This release coincides with the total solar eclipse that can be seen throughout the continental United States. Entitled 'Summer Sickness', the new EP was recorded over a five day span at Counter Culture in Saginaw, MI. Unlike the previous two EPs which put the group in isolation, Counter Culture is located in a downtown/urban setting. This offered new challenges, as well as sonic templates, that the band had to work around.

Being at a venue/art space, the songs created in this session were shaped by what the group enjoys performing live: slow-but-heavy guitars, constant crescendo, and atmospheric groove. After the synth-heavy 'The Smell of Spring', this new EP is the most "rock" and guitar-based release the band has done in quite some time. That's not to say that layers of keyboards and experimentation are gone. The track "Summer Sickness" is a drum-based song with only percussion and vocals and "Orb" is reminiscent of bands like Múm or The Album Leaf. But for older fans of Secret Grief, "Brandywine" is the spiritual successor to fan favorites "Hayford" and "Faking Forgasms" while "Argumentum Ad Populum" is reminscent of 'Mutual Attraction//Opposite Direction'-era Secret Grief.

Nope. It’s All Ages!

Please take the following sentence with a grain of salt. Secret Grief will be going on a live show hiatus for an undisclosed (largely undecided) amount of time beginning Sunday, October 2nd. The formal nature of announcements like this means that most people will read this as we are breaking up and not bother to check in with the finer details. (Believe me, we’ve already been through this once when we changed our name back in 2013.) I’m here to tell you we are 100% not breaking up and we’re not even taking any time off from the band. The only thing that is going to change is that we will not be performing live for a bit.

The history of this band can be rather convoluted, but the fact of the matter is that this project has been going for 8.5 years in some way/shape/form and has featured nearly 25 musicians. At the present moment, the only two constant members are Kameron and myself. The two of us need at least the next year or so to deal with school as well as various things going on in our personal lives. Traveling around the states and playing shows in Michigan nearly every weekend while working and going to school can be extremely taxing and leave nearly no time for us to be creative and work on new music. That’s really what all of this is about. We want to work on new music. A lot of it.

We are at a point in our music careers where we want to branch out more and do things beyond the traditional guitar rock that we’ve been centered on up until this point. You’ve probably noticed a gradual shift in our music over the years, but we’re going to take this time off to shift much farther and much faster. At this point, we have 10 or so projects in various stages that we plan on working on. We would not be able to do all of this if we continued on the path that we are currently on. It is much more fulfilling to create at this point in our lives than it is to play the same songs over and over and over again. So that’s what we’re going to do. We are going to create and release a lot (hopefully) of music in the meantime. It’s going to range from symphonic to electronic to guitar rock and sometimes collaborate with artists of other mediums. We’re going to start new bands with our friends that sound nothing like Secret Grief. We’re going to be around. We just need to be home to do it.

We aren’t disappearing just yet, though. We are going to be playing 11 more shows before we go. Most of these will be in Michigan, but we are making a quick trip around the Midwest later this month to hit up a few of our favorite cities. Here’s where we’ll be:

We hope to see a lot of you at all of these shows, but we’re really excited for the show on 10/1. We are playing right down the road from our house in Lansing with many of our friends. We also made the show $5 both in advance and day of show. If you are interested in attending, I strongly advise that you buy a ticket ahead of time once they go on sale to ensure that you have a place at the show. Mac’s Bar isn’t small by any means, but it will only hold so many people. And at $5 we’re hoping a lot of people will want to come celebrate the closing of this chapter with us.

Today, we are also releasing an EP that is a collection of songs we’ve recorded over the past year that never got around to being released. We’re calling it Loose Ends, as these songs are pretty much our last ties to the past that we want to share with you before going through this change.
