Rowen

Pronouns: she/her

Build: Half-elf Oath of the Ancients Paladin of Selûne, folk hero background

Progress: Act 2 (Last Light Inn)

Romance: Shadowheart

Summary: Rowen is cheerful, enthusiastic, playful and more than a little bit sarcastic. She has a deep urge within her to protect other people, innocents or otherwise - whether it’s because she grew up with seven younger siblings, or just because of her strong sense of action she isn’t sure. After a bit of a wild youth she decided to take up her weapon and use it in the name of the Moonmaiden, much to her mother’s pride, and that doesn’t stop just because there’s a tadpole in her brain. The bratty little cleric of Shar in her party is proving to be a problem, though, but Rowen hopes she can get through to her.

Maki

Pronouns: she/they

Build: Tiefling Circle of the Moon Druid, sage background

Progress: Act 3 (Gortash’s Coronation)

Romance: Karlach

Summary: Maki is just trying to make it through the day. She’s had a very bad no good time of it and they just want to sleep, unfortunately she has been cursed with leading the mission to save the world. She’s reluctantly doing everything good and just; they can’t just sit back and let everything crumble but she really wishes someone else were doing it instead of her. Oh well. Spending time with Karlach is lifting their spirits though. Oh, and turning into a deep rothé for no reason. That’s very fun.

Youth Rylin

Pronouns: he/him

Build: Githyanki monk/bard multiclass, soldier background

Progress: Act 1 (Underdark)

Romance: none, he’s still a teenager (they’re all his big brothers and sisters though)

Summary: Rylin was raised in a crèche, like all githyanki, to become a soldier. He was never very strong which led to him becoming a target for bullying very quickly, but he had an advantage when he was attacked and his life threatened. He was fast, and incredibly dextrous, so he’d dodge as many attacks as he could until his pursuers became tired. The Varsh noticed this, and instead of the traditional path he was trained to be a monk and fight unarmed, using his dexterity and fluidity to his advantage. He infinitely prefers it to strength training but he can’t help but wish there was more for him out there. And while having a ghaik tadpole in his brain is repulsive, it does lead him to the top of a cliff, where a young tiefling woman teaches him the lute, and something in his heart sings for the first time.

Soldaer

Pronouns: he/him

Build: Swashbuckler rogue, charlatan background

Progress: Act 1 (Emerald Grove)

Romance: Wyll

Summary: Born to a drow father who escaped the Underdark and a high elf mother, Soldaer is, to put it simply, a bit of a spoiled brat. His mother’s family are relatively wealthy and he has been living off mummy’s generosity for some time now while he chases fun and thrills (which sometimes includes… borrowing expensive artwork, his favourite vice, to hang in his personal gallery). Being dumped in the wilderness with a brain tadpole has in fact made him realise that he has no survival skills and he’s now very much reliant on the generosity of complete strangers. Good thing he’s met this handsome Blade of Frontiers who has agreed to help him with barely a flutter of his eyelashes from Soldaer’s part.

Kinel

Pronouns: they/he

Build: Deep gnome Circle of Spores Druid

Progress: Act 2 (Moonrise Towers) (Honour Mode)

Romance: Barcus Wroot Shadowheart

Summary: Kinel has never stepped foot outside of the Underdark until today, and they immediately got captured by mindflayers and infected with a tadpole. So he’s not having a very good day. They’re just trying their best to survive and not be murdered by brigands, devils, goblins, or any of the weirdos in their party who he doesn’t 100% trust yet.

Isabrix Applebrook

Pronouns: they/them

Build: halfling Cleric of Mystra, acolyte background

Progress: Act 1 (Emerald Grove)

Romance: Gale

Summary: Some may call Isabrix naive, but after a childhood spent in the Temple of Mystra they consider themselves an expert in many things - prayer, library maintenance, and of course, magic. A friend to animals and enemy to the ocean, Isabrix (Isa to their besties!) may be kind of horrified by the brain worms but… c’mon, it’s at least a little fascinating, right? From a purely academic viewpoint.

Katja

Pronouns: they/them

Build: Changeling Harlequin, Dark Urge

Progress: Act 1 (Underdark)

Romance: Shadowheart

Summary: They have no idea what’s going on, and for someone who has deception baked into the very essence of their being they’re desperately, hopelessly genuine. All they want is to have someone to care for, for someone to care for them, but something in their soul craves the spilling of blood.

Pollux

Pronouns: he/him

Build: Half-drow rogue/monk multiclass, Dark Urge

Progress: Act 3 (High Hall)

Romance: Astarion

Summary: Pollux has something in his head, something that really shouldn’t be there. And the tadpole is there too. He’s attempting to resist the Dark Urge but… he might have accidentally taken a hand rather than given one to the person stuck in the portal. So it’s not going fantastic.

Eccan

Pronouns: she/her

Build: Dragonborn warlock, Dark Urge

Progress: Act 3 (Lower City)

Romance: Shadowheart

Summary: Eccan doesn’t know anything about herself, or about the world she woke up in. All she knows is the hunger for blood and the kindness of a few strangers. There’s a feeling deep in her gut that she knows for certain: she will have her blood, and she will protect the few who care for her.

Round 1 — Match 42 / 77 — Astarion Ancunin vs. Lakrissa

Astarion Ancunín is an Origin Character and recruitable Companion who can be romanced by characters of any gender. He is a high elven Rogue with the Charlatan background. Astarion can be first found west of the Nautiloid Wreck during Act One. A vampire spawn previously under the control of  Cazador Szarr until being abducted by the nautiloid, Astarion is set on exacting revenge upon Cazador and becoming free, no matter the consequences.

"astarion is the character i did not expect to get attached to and then it happened anyway, because he’s such a mess and he KNOWS it. He’ll flirt, he’ll lie, he’ll posture, he’ll act like nothing touches him, and then you get these moments where the mask slips and it’s like… oh. and the best part is you can actually influence what kind of freedom he chooses. you can enable the whole “power will fix me” plan, or you can push him toward something that looks more like healing (even if it’s ugly and slow and he fights it). Also: the fact he genuinely enjoys being mean is hilarious. he’s a hater. he’s a gossip. he’s the friend who would absolutely egg you on to make the worst decision at a party. and then when you hit the cazador stuff the game stops being cute about it. it’s grim. it’s personal. it’s about bodies and consent and ownership and what you do after you get out. and he’s still standing there trying to decide who he wants to be next. i don’t care how you play him, i just think he’s one of the most memorable companions they’ve ever written."

what’s something obscure you do in every bg3 playthrough regardless of romance/character/playstyle? i’m not talking “dropping the crèche on Astarion” I’m talking how I take Shadowheart to the schoolhouse in the Blighted Village and have her read the book there first to trigger that cutscene instead of the Selûne statue one because I find the implications of that scene far more interesting
