TAGGING → Kurt Hummel & Sebastian Smythe
TIME FRAME → Christmas Eve, Dec 24th
LOCATION → Kurt’s Apartment.
GENERAL NOTES → Burt is over for Christmas and learns that Kurt and Sebastian are seeing each other again after ten years.
Kurt was running around his apartment trying to get everything perfect. His dad was about to knock on the door any minute now and while he was normally more excited to see his father after going months without seeing him due to the show…he knew that this visit might be a little different considering that Sebastian was sitting on the sofa while Kurt was in a panic. Even after all this time, Kurt was sure that Burt’s opinion of Sebastian had changed very little and he was probably the last person who he’d expect at dinner which is why he just avoided the question of whether he was seeing anyone when his dad asked him. As he was just turning the oven off, Kurt heard the expected knock. “Oh my god, he’s here.” Kurt said as he took his apron off and walked over to the door. He looked at Sebastian, “Please, try not to fight with him. Even if he tries to start something.” Kurt whispered to him then went over to open the door. “Dad!” He said with a smile on his face as he hugged his father, who struggled a little to hug him back with his present. “Hey there, bud. It’s nice to see you remember me. It wouldn’t kill you to call once in a while.” He said playfully as he walked into the apartment then saw Sebastian and stiffened. “What’s going on? Did I finally croak?”
Sebastian thought it was pretty cute the way Kurt was running around, fretting, but he was smart and valued his life so he didn't comment on it. Besides, he'd be lying if he said he wasn't nervous too. Things between him and Kurt had been going great since they started back up a few months ago, but he knew Burt had never really liked him being with his son, and that was fine with Sebastian. It only bothered him because it bothered Kurt, so he was ready to be on his best behavior to really win Burt over. "I'm not going to fight with him," Sebastian said, rolling his eyes. He got up off the sofa and walked towards the door while Burt and Kurt exchanged greetings and out on a smile when Burt noticed him. "Hi, Mr Hummel. It's nice to see you again," he said.
Burt was sure that he was dreaming. That this was some strange nightmare. He almost felt the need to pinch himself, instead he looked at his son for an explanation. “Dad, I see you remember Sebastian.” He said nervously, “ Um, I ran into him a few weeks ago. He doesn’t know too many people in New York so I thought he could spend it with us.” he glanced at Sebastian apologetically as Burt nodded once. He took his coat off and looked at the taller boy. “Don’t you have any family to spend the holiday with?”
The snub to their relationship took Sebastian back a bit, but he trusted Kurt to know what was the best thing to tell him. Sebastian offered to take Burt's coat for him and shook his head. "My family is visiting France, and I don't have enough vacation days to join them," he explained. Not that he really wanted to join them, but he left that part out.
Kurt felt awful for lying but he didn’t want his dad to fly home only seconds after being in the apartment. He mouthed to Sebastian that he was sorry when Burt wasn’t looking his way. His dad raised a brow to Sebastian at the offer and instead opted to hang his own coat on the hanger past Sebastian at the end of the hall. “And what do you do? Lawyer like you dad I’d guess if I remember correctly.” He said
Sebastian caught Kurt's eye and apology and shook his head. "Yeah, I work at a firm here in the city," he said. He didn't know if being like his father was a good or bad thing, but considering Burt brought it up it must be a bad thing to him. "Are you still running the shop in Lima?" He asked, trying to sound as polite as possible without crossing over into sarcasm.
Kurt nodded along to what Sebastian was saying, “It’s a really great firm. Sebastian is an incredible lawyer.” he added though Burt didn’t seem to interested in that information which caused Kurt’s forced grin to drop slightly. Burt felt there was some undermining to Sebastian’s question, “Yeah. And it’s doing very well for your information.” he answered sharply. Kurt sighed, “He didn’t mean it that way.”
Sebastian frowned. "I didn't. I'm glad to hear that it's doing well," he said. Sebastian didn't want to get into an argument so soon, so he turned to Kurt. "Do you need any help setting up dinner?"
