Lesson from NV
These last two podcast were most definitely my favorites. They were humorous, interesting, and truly thought provoking. The quote that stood out to me the most was said by Tamika, “Do not be defined by how you can die, but how you can live!” I took this lesson as live your life to the fullest and not worry about whats at the end. Tomorrow isn’t promised, so live for today.
Lessons from NV
I liked the formats of these live episodes because they felt very real. We got to get a feel for real dialogue and real events that unfold before us. This episode was really funny. It made fun of modern society in a neat way. Hiram’s heads were also funny to listen to.
I loved this from the podcast:Â

One of my favorite lessons from WTNV is the idea of originality and going against social norms. In “First Date”, Cecil and Carlos go on an over-exaggerated date filled with so many cliches. I think this was a way to point out to audiences that people don’t have to follow typical dating standards. If there were no standards would people act how they want? How did we get to this place anyway--where there are so many expectations? I think “First Date” conveyed a great message of how silly our social conventions are.

Sometimes you go through things that seem huge at the time, like a mysterious glowing cloud devouring your entire community. While they’re happening they feel like the only thing that matters, and you can hardly imagine that there’s a world out there that might have anything else going on.
And then the Glow Cloud moves on. And you move on. And the event is behind you. And you may find that, as time passes, you remember it less and less. Or absolutely not at all, in my case.
And you are left with nothing but a powerful wonder at the fleeting nature of even the most important things in life – and the faint but pretty smell of vanilla.

The Nausea excerpt was interesting but still hard to follow. I’m looking forward to exploring more about it in class. I think the nausea is the character’s overwhelming feeling of thought. The idea of existentialism is almost too much for him to handle, making him feel pain. The reading is rather dark. It’s interesting to see a different type of existential view. The narrator’s tone is negative, because he believes that objects do not wish to exist but are compelled to.Â

I like this song because it’s relaxing and good for studying. It’s also a nice twist on the original.Â
End of HHG
The ending was satisfying because I liked the excerpt from the Hitchhikers Guide. I don’t think the story is really over. There are just parts that the author left up to the readers’ imagination. I enjoyed the last chapter because Arthur read the part of Galactic Civilizations phases. I thought this was funny because it is kind of like an answer to the questions that the people of Magrathea had.Â
The Guide basically sums up that Civilizations must pass through the Survival, Inquiry, and Sophistication stages and then they’re done. I think it makes everything so simple. In the end, it’s basically just acceptance. Arthur accepts that Earth is gone and decides to learn about the galaxy through the Guide.
The characters, planets, and the galaxy just all move on.
Reading the book was a good experience because it was an unconventional read. I found it very different. It commented and made fun of society but in a creative way. The scientific theme allowed for it to be bizarre. The author really could make it into anything he wanted.
HHG Response
The book concludes quite abruptly, in a sort of cliffhanger, but leaving room for more stories. I also enjoyed the comical aspect of the last few chapters. It was interesting to see Adams use chance (like the policemen randomly dying) throughout the story to save the main characters.
How did the policemen die? Do you think it had anything to do with the ship committing “suicide”?
I know the policemen were supposed to have super protective suits so they could breathe but it was odd that even the backup supply wasn’t able to save them either. Could this be the improbability factor that is always mentioned in the story?
WTNV ep 30
I felt so scared for Dana in this episode. It sounds terrifying to be alone in the Dog Park. I thought the phone calls between her and Cecil were interesting because of her responses to Cecil. Every time Cecil responded to her words, she would ignore him and say odd things. She would not really listen and just hear what she wanted him to say. Cecil did tell her to walk through the door. Why did Dana respond in a way that made it seem like Cecil advised her not to?
Paper 4 Brainstorm
I am thinking of comparing/contrasting the weather sections in WTNV and the excerpts of the Hitchhikers Guide in HHG. I think in some ways they serve the same purpose but are also unique. They both provide a break from the actual work for the reader/listener. Some may find the breaks useless, but the creators of each work obviously found them necessary. I plan on exploring what those reasons are.

I like this quote from The Kite Runner because of how it sort of relates to our class themes. The language here is powerful and invokes thought. To me, it encourages people to be aware of human error and just move on from there. I accept this idea and choose to live life with the thought in mind.Â
HHG 26-30
There are a lot of existential references in this section. Why are the people of Magrathea so disappointed to find that Deep Thought found the answer to the Question and the Universe and Everything to be 42? Do the characters/humans in general always seek a great, meaningful answer to the Question? I think we all would like to believe in something grandeur than ourselves and our purpose. Could the real answer our purpose be something as simple as 42?
Big Questions
My question is for myself: What do I want to do with my life?
This is important to me because I am in my first year of college. What I do here is supposed to set me up for the rest of my time here and out of college. I have some career ideas in mind but I’m not so sure of them. Am I supposed to be sure? I plan on exploring life more and figuring out what I wouldn’t mind doing for the rest of my life.
WTNV ep. 27
This episode was a little untraditional since Cecil switched from reporting the news and sharing about his date with Carlos. I liked this one a lot. Something interesting that stood out to me was that the city council erected a monument for the Apache Tracker. The city’s perception of the Apache Tracker has changed because of the deed he accomplished. Is it possible that one can always mend one’s reputation through completing a “good” deed? What is considered a “good” deed? If the Apache Tracker had saved a less recognized, less prominent member of the community would he receive the same accolades after his death?

Toufexis Essau
Toufexis’ purpose in writing this essay was to explain the concept of love and loving a person. She uses many resources as the editor in chief of Time to explain her point as best as she can. Toufexis attempts to integrate more scientifical terms and ideas into the explanation. Her points and ideas are demonstrated in a casual manner, which may convince readers to believe her. The sources are relatable to everyday readers that are well versed in multimedia.Â
Marvin, the Paranoid Android is depressed because he has to deal with people that don’t challenge him. He never has opportunities to show off his vast knowledge and complexity. He is a lot like real people; they become complacent and unhappy in life.Â
HHG Ch. 17-21
My favorite chapter so far is Chapter 17, because it was so funny that Zaphod didn’t care if they died on Magrathea or not. I also thought that it was very interesting that there was a “recorded message” from the Magrathea people. I don’t think it was a recording at all, since it kept updating the closer the ship got to the planet.Â
My question is: why was Zaphod so interested in finding something on Magrathea? What was he looking for or was he looking for something at all?Â
I also thought it was interesting how there was a voice recording--even though obviously it wasn’t! I’m not sure what Zaphod wants from Magrathea but i’m assuming he wants riches/fame.
