âParley for the Oceansâ | Narrated by Captain Paul Watson.
âPerhaps no other social movement has developed as fast as the environmental cause. Blazing the trail is Parley for the Oceans, a network organisation raising awareness of critically endangered ocean life, including sharks, whales and dolphins.
One of the main causes being addressed by the initiative is plastic pollution in the oceansâone they consider to be âa design failureâ. âThere is more of plastic in our oceans than plankton and more plastic particles than fish eggs in our lakes and rivers,â says Cyrill Gutsch, who started Parley of the Oceans after meeting Captain Paul Watson, founder of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and co-founder of Greenpeace, who narrates todayâs film of a humpback whale and her calf swimming in the open sea. Like âbig shreddersâ, the ocean currents work to break down fossil oil-produced plastic into small pieces, which animals mistake and ingest as food. âThis has already caused the death of millions of birds and sea life, and also introduces plastic poison into our own food chain,â he continues.
Captain Watson insists that worms are more important than human beings for the existence of our planet, so are bees or fish, since they carry out essential functions in their ecosystemsâsomething humans donât. Gutsch, meanwhile, is bringing together cultural influencers like Daniel Arsham, Julian Schnabel and Pamela Anderson to highlight the power of the creative industries in reshaping the environmental realities we face today (scientists predict the majority of sea life to be extinct within 6-16 years). The meeting of minds encourages creatives to repurpose ocean waste in their many preoccupations. A start, if there ever was one, on a long journey.â

Directed by Hadassa Haack, this short film for Mercedes Benz shows us the importance of body language amongst wildlife for a freediver. Great to see such a huge corporation showing us the intelligence of these beautiful cetaceans. Starring and narrated by freediver and marine scientist, Lucas Handley.

We remember Ken Saro-Wiwa. Killed 19 years ago yesterday. In 1990, Saro-Wiwa launched a non-violent movement for social and ecological justice in his Ogoni homeland and the Niger Delta. The movement he led accused the Nigerian government and Shell and Chevron of waging an ecological war and genocidal series of attacks against the peoples of the Delta. The movement was so effective, that by 1993 Shell had to pull out of Ogoni. The response by Shell and the military government of Nigeria was to frame him for murder and execute him.The hanging of Ken Saro-Wiwa dramatically and tragically illustrated the true price of oil. Nine men â Baribor Bera, Saturday Dobee, Nordu Eawo, Daniel Gbokoo, Barinem Kiobel, John Kpuinen, Paul Levura, Felix Nuate and Ken Saro-Wiwa â were hanged on the morning of November 10, 1995, in the yard of Nigeriaâs Port Harcourt prison. 19 years ago today. Witnesses reported that Saro-Wiwaâs last words were, âLord take my soul, but the struggle continues.â Today, Nigeriaâs struggle with oil is sadly continuing⊠@ Price of Oil
