Making Fig Apple Jam
I've never had a fig before. There I said it. When I saw them at my local farmer's market I was intrigued. After all, they are known to be the fruits of the Gods so they must be delicious right? Oh yes, yes they are.
These delicate fruits spoil rather quickly, so they must be used up within a few days. What the heck am I going to do with all of these figs?? Make some fig apple jam of course! And then try my hand at homemade fig newtons. We'll see how the first one goes!
Here's how I made mine:
1/2 cup sugar (or 1/2 tsp of stevia)
1 cup of cranberries
1 Granny smith apple, peeled, cored and chopped
1lb of fresh figs
1/4c water
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp cloves
1/4 tsp allspice
Combine all ingredients in a stock pot. Cook on medium/low until fruits have broken down into something that resembles jam! (40 minutes to one hour)
This was just an impromptu recipe that I threw together. I hope it turns out well. If not, at least my kitchen smells like Thanksgiving!
