hands buried in her coat - it was early. to tell the truth, Sawyer had heard of this hour of the day but never really seen it for herself - she would have been sound asleep, tangled up in sheets till the respectable hour of ten, but she hadn’t been able to sleep. not since the storm had passed, and it wasn’t something significant - she would drift a few hours before she’d wake up to stare at her ceiling a bit more, but glancing at the clock - her time had passed, there was no way she would be drifting again ---
so here she was braving the morning, one block away from deja-brew when she saw a familiar face, “how bad did the storm get for you?” she had the luxury of the indoors, but she wondered if Calvin had been spared from the extremities of his career.
“watch your step --” she called out as she heard the ring confirming she wasn’t alone anymore, “believe it or not - broken glass, not the storm -- it was a bird. not the brightest, but also still among the living”
where: frankie’s big buy grocery store
when: afternoon
who: open!
No one in their right mind should be out in this weather. Fog is meant for staying indoors, wearing a blanket like a cape, and getting lightly toasted while you watch daytime TV and eat your body weight in snacks. Problem is, 3D is pretty bad at remembering to go grocery shopping, so there are no snacks in the apartment, meaning he has no choice but to brave the elements in order to ensure the rest of his Bad Weather Day goes off without a hitch.
Weaving his way through the aisles of Frankie’s, idly grabbing things off the shelves and putting them back in completely the wrong place, 3D eventually arrives at the store’s selection of chips, only to find somebody else blocking the flavour he wants. “Aw, man, tell me I’m not gonna have to wrestle you for the last pack of hot cheetos,” he says with a facetious sigh of resignation. “Like, I’d hate to destroy you, but when it comes to chips, I can accept no substitute”
Sawyer knew when she had to hustle -- she had nearly spent most of her adolescence fending for herself, perhaps it was a habit that she had a tendency to blow out of proportion but as the clouds became heavier, ready to give them more than just a light drizzle and the fog grew thicker and thicker -- every instinct in her screamed - PROVISIONS!
again, she was dramatic to say the least and here she was - debating between the sour cream and onion or the hot cheetos - “i might look small but my bony elbows have left quite a few ribs sore for days --” she warned, a hint of a smile toying at her lips despite the threat that easily fell from them. “come on, go for the BBQ - they are just as good, leave the cheetos for the desperate like me”
it had all started with the cellar, of course when they had moved in, she had taken note of the small passage way down near the door, carefully placing a rug over it - it had slipped her mind that she had bothered to toss the unnecessary down there. one being a deck of cards she had cleared.
two bad readings and her favourite deck needed a break - so down she had gone into the darkness of the room knowing that the light switch was on the far left wall - what did she have to fear? cobwebs and creaky boards that had seen far worse -- all she needed to do was try to dash to the light without breaking a bone or two but the scream that fell from her lips was not at the sight of a face - no, it was the flicker of the light. the bulb had lit up - oh so vibrant for a second before she had been consumed with darkness once more -- just like the cavalry it wasn’t too long till she heard the footsteps above --
in all honesty, the little brat deserved it. there are things that sawyer and rikki were able to do after years of practice and manifestations, but they weren’t magic. she blames the movies for these false ideals in the heads of children nowadays. ❝ maybe we make a class on the differences between magicians and psychics. i mean, even then, would a magician be able to come up with any better name ? ❞ she grinned as she wrapped her arm around sawyers. ❝ anyone else of interest stop by ? i’m hoping more tourists visit for the holidays. ❞
“a class means one of us would have to teach it, i can barely tolerate them during readings, you think i’ll survive a lecture?” a chuckle slipping from her lips as she wrapped her arm around her in return, “of course not -- their idea of magic is sawing someone in half. they make creativity look quite desperate --”
“a sweet old man was quite generous - he came for some crystals, but gave me a new perspective on the importance of saving” the man had rambled his dear heart out, and it was a nice change of pace compared to the demanding brats they usually deal with. “we still have more time -- where did you go off too?”
