honestly, even if Jax didn’t freak out in that conversation with Ribbit, he still would’ve drawn the literal hell out of coming out as trans for years. at least lasting until Pomni shows up.
i really enjoyed the final episode, especially what it did with Jax, but I feel like the finale and the series as a whole could’ve benefited from more time to develop some events.
For instance, for how much time we delved into Jax’s whole deal I feel like Caine’s segment of reconciling with the cast felt a bit clunky and the montage could’ve displayed the spectrum of trust with characters like Pomni accept him into the group quicker while characters like Zooble need time to fully accept him in. In a perfect world, the cast dealing with the revelation their brain scans as well as Jax’s backstory would be one, hour long episode and Caine returning to the circus would be a 30-40 minute long episode (im just nitpicking here).
The one major issue i have with the finale was how they dealt with Gangle because for a final episode that spent the majority of its runtime on Jax, i found it very weird how little time we spent with Gangle’s reaction to his abstraction given she was the main target towards his abuse, especially since Jax’s backstory showed the nanosecond she stepped on that stage he made her his punching bag. I feel like this issue could’ve easily been rectified if there was some sort of scene where she vented all her bottled up feelings regarding all the physical and mental turmoil Jax put her through, whether it be to Zooble or the abstracted Jax.
I did REALLY enjoy the finale, however, and believe that it shows some of the highest highs the series has seen throughout its lifespan. I think all the stuff that happened within Jax’s mind was absolutely incredible and certainly the peak of the series for me. The fact the series’s soundtrack went full circle with bo en coming in to create a song within the finale when Digital Circus’s soundtrack was originally inspired by Snipperclips, whose soundtrack was composed by bo en, was very cute. I especially adored the remaining cast getting closure on their real world lives as well as the end credits showing the circus expand as Caine gives the cast free reigns as to what they can do within the circus.
despite its faults, i found it to be a very, very great emotionally poignant final episode to a series that helped me stay motivated during a time where i struggled to stay motivated. Despite the final episode boasting some of the series’s best moments, i believe Episode 6 is the overall best episode of the series due to how it covers everybody without it feeling like the main characters are getting too much time to themselves as well as the general structure of the episode being less clunky compared to the finale.
It’s basically the same problem i have with the Spider-Verse films. Though i feel Across has some of the best moments of the (soon to be) trilogy, Into is structured much more cohesively to where it feels more like a complete package.
The finale had a lot it had to cover and overall, i think it did incredibly well for how much it had to do in just an hour
