Kelley was startled, at first, that the stranger had accepted her spontaneous and rather idiotic challenge, but she couldn’t take it back now.
(Shit, ok, this is happening! Ok Kelley, you can win this! You can do it!)
She watched the kid’s hand decending as if in slow motion.
(This is it, its all down to this..!)
In mid throw, Kelley changed her hand from rock to paper-
"…!!"
"--Fuck!"
It wasn't often that Scottie cursed to such a degree, so perhaps the fact that a game of rock paper scissors had brought out that side of her was a little ridiculous, but -- she had lost! Paper covered rock, and there Scottie was, one fist hovering between them.
Scottie doesn't really think through what she does next. One second she's seething with disappointment, and the next the keychain is in her hand and she's taking off towards the door.
( She really, really wants this fucking keychain, apparently. )
At first Kelley was too stunned to speak, but she recovered quickly enough to whirl around and face her unexpected rival. After having the key-chain forcibly pulled from her grasp, it was rather surprising to see the mortified expression on their face. But Kelley wasn’t willing to give it up just like that, no sirree. She hadn’t endured the flood of holiday customers all vying for the same bargains just to leave empty handed. Without giving it too much thought, Kelley blurted out
"…Sudden death!"
"Rock paper scissors, winner gets to keep it fair and square!"
The girl's reaction is shocking and probably irrational, but it's also strangely addictive, and Scottie finds herself getting fired up too. After all, who was Scottie to refuse a challenge? Besides, she was a fucking pro at rock paper scissors! She always beat Roman, after all! Granted, that was because that guy always picked scissors no matter how many times he lost with it, but still, it gives Scottie far more confidence than she probably deserves in this scenario.
"Alright, you're on!" Slamming the keychain back down onto the counter, Scottie lifted a fist. "Rock, paper, scissors, go!"
This was it, the whole reason Kelley had even considered braving the flood of bodies that swamped the mall every weekend.
"So cute..!" she couldn’t help but exclaim when she saw the array of adorably pointless items spread out before her. Every month on the last Friday Kelley’s favorite store had a 45% off sale on all their accessories, and now that she had a job she could finally splurge to her heart’s content. Kelley was just about to snatch up the last of an especially cute key-chain, featuring a glow-in-the-dark shooting star, when her hand collided with someone else’s, apparently bent on the same mission.
It wasn't often that Scottie braved a store like this. It was the kind of place that only girls were usually seen wandering around in, full of cute trinkets and almost startlingly feminine outfits. Not really the sort of thing Scottie was usually attracted to, granted, but she had hoped to get a key-chain here as she was slowly accumulating enough keys between her car, her job, and her house that it was becoming nearly impossible to keep track of them all -- she was constantly misplacing them in various pockets and corners. And this one in particular looked nearly perfect. It was cute, but not so cute that the guys at school would be likely to make fun of Scottie if they happened to see it. Plus, it was glow in the dark, so it wouldn't get lost if she dropped it on her way home from work! It was perfect!
-- Perfect, so of course it would be just Scottie's luck that she would catch a conflict, her hand bumping into another girl's in her reach. On instinct, Scottie snatches the keychain immediately, yanking it away from the other girl -- but she's not some kind of monster. She stops and turns to the other with a horrified expression, keychain clutched in her hand.
"U-Uh... Were you--...?"

Holy mother of freckles. Okay, so she wasn't meaning to stare in such an obvious way, and she'll be embarrassed about it later, but-- Woah, dude. Scottie has freckles, sure, but this guy has freckles. Maybe it's just obvious because of how pale he is otherwise?
lms for a starter i guess
"I should just give up and become a hipster so I can wear glasses even though I don't need them."
"Hey."
cxnidae anything for you babe 💕
Despite having so much food in front of her, it was a rather quick meal as she swallowed without tasting. Laying her head on the table, Russell craned her neck to gaze lazily at Scottie. “Look, I’m going to level with you here, friend. I am completely and one hundred percent… out of money.” A quiet yawn parted her chapped lips. She was feeling ready to hibernate. “I guess… my point is… as much as I’d like to say no, I think I actually need to concede here.”
"Well, it's not a problem if you don't make it one, you know?" Scottie shrugged, offering a small smile. "It's not like a it's any effort on my part to help you out, and even if it was, what else are friends for, right?" Besides, as far as Scottie is concerned, she owes Russell for the way she'd reacted to her confession -- not everybody would have been pleasant about it, Scottie figures, much less as wonderful and accepting as Russell had turned out to be.

She narrowed her eyes, mouth opening to object. But the smell of food and promise of a full stomach shut her up right quick. “Whatever you say, Scottie..” She was already gulping down soup faster than her spoon could reach her mouth. God, she was so hungry. Running out of money was something she tried to avoid. But… sometimes there was just no choice.
Watching Russell snarf down her food so eagerly had Scottie feeling uneasy, and she couldn't help but worry. She knew that Russell didn't like feeling nagged, but... "You know you don't have to wait 'til you're starving to ask for food, right? We've always got leftovers. It's really alright, you know?"
She wasted no time and was seated before Scottie had time to disappear into the back. Her foot tapped as she waited.
"Thank you, I’m sorry for being such a slug. Really. Let me clean something or.. something."
"Hey... Don't worry so much, Russ." Sitting the tray of food in front of Russell, she hesitated for only a moment before she slid into the seat across from the other girl. "It's cool. What are friends for, right? Besides, it was just gonna go to waste otherwise." She paused, then gestured to the cup sitting alongside the previously offered food on the tray. "Oh, and the coffee's on the house. It's cheap shit anyway, and I'm allowed to drink it for free as an employee, so... It's fine."
She pouted, but only for a moment. “I said in exchange for food… but..” Glancing behind her and them at her feet, the girl nodded. “Yeah. Yeah okay let me at it..”
Scottie nodded, trying her best to keep how pleased she was subdued. "Alright. Just grab yourself a table and I'll go grab it for ya -- that's my job, after all."
"Eh-.." She saw through it faster than Russ thought. "I just was… you know. Passing by and I thought- ‘I should go see if my good pal Scottie needs any work to be done.. in ..exchange for some.. food..?’”
Scottie smiled, happy to see Russ drop the act quickly. "We've got some soup that I'm supposed to throw out, 'cause it technically expired today, but I think it's still plenty good if you want it. I think we've got some kinda stale muffins in the back, too."

"Hey! Scottie! My friend!" Clearly putting on the sweet talk already. "Can I do something for you? Can I clean your bathroom? Wash your hair?"
Scottie's not about to fall for it, but she does find it kind of endearing. "Hello to you, too, Russ. What do you need?"