He tried to contain the snort. He was on Sawyer’s side but it was still funny to him. Jude cleared his throat. “If it helps I have a degree in my job and people still think I’m sellingthem snake oil.” He replied with smirk. “I’ll take one of those readings if the kid isnt.”
relief was what she felt when the teen begrudgingly nodded and went off to possible rain on someone else’s parade, “maybe after you tell me about the degree that’s given you a bad rep? gives me one more thing to avoid if i ever consider going back --”. she was curious to say the least -- deciding to cut her losses after high school, she was more concerned about the balance in her account and how she would carry on than getting a higher education.

“i’m not a mindreader - i’m a psychic, there’s a difference” perhaps she had reached a new low arguing technicalities with the know it all fourteen year old in front of her, but could you blame her? the little shit was adamant that she should know what should be going on in her mess of a teenage head, that and perhaps she shouldn’t have guessed that her crushes name was chad. she went as basic as she could, rikki would be ashamed -- “if i give you a free tarot card reading later this week, will you run along?” she still had a business to run as much as she could say the child’s talk was cheap, this town was small enough to create a buzz. she hadn’t realized she had gained a spectator till she turned around to a chuckle --
[ savannah lee smith | cis woman | she/her | twenty-four ] —— welcome to grimrose, sawyer davis. it’s cool that you’re here, you know. haven’t you heard of the history of this place… anyway, how’s being a newcomer who has been in town for number of three months, especially since you spend most of your days as a travelling psychic/co-owner of cosmic balance? also, not that it’s a bad thing, of course, but i’ve heard people say you can be lacking tact more than you are impartial… but that’s just coming from people who are bored here, i promise. to me, you remind me of carry on my wayward son by kansas and . hope to see you around, sawyer/sully. —— [ ally, 28, she/her, EST ]

abilities
I would say she was drawn to the town more so because of its odd history - that combined with their business - it was just the right fit for some easy money, or that’s what she thinks. she’s managed to snuff the noise - the quiet urge that tended to creep in drawing her to grimrose to begin with but she wasn’t one to believe in destiny, this was convenient and exactly what she and rikki needed.
Her ability would be photokinesis - light manipulation. for sawyer, it’s of course not something she’s realized, for a sceptic and for what she does for a living - but anytime something flickers during a session, she can’t help but wonder if there was in fact something out there -- she just hasn’t realized it’s her.
musings
Sawyer Davis was what you would call the accident -- six year since Daniel Davis and Kathleen Davis had their eldest, the two had been content with just the one, but Sawyer even prior to birth tended to defy odds - the child that resulted in post-vasectomy, her parents were startled to say the least but it didn’t take too long to welcome the little intruder.
Sawyer had what you would call a relatively normal childhood -- if she wasn’t at home being a nuisance to her older brother, she had been in enrolled in every activity that you could imagine - she liked to excel, she also realized perception was what you made it -- the first time she realized how easy it was to manipulate your surroundings was at the carnival at the age of thirteen. she watched the psychic connect this sobbing woman with a lover that had passed and all Sawyer could think as she eavesdropped with no shame was the woman handed her trauma on a platter. with a squeeze of a hand and close ended questions - the woman had managed to give her some peace of some sort and in a twisted way, it was beautiful, wasn’t it? that was the night she bought her first tarot deck - and it was also the night she lost everything.
Daniel Davis was her dad -- her dad who was strong and like every child thought, invincible - nothing could harm him, what Sawyer didn’t realize he wasn’t invincible against a bunch of drunk teens and a red light. She lost her best friend that night and her mother lost her sanity -- Sawyer spent the rest of her years till her current humble age of twenty-four raising herself. Her mom was a shell of the person she once was -- she had seen the light go out in those eyes that once radiated adoration and she didn’t have the words to beg for her mother back, she wasn’t enough -- her brother hadn’t hesitated to leave the house that was drenched in tragedy and cheap booze at the age of eighteen and Sawyer soon followed in his steps.
if anyone asked her if she had family - Rikki Liu slipped from her lips. Rikki was her first friend and the only person who felt like home, from childhood friends who shared more coincidences than one could count to business partners who so passionately found their paycheck in what one could call silly. Sawyer trusted Rikki with her life, it was another reason why when both became drawn to Grimrose - she didn’t hesitate to hop in the car and step on it - all she left behind was a voicemail from Kathleen and a letter from a brother who never cared to stick around - so why should she?