“Well, I wasn’t a fan of the tone.” Burt said to which Kurt quickly broke in, “Yeah, if you could help me set up the table that would be great.” he said quickly, though he didn’t really need much help since he set it all up for the most part. “Dad, you can watch TV and I’ll let you know when everything is ready.” he told him
Sebastian turned and walked quickly into the kitchen before he really gave Burt something he wouldn't be a fan of. He waited until Kurt followed him in and he heard the tv on before sighing. "You'd think after ten years he would at least be able to tolerate me," he said.
“I know. But there really was never a change his opinion to change really…” He said then sighed as he brought out the plates and glasses. “I’m so sorry you have to put up with this. If you want to make an excuse and leave, I really wouldn’t blame you.” He said as he brought out the wine and poured himself a glass.
Sebastian watched the wine. "Do you want me to leave? I don't want to ruin your time with your dad," he said. He took the bottle from Kurt and poured himself a glass from which he took a sip immediately.
“No, I don’t want you to leave. This is our first christmas back together and I want to spend it with you.” he said and he swished his wine a little before taking a drink. “I just really want him to like you. I was really hoping he would at least give you a chance.” he admitted.
Sebastian set the glass down after taking a nice drink. "And I want to be here with you. And for your dad to like me. Or at least not think I'm some scummy teenage boy again," he said. "Should I like take him a beer and ask him how 'the game' is going?" He asked, wrinkling his nose.
Kurt peaked into the living room. "That might ease him up to you a little. Just make sure you don't say anything bad about the Browns." he said then took out a beer from the fridge to give to Sebastian.
Sebastian took a confident drink of wine and then grabbed the beer from him. "Wish me luck," he said before walking back into the living room. "Do you want a beer?" Sebastian asked, holding it out to him.
"Good luck." Kurt said then took another drink of his own glass before getting back to preparing the table. Burt was focused on the game when he heard Sebastian. He looked at the beer over before taking it, "Thanks." he said shortly. He opened the bottle and looked up at Sebastian. "Are you drinking?"
Sebastian took a seat at the other end of the couch away from Burt. "I brought a bottle of wine for dinner," he said. "Do you want a glass of that instead?" He asked.
Burt furrowed his brow when Sebastian took a seat and turned his focus back on the game. "Nah, I'm fine with my beer." he told him. "Besides i opened it. You shouldn't just be so wasteful."
"Right," he said, shaking off the insult. "How is Carole doing?" He asked, rubbing the back of his neck.
He paused, unwanting to talk but knew Kurt would prefer him to at least try. He inhanled deeply. "She's doing well. She's spending time with Finn and Brittany... And their kid." he answered, he wasnt really a fan on the two and wished Carole would have joined him instead. "Your folks?"
"That's nice," he said. "I've seen on their Facebook how big their kid is getting," he commented, though really he didn't give a shit about their kid. "They're good. Pretty much the same old same old," he said. He remembered Burt wasn't exactly fond of his parents, so details weren't necessary.
"That's nice." Burt said then sipped his beer and tried to watch the game. "You know you don't have to watch this with me. I know you don't like football as much as la cross. Too slow." he said remembering their first and last dinner together.
"Oh, no. I actually don't mind football as much anymore. I don't really follow it, but I don't mind watching it," he said, shrugging.
Burt nodded, he figured that he was probably lying but there was no point getting into it. He just let the quiet set and hoped Kurt would call them to dinner soon enough. As half time started, Burt leaned back and looked at Sebastian. "So are you really just friends with Kurt? Seems weird for him to just invite an ex over to our Christmas."
Sebastian wasn't sure if he should tell Burt the truth for in case of making this situation more uncomfortable, but also didn't think lying and having Burt find out about that later would help his case. "I think Kurt wanted to tell you later, but... We've been seeing each other since we ran into each other," he said, bracing a little in case Burt got angry.
Burt sighed and rubbed his face, "I thought so. He's not the best liar." he said then took a swig of his beer. "So when did you run into each other?"
He wasn't yelling, that was a good sign. "Well, we ran into each other towards the end of the summer and started romantically seeing each other awhile after that," he told him.
