Less than a year ago I was your average teenage girl. I wrote for The Blue And Gold, I was a cheerleader and I was even Cheryl’s Blossom’s best friend. I was happy.
Then one night everything changed. Reggie was hosting a party meaning the cheerleaders had to make an appearance. All night Reggie kept insisting I have a drink, however I managed to stay sober. The party itself was great, me and Cheryl even shared a kiss. That is one moment I’ll never forget.
Yet all good things must come to a close, the party eventually began to die down. Chuck offered me a ride home, I was wary at first and I was right to be. However he promised me was sober. He promised. So I accepted his ride, after all he didn’t even seem slightly drunk.
Climbing into that car with him may be the biggest regret of my life. The intersection by Pop’s is one of the busiest in Riverdale. Even the best drivers are careful. Chuck on the other hand was careless. Not realising how busy the road actually was.
I remember screaming at the impact, the windscreen shattering. Glass sprayed against my skin, causing cuts all over my body. My vision was blurred as glass seemed to never stop attacking me. After what seemed like hours of torture, I passed out.
Two days later I found myself waking up in hospital. Only it didn’t feel like I was waking up. I couldn’t see anything and it was the scariest thing in the world. My mom tried to calm me down but i kept panicking. That was my first panic attack.
Now to present day, I am legally blind. I also suffer from anxiety and depression. After that night Chuck blamed me for the crash, he told everybody I was distracting him. As you can imagine everybody turned against me. Even Cheryl.
“Y/N watch out there’s a table there.”
My hand flies out and I grip the edge of the table, managing to guide myself around it. Sighing, I lean against the table.
“I can’t do it, no matter how hard I try I can’t get used to having no sight.”
Kevin places his hand on my arm, a sympathetic gesture. Kevin was the only one who stuck by me through everything. He’s even trying to help me get better at walking by myself. After all it really is a challenge.
“You can do it! If I can make out with closeted straight guys in the woods then you can definitely do this.”
I crack a smile at his comment, he really does know how to lighten the mood. It’s a shame really that he hasn’t found a guy yet. It really is. Moose is great but he is too stressful for Kevin. He needs someone who is perfectly chill, that goes with the flow.
“Oh by the way, the Serpents are joining today.”
Unlike the rest of Riverdale High I’m not affected by the Serpents. That may be because I’ve never seen one and will never be able to see one. Besides most people judge others on their looks. Maybe now I won’t have time to judge people, I’m too busy judging myself.
“Maybe one of the Serpent members is gay. Get a bit of action there Kev.” I nudge him, causing him to let out a small chuckle.
“I’ve dated a Serpent before. That did not end well.”
Kevin grabs my arm and pulls me up, before quickly letting go of my arm. My hands automatically reach out, looking for something I may bump into.
“We have to get to first period, so you are going to walk on your own. With a little bit of guidance.” Kevin tells me, he almost sounds proud of himself.
“Don’t you dare do this to me Kevin! I’m not ready.”
He only laughs at my annoyed tone, I cautiously take a few steps forward before bumping into a bookshelf.
“The door is over here Y/N.”
I follow the sound of his voice, still wary as to where I’m going. It takes me what feels like forever yet I manage to reach the doorway. Kevin requests me to follow his voice as we enter the hallway but it’s so busy I barely hear him.
“Oh my God, these Serpents are so hot!”
“How am I supposed to reply to that. I can’t see anything!”
Trying to make my way over to him, I knock into several people who all make sounds of disgust. Finally I manage to reach Kevin who is blabbering on about some short muscular guy who he has caught eye contact with.
“Holy shit. There’s a cute girl looking your way.” Kevin excitedly squeals, gripping my arms tightly.
“Well could you please tell me what she looks like?”
I’ll admit, I’m intrigued. I’d love to know who this cute girl is but I know she would never want anything to do with me. Besides I’m a Northsider, I’m blind and she’s probably straight. Not a great combination really.
“She has long pink hair and tanned skin, she also has brown eyes. She’s quite short, you are a lot taller than her and she is totally checking you out.” Kevin gushes, clearly excited by this.
By the time Kevin and I have made it to first period he will not stop talking about the Serpents. He helps me find my seat before joining Jughead and Betty at their table. I don’t mind being alone. I’d rather be alone than listen to the hushed whispers of people talking about me.
I nod, not knowing who the voice belongs to as I don’t recognise it. It’s sweet and friendly reminding me of Cheryl.
“I’m Toni Topaz, I saw you earlier.”
The jigsaw in my mind clicks together, she’s the cute Serpent! My mind is racing at one hundred miles per hour as I wonder why she decided to sit here.
The clatter of a bag is all I can hear, I’m assuming she is rummaging through it. Looking for something. When she finds it she let out a relieved sigh.
“What do you think of this lipstick?” She asks, seeming to be happy that she has it.
“I actually can’t see it.” I admit, feeling quite embarrassed. “I’m blind.”
