It was the first of the year, which meant that Karen should have been nursing a possible hangover and making a list of resolutions that would last two weeks and then violently crash and burn. Instead, sheâd woken up suddenly aware that she had a massive research paper due upon returning from break. The persona of a ditz may have been adopted as a second shell to hide from the things about herself that she couldnât quite understand, but she had no intentions of failing a class. She had to float through with Cs, selecting which assignments to skip and score poorly on, and which to put some (although it required very little) effort into. This was one such assignment.
Slipping into the library, Karen made a beeline for the section she needed, wanting to get in and out as quickly as possible. Karen Bell was not the kind of girl to ever·linger in a library, much less on a holiday. Before she could grab the books and be done with it, she felt someoneâs gaze on her and looked through the bookshelf to see that she had been caught. Hesitating for a moment, the redhead walked closer to the boy.·âDo you know anything about the Dewey Decibal System?â She threw the wrong word in there carefully, tilting her head at the boy with a well practiced confused expression on her face.
SJ shook his head ever so slightly, a look of regret on his features. âNo, not at all iâm afraid but i can google it for y-â the boy stopped in his tracks, looking towards the chunky computers that lined one wall of the library. âI mean, I will ask the clerk,â he said, a hopeful smile on his face.
With a quick nod towards the library assistant, he had asked the question before the girl could even hesitate. The reaction was nothing short of a humiliating laugh at his expense, but it didnât bother SJ in the slightest. As the librarian walked off SJ thanked him and looked towards her. âOkay so the librarian told me itâs actually a decimal system, but donât feel bad, i didnât know either,â he said truthfully, taking a seat at the book riddled desk. âI think itâs just the numbers that help people find the bookâs they are after.â
Shrugging, the boy pointed towards the books the girl held in her arms. âYouâre fine though, i see you have a history book in your hand and you walked straight to the right section so, you donât even need the system!â SJ said, looking down at his books and flicking through them, noting that he too looked to be studying history. âI think we might have the same topic, we could study together if youâd like?â
