I’m not sure I quite accomplished what I was going for here but...ah. I’ll just stop overthinking it.
Your fingers drum ceaselessly on the shell of your luggage. Tap, tap, tap. An elderly woman across from you on the subway shoots a glare at the noise penetrating the early morning lull but you can’t force your fingers to stop their assault. She gives up after a minute and turns her gaze away. Relieved, you tug your phone out—nearly jumping out of your skin when it starts to vibrate in your hand.
Lifting it to your ear you eye the woman cautiously before speaking in a hush. “Hello?”
“_______! Where are you?” Mark’s voice floats through the receiver, tired but cheerful. Restarting the pounding in your heart you thought you’d long outgrew; you shift in your seat in an attempt to stifle the uncomfortable feeling.
“On the subway I can’t really…talk. Just meet me at the station.” You pull the cellphone away from your ear, finger poised to end the conversation, but he continues on—blissfully unaware of the people staring at you in silent annoyance.
“Excited for you first trip to Seoul? There’s so much here that you need to see and later tonight we’re going with Jackson to this little restaurant by the dorms, it’s really good I think you’ll love it.”
You nod to yourself, looking around at the people surrounding you on the commuter train. “Yeah, sounds good. I’m hanging up now though tell me about it when I get there. Bye.” With a quick swipe you end the conversation before he has the chance to start again, bobbing your head in a general apology to the crowd around you.
Exhaling your nerves, you focus your attention towards the map near the door of the train—rechecking your route and planning for your stop. ‘Three more stations’ you repeat to yourself, flipping your phone around between your hands.
The morning sun hits your face as you alight from the station, heart-pounding hard with the anticipation of both seeing your friend and the possibility of having missed your stop entirely. Scanning the crowd milling on the street, nerves plain on your face, you make your way to the nearest cafe—suitcase bouncing on the sidewalk as it trails behind you.
“_____?” You hear your name over the bustle of the cafe, choking on your tea as you look around frantically for the source. Mark stands near the entrance, smiling over at you, illuminated in a halo of the golden light leaking through the window behind him. The chair scrapes against the tiled floor as you bolt out of your seat at the sight of him, nerves washed away. You grab for your suitcase and abandon your half-finished drink to follow him out of the cafe. “Good to see you didn’t get lost.”
A laugh bubbles in your throat, overwhelmed with happiness at a sight so long dreamt of and so often pined after. Grinning, you slip your arms around his waist and relax into his frame—leaner than you remember but nonetheless familiar. Breathing deep, you allow your frantic thoughts to wash away and bask in the fleeting feeling; squashing the voice so insistent in letting you know just how fleeting it is.
Frigid morning air replaces the warmth of his body as he disentangles himself from your ams. “So…welcome to Seoul.” He grins down at you and reaches for your suitcase, leading you towards the cab he left waiting by the curb. Inhaling, you follow him after a moment, feeling the affection you've kept so carefully barred from your thoughts since the moment he left for Seoul creeping back into you—mingling with your fraught nerves. You slip into the cab beside him, careful not to let your hand fall too close to his on the seat, and swallow the lump forming in your throat.
“I missed you.” He says. Simple words, a fire in your heart. Burning your nerves and singeing your last coherent thought. Feelings harboured for years well up on your tongue, threatening to break the dam. You scream the words in your mind, watching as he leans forward to give the driver directions—back taut, hair tousled. Fingers dance on your lap as you fight the urge to reach out towards him, allowing the sentiment to flow through their tips and absorb into him.
“I missed you, too.” You choke the words out finally, forcing an amiable smile. ‘How am I going to survive this trip?’
