April Kepner was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio. She grew up on a corn farm along with three sisters, a pet pony, and a pet duck. Her mother was a elementary school  teacher, while her father stayed home and tended to the farm. When April told her parents she wanted to become a doctor, they were “over the moon” about it. April has always been very focused on her studies, she is a devout Christian with a close relationship to God, April’s faith has remained unwavering despite being tested numerous times. 

April graduated top of her class from Ohio State University, going on to  CWRU School of Medicine, in Cleveland graduating top again, despite panicking under pressure Kepner always excelled academically, she secured a spot at Mercy West Hospital’s residency programme, where she became close friends with Reed Adamson and Jackson Avery. When Seattle Grace merged with Mercy West April struggled to gain acceptance among her new peers as her lack of filter and religious beliefs made her annoying at first, but she eventually developed friendships with Lexie Grey, Alex Karev and Arizona Robbins. 

April’s feelings for Jackson run deeper than friendship, and after losing her virginity to him the night before the boards they have developed a relationship, however April’s conflict with losing her virginity out of wedlock challenged her and Jackson’s budding romance.

Jackson Avery, grandson of Harper Avery, prestigious and world renowned surgeon was born and raised in Boston by his Mother Catherine Avery and father Frances Avery his parent divorced when he was a child and after a bitter custody battle went to live with his father half way across the country for a year, but missed his Mother and Frances conceited that Jackson was better off with his Mother in Boston. Jackson grew up hearing all about the joys of surgery, although his family never pushed him to pursue his grandfather legacy so he pushed himself academically, and only after he aced him MCAT’s did he reveal to his family that we too was pursuing a career in surgery. 

Jackson completed both his undergrad and Medical degree at Harvard Med, and despite his Mother’s offer to complete his internship and Residency at Massachusetts General, he was determined to do it on his own merit and not on his name sake. Jackson began his Residency at Mercy West Hospital in Seattle where he met Charles Percy, April Kepner and Reed Adamson who became his best friends who along with him made the cut when Seattle Grace merged with Mercy West. After loosing his best friend Charles Percy during the hospital shooting Jackson suffered from nightmares which he still suffers from. 

Jackson dated Lexie Grey, but it became quite apparent her feelings for Mark so he called it off. Jackson and April started dating after the boards when Jackson took her virginity, they have had an on-off relationship during which time he had a brief relationship with intern Stephanie Edwards.

Cristina Yang was raised in Beverly Hills, California by her Mother and step-father. When Cristina was 9 years old she and her father were involved in a car accident, she tried to stop the bleeding but it was too late and she watched her Father die feeling his heart stop in her tiny hands. This gave Cristina the drive to become a doctor to save lives. 

 Cristina graduated from Smith College, she then went on to earn a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from University of California, Berkeley, and her M.D. from Stanford University, graduating first of her class. 

Cristina started her internship and residency at Seattle Grace Hospital, where she met her best friend and ‘person’ Meredith Grey. In her intern year she began a relationship with Cardio god Preston Burke, the two almost wed until he left her at the altar. 

Eventually, she met Owen Hunt, who she loved like no other, but after it becoming very clear they wanted different things the two parted ways when Cristina accepted a Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, after her mentor at Mayo died Cristina came home to Seattle but everything had changed, and Owen had met someone new.

Derek was raised by his mother, after watching his Father tragically be shot and killed in front of him and his younger sister Amelia. Derek grew up the only man in the house with his sister Nancy Kathleen, Liz and Amelia. Derek’s best friend Mark Sloan was like the brother he never had, the two were inseparable throughout high school, ,college and Med school.  

Derek went to Bowdoin College in Maine in his undergraduate years. He then attended Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons along with Mark, where he met Addison Forbes Montgomery, the two fell in love fast and by the end of Med school the pair were wed, with Mark stood by his side as Best Man.

