ย ย ย as she spoke, jackson watched her curiously, his eyes only wandering away to glance at whatever it was she was talking about before returning to her. he really hadnโt understood the gravity of the situation originally, but standing in the gutted space with her, savannahโs annoyance was palatable. he couldnโt blame her. jackson had dealt with his own fair share of shitty clients: almost anybody on a job that costed more than $10,000 was bound to be a problem one way or another. but he had a whole company to back him up, and usually a middle man that meant he never had to directly interact with them. savannah was dealing with the pressure almost entirely own. her desperation on the phone suddenly made sense. โasshole,โ he grumbled under his breath, undoing the clasp of his watch so he could toss it aside.ย
once her rant had come to an end, he finally broke his gaze from the back of her head. letting out a deep breath, jackson surveyed the room, his hands resting against his hips.ย โi hate to be the bearer of bad news, baby, but your investorโs going to have to suck one. we can maybe get the cabinets refigured, but i donโt knowโฆโ trailing off, he reached his hand up to comb it back through his hair. โchanging the whole thing is a huge project. even with two of us i donโt think itโs even doable.โย
โyou think i donโt know that?โ savannah snapped, whirling on him with wild, angry eyes. her flames extinguished almost immediately when she actually looked at him and a sigh slipped from her lips.ย โsorry,โ she muttered, hating that she was even apologizing. this was their thing. they were mean to each other and sniped at one another but she knew her words carried more venom than before. it had lost the playful, almost flirtatiousย edge and were just straight mean. she didnโt want that. not when underneath it all she did consider him a friend. rubbing at her forehead, savannah shook her head.ย โsorry sweetheart, i know this is one helluva mountain,โ she laughed bitterly. looking up at him again, she gave him a wry, half-smile. most of her fight was gone.ย โnormally i would tell him to fuck off but i still have most of the rest of the house to fund and heโs threatened to pull that funding. maybe i could find another investor but i really donโt think so, not this late in the game. and his pockets are deep. never mind the sheer weight of his name.โ she snorted and moved over to the shell of the cabinets.ย โitโs a big ask, jacks,โ she murmured, fingering the raw wood for a moment.ย โif you want to go, i wouldnโt hold it against you.โ fuck, but she hated being any kind of vulnerable around anyone. especially him.
