What Makes Halon Different
A halon fire extinguisher works by interrupting the chemical reaction that keeps a fire burning, rather than just cooling it down or starving it of oxygen the way water or dry powder does. This makes it especially effective on Class B and Class C fires — flammable liquids and energized electrical equipment. Because the agent evaporates without leaving behind powder, liquid, or moisture, it's long been a go-to choice for protecting computer rooms, aircraft, telecommunications hubs, and museums housing irreplaceable artifacts.
There's an important caveat, though. Halon production was banned globally back in 1994 under the Montreal Protocol because the gas contributes to ozone layer depletion. Existing halon extinguishers can still be legally serviced, recharged, and used, which is why you'll still find them in older buildings and specialized facilities — but new production simply doesn't happen anymore. If you're outfitting a new building today, most fire codes will steer you toward a clean agent fire extinguisher instead, such as one using FM-200 or Novec 1230. These newer clean agent options mimic halon's non-conductive, residue-free performance without the environmental downside.
So the real question for most people isn't "should I buy halon," but "do I already have halon equipment that needs maintaining, or should I be looking at a modern clean agent alternative instead?" Either way, the underlying goal is the same: protect people and equipment from fires that other extinguishers can't handle safely.
Where Halon (and Its Alternatives) Actually Belong
Not every room needs this level of protection. Halon and clean agent units make the most sense in:
Data centers and server rooms
Aircraft cabins and cockpits
Telecommunications equipment rooms
Museums, archives, and libraries
Laboratories with sensitive instruments
For a typical home or small office kitchen, a standard fire extinguisher for home use — usually a multipurpose ABC dry chemical unit — is more practical and far less expensive.
How to Put Out an Electrical Fire the Right Way
Since electrical fires are one of the main reasons people look into halon or clean agent extinguishers in the first place, it's worth walking through how to put out an electrical fire safely:
Cut the power first, if you can do so without putting yourself at risk. Removing the electricity source alone sometimes stops the fire.
Never use water. Water conducts electricity and can send a shock straight back at you.
Use a Class C rated extinguisher — halon, clean agent, or CO2 units are all rated for this.
Keep your distance and only attempt to fight the fire if it's small and contained.
Evacuate and call emergency services if the fire grows beyond a size you can manage.

Every extinguisher, halon or otherwise, is only useful if you know how to operate it under pressure. That's where the PASS method comes in — it's the standard technique taught in fire extinguisher training courses everywhere.
So, what does PASS stand for?
P — Pull the pin to break the tamper seal.
A — Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire, not the flames themselves.
S — Squeeze the handle slowly and evenly.
S — Sweep side to side until the fire is fully out.
It sounds simple, but in the middle of an actual emergency, muscle memory matters. Practicing this sequence, even mentally, can shave off precious seconds.
Keeping Your Extinguisher Ready
Owning the right extinguisher is only half the job. A basic fire extinguisher inspection checklist should include checking the pressure gauge monthly, confirming the pin and tamper seal are intact, looking for corrosion or damage on the cylinder, and making sure it's mounted somewhere visible and unobstructed. Halon and clean agent units also need professional recharging after any discharge, since they can't simply be refilled with a standard kit.
