next up is caroline, aka glados more info under cutt + spoilers for portal 2

this is Caroline Sphere, who we know as GLaDOS!! her technical, real name is the Disk Operating Sphere, which is revealed halfway through the game.

Caroline’s original purpose as a personality core was to the give GLaIDS (wheatley in this au) the desire to design tests for the Enrichment Center. the only issue though was that the engineers found that little Caroline’s obsession was a bit much, to the point that GLaIDS was prioritizing testing over his main purpose. Caroline was taken out and was given several other jobs, until eventually landing in the Extended Relaxation Center.

at first, Caroline is more like a monotonous narrator and acts more polite towards Chell, similar to how GLaDOS is in Portal 1. as Caroline gets more comfortable with Chell, (probably around The Escape) she begins to show more of her passive-aggressiveness, dropping her sarcastic comments about Chell here and there. when they get to GLaIDS and put Caroline in charge though, she immediately switches up on Chell, and reveals her sardonic nature.

in this au, Caroline had always been planning to use Chell to put herself in the chassis, letting her control all of the testing in Aperture. but with GLaIDS purpose of being an intelligence dampener, an inadvertent effect of being in chassis causes whatever core that’s in it to have their intellect deteriorate until a specific point. as Caroline stays in the chassis for longer and longer, she starts to become more unstable, obsessive, and disoriented.

eventually, Caroline gets sent into space, and while it’s unclear if she does feel sorry for betraying Chell, Caroline is happy for her escape from the facility, and hopes that she’ll be safe wherever she ends up.
