He hoped they would. Diners were one of the few things that reminded him of his old life, one of the few things that he could find an odd some sort of comfort in. Most people would think it strange that he would visit something that reminded him of his past. Steve was supposed to be adjusting to this world, finding his place in it. He really shouldn’t be looking back to the past. But he wasn’t certain just what he should do. He honestly felt like he had no place in the world. There was no war for him to fight, they didn’t need a beacon of hope, they didn’t need an old soldier. He truly was a man out of time and somehow they were expecting him to just fit right in without considering the problems that came with someone in his position. Or maybe because he was one of a kind that they had no idea just how to handle him other than to throw him out in the world and hope for the best. That’s what it felt like most days and today was just like all the others. Only difference was the fact that he had someone else to talk with.

“That makes two of us,” he told her, offering the same sad smile he offered other people. No one needed to know that he was broken on the inside, that he felt alone most of the time and that he could easily pretend so that no one would ever know. “Too many people expect things to be just handed to them or they want their food in a snap. They miss out on all these little places that have better food than some of restaurants that keep popping up.” At least that was his opinion. Stark had taken him to some of the fancy restaurants he preferred to eat at and it just reminded him of the old days when they had to scrape by with what little food they could find. The fancy stuff just wasn’t his thing, though he never told the other man that. He’d tried it and found that it wasn’t what he preferred. At least he could say that he tried it whenever anyone asked him about it. Now he would enjoy the sort of food that he considered comfort, food that tended to be made from the heart and something that would warm more than just his stomach.

“Ya evah try Southern food?” she asked, just as a waitress popped by and dropped off a couple of ice waters for them -- she’d be back in a moment to take their order, she’d said.

Her aunt Carrie had been quite the cook when Rogue had still lived with her. So had Irene, for that matter, but Aunt Carrie had mastered Southern cooking. It was kinda funny how food tied so strongly into a person's memories and emotions.

“It’s th’ best,” Rogue declared. “Suppose Ah might be a bit biased, though,” she added with a little grin.

For, you see, she’d noticed Steve’s sad smile -- didn’t matter that he was trying to act like everything was honky-dory, either -- and she was determined to try to be a little ray of sunshine and cheer him up.

“Course, it might also be ‘cause ‘a all th’ buttah...” Rogue mused, trailing off and smiling a bit like a goofus.

“Well…” Remy was unsure how much of the story he should really delve into. While he supposed she should likely know that he had sold himself to the company man if she had been watching the news, it wasn’t his proudest thing to admit.

“This and that, really. Whatever the call of duty leads this old dog to.”

“Call ‘a duty, huh?” Rogue asked, raising an eyebrow. She understood, though. That was sort of how she came to be with the Avengers, after all.

MARVELOUS MARVEL LADIES MONTH: SPIRAL

first appeared: Longshot #1 (1985)

who is she? Rita Wayword started out as an ordinary human woman, a professional stuntwoman, whose transformation into Spiral is a time paradox: first, she was attacked by her evil future self, which led to her meeting Longshot, who she fell in love with. Then, when Longshot returned to Mojoworld, Rita followed him, just in time to see him fall to Mojo and be taken captive by the evil overlord herself. Longshot’s memories of her were wiped and she became Mojo’s prisoner. Mojo kept her as she was for several years before using his scientists to transform her into Spiral, a loyal servant with multiple arms, at least one of which is fully mechanical in nature. The experiment also turned her hair from black to silver/white and drove her insane, as her mind was given the ability to see multiple dimensions at once, which she used for time and locational teleportation. To really drive the dagger in deep, Mojo trained her in various mystical and scientific arts so she could do the same to others that had been done to her by Mojo. 

Since becoming Mojo’s servant, Spiral has at several points been stranded on Earth (616), mostly due to her failure in completing whatever task Mojo had assigned her (the first being her inability to kill Longshot when she was originally sent back in time to create the very paradox that made her who she is). At one point she was manipulated by the spirit of Madelyne Pryor, who helped her return to the Mojoverse after being stranded on Earth, while in return she had to repair the body of Deathstrike, who had been severely wounded by X-23. Finding the Mojoverse - and Mojo - to be extremely disappointing (and perhaps having been manipulated by Pryor the whole time) Spiral joined the Sisterhood of Mutants to attack the X-Men.

Spiral has also had a hand in much of the horrible trauma that has befallen Betsy Braddock, aka Psylocke, during her life, including playing a part in the original transfer of Betsy’s mind into the body of the Japanese assassin Kwannon. So when Spiral was yet again rejected from the Mojoverse by Mojo, and was found by Betsy in a club in L.A., the ninja was more than happy to attempt to murder Spiral. What Betsy didn’t know was that Spiral had formed a close bond with the young mutant Ginny, who used her powers to save Spiral. As of current Marvel continuity, Spiral appears to be attempting to work with the current iteration of X-Force to save Ginny from a deranged Bishop.

what can she do? Spiral gained many skills from Mojo, mostly mystical in nature. Through intricate dance and hand motions - aided by her twelve hands - she can cast a variety of spells, the more complicated of which involve more complex dance moves and even the addition of swords and knives. Spiral can use her spell casting to teleport herself and others (sometimes while on the same planet, sometimes between dimensions, depending on Mojo’s allowance for the latter), paralyze, become invisible, make her opponent unconscious, or even remove superhuman powers, among other things. Spiral is immune to possession as well; once, for instance, when Rogue attempted to steal her powers, Spiral instead stole Rogue’s. She is also aware when others speak her name.

In addition to these mystical powers, Spiral is extremely skilled in hand-to-hand and sword combat. All of her arms are fully coordinated, which give her an advantage over her foes, though her overconfidence and tendency to “play with her food” can nullify this advantage. And on top of all that, she is capable of great feats of cybernetic and genetic manipulation, as she once “upgraded” several villains (including Deathstrike) to cyborgs through her Body Shop.
