One of the most incorrect ideas people heard from Tolkien and then just kept repeating without stopping to actually think about it is the whole idea that "evil cannot create anything new, only copy and corrupt".
Give it 1 minute. You can probably think of examples that completely disprove this.
I wouldn't phrase this as anything Tolkien said as well - I don't think that specific quote is from him. Versions of that come from characters in his fantasy novels discussing the capacity of his evil, divine beings to create new life ex nihilo? They have this whole thing about being jealous of their creator's capacity to do so, and corrupting life in mockery of it. But even then, good divine beings can't create life either. God has to help them do it, and it is a bit like how a toddler "helps" their parents make dinner - we all know god did all the work here. And meanwhile, evil *people* in Middle Earth absolutely have kids and write books.
Tolkien is doing a metaphor? And religious commentary that goes back to St Augustus and debates with Manicheans about the inequality between good & evil. Tolkien didn't think bad people couldn't make art! He thought the fantasy fallen angels in his worldbuilding splatbook had to corrupt elves to make orcs (and even then only maybe). I don't think it is on him if others start applying that to actual human beings.
Fair re: His own worldbuilding details. I was thinking more of how people latched onto the concept and try to apply it to everything from generative AI to "woke" adaptations, always repeating that idea as if it was some profound and applicable truth.
For sure, I was aiming to clarify not rebut - I also have seen exactly the people you describe using quotes like this, and it is like come on guys. There were evil elves. Hell, the *most evil elf* is the *most famous artist* with the *most famous kids*! He didn't mean it the way y'all are using it. Think for a bit.
I don't hate it when a fictional woman who is strong and tomboyish has some "feminine" interests. Like I have said myself most full humans who aren't tryharding at gender conformity are going to have a mix of traits like that. I have such a mix myself since I'm apathetic to that stuff.
But in the context of a story that also randomly strikes you with gender essentialism every now and then it does sometimes end up sounding like "See even the most GNC woman is kind of a tradwife deep down and if you fixed her trauma you could transform her into one!"
People are always doing this to me even though I am cold and heartless and cynical and mean and brooding.

Since 2021, fewer Americans have said that gay or lesbian relations and changing one's gender are morally acceptable and have favored legal
Between 1996 and 2022, the percentage of U.S. adults in favor of legalizing same-sex marriage increased by 44 points, from 27% to 71%. In 2024, the figure dipped to 69%, and it has shown a marginal decline each year since. Gallup first asked about the morality of same-sex relations in 2001, when 40% said they were morally acceptable. By 2022, 71% held that view, before a sharp drop to 64% in 2023, holding at about that level during the past three years. When Gallup first asked about changing one's gender in 2021, 46% found it morally acceptable, and 51% found it morally wrong. Today, those numbers stand at 38% and 57%, respectively. Most of the recent changes in LGBTQ+ attitudes have occurred among Republicans. For example, in 2021 and 2022, 55% of Republicans said they favored legal same-sex marriage, but today, the figure is 37%. Among independents, support has dropped six points, to 67%, while Democrats’ views are the same as in 2022 (87% in favor).
There is a decline in support for queer people, but it's largely down to the MAGA crowd.

Or we could just accept that lying is the right thing to do sometimes actually, instead of making weird, backwards loopholes to convince ourselves we're telling the truth

thhis polll is nuts to me bc in 2020 during the portland wildfires and the pre vaccine era of the pandemic, i tried to sign up for a "mutual aid n95 giveaway" list, via my twitter account, and they banned me for having an anime girl pfp (it was rakka from haibane renmei) and having a locked account (i had a job and was closeted). i messaged them like "is there any way i can appeal this?" and they said "no" because apparently my anime girl icon and locked account meant i was either "fash or a creep or both." anyway they approved my roommates so they both got n95s but didn't share them with me. because i had an anime girl icon on twitter and didn't want my boss to find out i was trans.
anyway you all are going to get people killed (mostly trans women, bc we all know who suffers the most from pedojacketing). fuck off if you voted either of the top two options
Anti-city people are just plain fascinating to me
As a reminder if you're wondering why Gundam has so many weird names for people and things, this is why.
At that point I think I too would name a character Quattro Bajeena
I can't point to any big specific reason why this might be happening but I think I'm somehow becoming even more of a loner over time compared to 5 or especially 10 years ago, and I already was a loner pretty much from childhood.
I remain polite and all but it's like my interest in people I don't already like is disappearing, and I find myself thinking about social connections more in terms of utility rather than pleasure. For example, I heard having more social connections (especially offline I assume) protects against dementia but I register this as being something akin to taking unpleasant but necessary medicine or having regular cleanings done at the dentist. I'd be happier if I didn't have to do all that.
This doesn't mean there aren't people whose company I enjoy for its own sake, but it has always been rare.
I am open to advice on how to make this kind of thing more tolerable since the health benefits are real and political alliances could be useful too.
But something like "just interact with new people and try to make yourself more interested in them" is likely to backfire even though nothing obviously bad really happens in that case. Someone can come talk to me, I'll reply, and it's all good on the surface but inside I kinda just still don't have any positive feelings about the interaction or see a reason for it to happen. It can be sort of alienating too.

these psychoanalysis guys love to talk about the safety of the womb and the desire for the mother's breast. 1) I don't think the womb is safe, you're like hooked up to some stranger and can get knocked around, and more importantly I just don't get safe vibes from it and 2) is it really that good? I guess maybe you have to be there which only babies are