He nodded once, then contemplated before he looked at Sebastian. "So what makes you think things will work out this time?"
"We're both more mature now," he said. "I'm not a teenager anymore and I know what I want. And that's Kurt," he said.
“And I’m just supposed to believe you just like that?” He put his beer down on the coffee table, though he quickly remembered to put down a coaster before he turned his body towards Sebastian. “You really messed up when you were younger. And I could probably forgive you if you didn’t act so selfishly and stupid. Kurt really liked you, he trusted you and all you did was break that trust over and over again. I’m sorry, but I just can’t bring myself to see how you can make up for that even now.”
Sebastian nodded at him. "I know. I don't expect you to forgive me or trust me or anything," he said. "But I know you trust Kurt and raised him to make the right decisions for himself. I'm giving you my word that I won't hurt him again, you can take it or leave it. But it's really important to Kurt that you're happy, and it's very important to me that Kurt is happy, so I'm going to do everything I can to at least get your approval. For Kurt," he told him.
“I know what that would make Kurt happy. For some reason, he likes you. I get all that. But I also know that he tries to see the best in people no matter what and that’s not always a good thing. I just don’t want him getting bit in the ass again. But I’m not going to get in his way. He’s an adult, he’s going to make his own choices whether I approve or not.” he said, “So I’m not going to say anything. You’ll earn my approval when I see you actually make an effort to make up for everything you did before. And you’re not a kid anymore so nothing can stop me from hunting you down if you do mess up.”
"Okay, that's fair," Sebastian said. "I want to earn it and I'm willing to put in the time. But unless there's something you really want to sort out with me, for the sake of Kurt, and Christmas, can we just agree to get along for today?" he asked.
Burt hated to agree with anything Sebastian said but he held his tongue and nodded. “Fine. For Kurt.” He said, “But don’t expect me to call you son or anything like that.”
Sebastian stifled a laugh. "Don't worry about that," he said. "I'll go see if dinner is about done," he said, getting up and walking into the kitchen. "Hey, babe," he said, grabbing his glass of wine.
Kurt had been pretty much listening to the whole conversation. His apartment wasnt that big and he had to make sure to interrupt in case things got out of hand. "Hi." Kurt said putting his own glass down and kissing his boyfriend's cheek. "Thank you for doing that. I think you handled it perfectly."
Sebastian wrapped his free arm around his waist and smiled. "Good. Now we just have to not fuck anything up. So no getting on your knees and giving me a blowjob tonight. I know that'll be hard for you to resist," he teased, taking a drink.
Kurt rolled his eyes, “Oh darn, there goes my christmas gift to you.” he joked, though that was originally part of the plans he made before he knew his dad was coming to visit.
"You can give it to me later," he said. "Maybe on New Year's. The anniversary of the first blowjob I ever gave you," he said, smirking.
“Shouldn’t you be the one blowing me then? To keep the memory of that night alive.” Kurt said turning his body towards him, looking at Sebastian’s lips.
Sebastian set his glass down and wrapped his other arm around Kurt's waist. "We'll trade off and blow each other all night long like teenagers. How does that sound?"
Kurt wrapped his arms around Sebastian’s shoulder and smiled. “I think I can get on board with that plan.” He said then kissed his softly. “But I think we should get started with dinner before my dad starts to wonder whats taking so long.”
Sebastian returned the kiss and grinned. "Mmm, you're right. I can start taking the food out to the table if you want," he said, pulling away from him.
Kurt smiled, “That would be great. Can you take the turkey out? I’ll bring out the rest.”
Sebastian nodded and picked up the turkey. He carried it out to the table and then helped Kurt set the rest of the food out.
Burt could smell the food and got up, “Finally, I thought we wouldn’t be eating till the next year.” He teased. Kurt rolled his eyes as he took a seat at the table. “I cooked, be happy that I even did that.”
Sebastian sat at the table and filled his and Kurt's glasses with wine. "It looks great," he told Kurt, and mostly just listened to Kurt talk to his dad for the meal. The less he said, the less chance he had to fuck everything up.
