Art Under the Dome

Since November 2013, the SDSU Library has been an active partner in the campus arts initiative called "Arts Alive." Every week or two, we feature a campus artistic group (musicians, dancers, actors) for a short "Art Under the Dome" performance. Recently, some of these performances have taken place just outside the dome. The performances are usually held around noon on Fridays, but keep an eye on our Website or signs posted around the building for news of upcoming Art Under the Dome events.

Explore the Mysterious Side of the Universe

Delve into the world of magic, alchemy, Tarot, Spiritualism, and other areas of the occult when you visit Special Collections’ new exhibit, “Odd Scraps of Magical Wisdom: Secrets of the Occult in Special Collections.” The exhibit is located in Special Collections, which is in Room 4410 on the 4th floor of the Library Addition.

It Moves!

For more than 20 years, the Hanging Discus sculpture in Love Library has been, well, hanging…silently…motionlessly…collecting dust. However, if you worked or attended school here in the 1970s or 1980s, you might remember that the discs composing the sculpture actually rotated.

“Hanging Discus” was created by George Baker of Altadena, California. It was designed for Love Library and was installed in the central staircase in November 1973. The sculpture hangs 50 feet down the five-story stairwell, and some of its discs are 8 feet in diameter. A single motor mounted above spins the main shaft, while various discs mounted on ball bearings are free to spin independently.

Study in Style

Sure, I know, the semester has just begun, and you’ve barely had time to open your new textbooks, let alone think about assignments. So file this information away for the day you’re required to create a presentation: The SDSU Library has media group study rooms with Mediascapes in the 24/7 Study Area, the Media Center, and Current Periodicals and Microforms Center (CPMC). If you want to take one of these rooms out for a spin, you’ll need a room reservation, a USB flash drive, and a laptop. Easy peasy. Sure beats you and your study mates crowding around a tiny laptop in a cramped dorm room!

We Throw Great Parties…

...in the SDSU Library. This one celebrated the upcoming retirement of our interim associate dean, Anne Turhollow. Anne has been with the library for 31 years. This was a happy occasion, but a sad one as well, as she will be missed by so many.

Tall, Dark, and...

...well, NOT very handsome! This is Terl, the alien portrayed by John Travolta in the movie "Battlefield Earth." He's on loan from Edward Marsh, the gentleman who donated our extraordinary new science fiction collection.

Terl is going to be hanging out for a while in the display case on the second floor of Love Library, just beyond the SCC. Stop by and make his acquaintance, and while you're here, go downstairs and see the fantastic sci fi exhibit in the library's Donor Hall!
