Mike Campau, The Deconstruction of America series, 2015

Typically resigned to remain silent on controversial issues, artist Mike Campau felt compelled by the increasing polarization of political issues within America and the world-at-large, to make a statement of his own. He chose to make his voice heard through a series of photographs of charred sculptures suspended in a state of collapse after being consumed by what one can only assume was a fire. The intentional destruction of the woodwork is a reflection of Campau’s pessimism about the direction in which the world seems to be headed. Each icon represents an issue that has ignited and destroyed the societal cohesion required to maintain a peaceful and productive world. Culprit’s include the corrupt and divided politicians, bigoted religious dividers and a disinterested citizenry that is engaged in the distractions of social media and other forms of consumption whether it be through poor diet or economic habits. Hoping to spark an educated and civilized discourse, Campau gives voice to the anxiety of the disenfranchised citizenry and seeks to engage them to participate to cleanse their democracy for the good of all.
