The process of devising the record, of deciding what would go on it, and how we, as humanity, wanted to represent ourselves, was the most meaningful act. In that view, the Golden Record becomes an aspirational self-identification, a declaration to ourselves: We are a global people; we are hundreds of languages and a child’s laughter; we are music and whale song, heartbeats and the brainwaves of a woman falling in love.