Derek was a self-proclaimed work-aholic, who was more married to his work than his wife – one night after working late Derek came home to find his wife in bed with his best friend, after trying and failing to forgive her he left his life in New York and moved across the country to Seattle where he met Meredith Grey – the true love of his life. 

Derek and Meredith have a adopted daughter Zola, and have been trying for a second child.

Alexandra Caroline Grey had a completely different upbringing to her older half-sister Meredith Grey. Lexie Grey up a happy child with two loving parents Thatcher and Susan Grey, and younger sister Molly. Lexie was a sweet, thoughtful and gifted child who won the hearts of both her class mates and teachers. Her incline to want to help people combined with her photographic memory made her decision to go into medicine an easy one.

Lexie graduated a year ahead of her peers and started her residency at the tender age of 24 years old, she began her internship eager to meet and get to know her older sister Meredith, but things never went so smoothly. And after months of thinking Meredith hated her they finally started to develop the sisterhood they should have had all along.

Romance wise Lexie seems a little unlucky inlove, with Alex Karev, Jackson Avery and Mark Sloan in her list of lost loves. But a sweetie like Little Grey surely has a soul mate out their somewhere.

Lexie is now in her final year of residency, and is well on her way to a bright and successful career in whatever field she chooses to specialise in, for now her interests are split between Neuro and Peds.

Meredith Grey, eldest daughter of surgical genius Ellis Grey, and Thatcher Grey. When Meredith was five years old her mother left their home in Seattle and left for Boston. Although a brilliant surgeon Ellis was  crappy mother who spent her life at the hospital leaving Meredith to raise herself. 

After graduating college she spent a year traveling around Europe with her best friend making her a year older than her peers. After her mother was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s she moved back to Seattle and started her residency at Seattle Grace, the same hospital as her Mother had done hers before her.  

Romance wise Meredith makes terrible choices when drunk and single, but after a rocky start her and Derek Shepherd seem to be well on the way to becoming the McDreamies, along with their adopted daughter Zola they seem like the perfect little family.

Sam Monroe grew up in San Francisco, her parents divorced when she was 5 years old, Sam lived with her Mom, seeing her Dad every other weekend and holidays. When Sam was 8 her Mom got a new boyfriend, Frank Barr who was nice at first,  but as time went out she started to see a side to him that hadn’t been there before. He lost his job and was angry all the time, spending all his time drinking and yelling at Sam’s Mom. The first time he ever hit her Sam was 10 years old. Things got worse and worse until finally at 14 she came home to find him stood over her Mom with a knife threatening her Sam flipped and saw red the next thing she knew she was stood over him knife in hand at the bottom of the stairs.

Sam wished her childhood had been different twenty two months in a juvenile detention center followed by 12 with community conditions would be tough on any kid. Despite this she never regretted her actions that day, she just never spoke of them. Her mom was safe and that was all the mattered. Once out of juvie, Sam focused on her studies and focused  on rewriting her story she was determined not to be remembered  for what had happened when she was younger but what she achieved in her adult life.

After She graduated she completing her internship and residency at New York Prespitarn, With several offers from prestigious hospitals Sam decided to move to the Cleveland Clinic to start her Cardio fellowship. Everything started off well and Sam felt like she was really making a difference, improving her skills every day she was determined to become one of the best in her field. In turn her personal life was improving slowly too. She dropped her barriers a little and made an attempt to become more social. Once she had found someone who at the point Sam deemed her best friend, she figured it would be okay to open to someone she trusted, telling her the messed up back story. By the end of the week the whole hospital knew it became impossible to work in a place were you were constantly looked upon as some psycho who woke up one day and killed their step dad.

The issues she faced at the hospital caused her to become closed off and cold. Continuing that attitude she packed up and moved to Seattle to continue her fellowship there. Vowing to keep everyone at arms length. People were toxic and she was here to save lives and that was. 

Seattle reuinted her with a familiar face Katryna Lukenskas, the two quickly became best friends bonding over their mutual hate of Kat’s older sister. Romance wasn’t something on the cards for Sam, at least that’s what she told herself.
