Pre words, there will be some missing gaps since I am pretty bad at telling stories, I forget stuff in general and just plain bad at retelling a story. Plus I might leave out some details since it doesn’t really matter.
Ok, so some time ago I matched with a woman on OkQupid. I don’t remember her profile now, since it was a month or so ago. But anyway, after a couple of messages in the app she asked if I instead wanted to chat on WhatsApp. Being a bit paranoid I decided not to say I have it (I have it, and use it here and there), so we continued to chat a little in the app. From what I remember now she was a bit pushy for me to get WhatsApp, a bit of a warning flag for me. I decided to pick up a prepaid sim, just to be careful. I knew I had my old phone at home still, I usually always save at least the previous phone for backup. I sent her my new number, we started to chat on WhatsApp instead. She removed her match (or the profile, I haven’t figured out how OkQupid does this yet since I haven’t seen her again while swiping, and she’s not in the “archived chats” folder) not long after. Another warning flag, though not as serious - but I understand why they do it now - to prevent you from figuring out it is a scam so you can report the profile and have it removed.
After a couple of days chatting back and forth, sending me random selfies here and there (which I of course reverse image searched, no hits...), she asks if I can help her with something. “Oh well, here it comes!” I think to myself. She wants me to help her friend... Basically she invites me to her friends metatrading company, for a demo account. Because it’s a “trading event” I have the opportunity to win something. After some back and forth about this I finally have a demo account. They give me $100,000 in virtual currency to use to trade bitcoin, or at least fractions of it. I didn’t put a whole lot of effort into this. If I remember correctly, about a week pass and I have earned a couple of thousand in fake money they tell me that I have won $500. BUT before I can get the money, I need to create a real account. For which they need personal details, and a picture of my photo ID. I do not agree to this, because I do not want to share my personal details. And of course there are no other ways for them to give me my price money. I have to trade 10 hands before I can transfer anything from my trading account to a bank account, they say. Sooooooooo... I provide them with some randomly made up details, and I take a picture of a broken ass ID card I find using google images. I use Photoshop to change name, date of birth, picture and signature and send it off to the contact at the trading company. It’s all approved and I am provided with my account...
While all of this is happening I am chatting with my match. She’s quite flirty and stuff. She says she wants to meet me but she’s taking care of a family member and is very busy... The only thing she has said to me, that she is busy with is studying the trading graph in the app (MetaTrader 4, used for Forex trading it seems). She also sends me random (very low resolution screenshots, probably stolen from google. It’s hard to reverse search these since they are basically plain text...) screenshots of her winnings. Showing positive gain the further in the “relationship” we go.
There is a lot of back and forth about love, and that I need to accept her kindness for her to stay happy with me. Her kindness is basically just tips about when to buy and when to sell in the app, to make profit. I play along with her flirty attitude and tell her I want to spoil her with lingerie and other fine things. Which only seem to fuel her more into making me trade, and add more money in to the account.
Well, one day I wake up and all my money in the account (the trading account, not my actual one) is gone, and I freak out. I write to her and the contact person and we all have a bit of a panic. I thought initially that they had emptied it, and was going to try to scam me into refilling it (more on this later). Well, it turns out it was my fault. I forgot to close a sale, or whatever, in the app. I am going to be honest, the app is not very user friendly and there is nothing to guide you in on how to use it. I have asked her to show me how to use it but all she says it when to buy or when to sell as per the trend. So not very useful help.
I have always been a bit skeptical if she’s even in Sweden as she claims. I have asked her where she’s staying and she just tells me it is at some relatives home. I asked where it is, and she gave me a random place in the city I live in. I think she translated it from Chinese (I believe that is where she is from at least, though her WhatsApp number is from Philippines, also a warning flag...) since it was very misspelled and I had to do some weird googling to figure out what she meant.
Anyway, I have been watching videos and streams about scams on YouTube and Twitch for a while now so I have found some tools that are useful. A guy on YouTube called Pleasant Green uses a tool to figure out the location of the person. It basically creates a redirect link that snags some details about the computer before directing it to the actual website you are trying to send the person to. In this case I was linking some lingerie that I was asking about if she would like. And I found out she was in Singapore, using an older laptop with AMD R5 graphics, 1366x768 pixel resolution and Windows 7, and an outdated version of Chrome. Connected via Alibaba as ISP, didn’t even know they also are an ISP...? Not a very fancy machine for someone that claims to have been profitable in trading!
So this is pretty much where I am at right now. I have no money left in my trading account and my match keeps telling me I have to refill my account to prove my love to her. I just today told her that money and love have no connection with each other, and that I do not care about how much money I have. There has to be another way to prove my love... Of course she agrees, probably to just prolong the cam even more. Oh yeah, and she told me she went home this weekend, since I hurt her because I didn’t want to “accept her kindness”, to prove my love for her... So I once again used said tool, and now she’s in China. Using the same computer, or at least one with same specs. Though this time there are more than one entry, that seems to be via a VPN (since it is listed as a web hosting company) via Japan as well. So I am wondering if the fake site is blocked on VPN, and she turned it off to access it?
Regardless if she’s trying to scam me or not, I am quite impressed with her persistence. It’s been like a month or more now, and she has not blocked me yet. The other ones, that have been obvious scammers, have been quite quick about it. Usually using pictures that show up in reverse image searches or just blatant celebrities.
