there but then all of a sudden on open range land there are houses and freight trains. they vanish quickly after you stop at an amazingly tiny Mexican restaurant that you rave about. the car eats miles so quickly that you wonder if you’d imagined the existence of people. if you stand on a hill in the open range, you could see someone coming for miles and miles, you can always see the horizon but you can never reach it. it is a mist and all you can see is an ocean of longing.
