For fans of The Walking Dead: This is an awesome video by the artist Bass Orchestra. All of the music (minus vocals) was created on the bass guitar. Nuts.

An interview with one of my favorite musicians.

After completing their song "Bomb in the Backseat" on a local television show, Massachusetts rock group Doug Ratner and the Watchmen were ready to play the second half of their slot. The ones in charge were not so willing.

During the performance of the first song, the band had damaged a laptop to go along with the lyrics of the song. However, those working at the television show felt that the act might come off as "condoning violence."

"Bomb in the Backseat" recently rose to the number two position on Amazon's "Hottest New Release in Classic Rock" list and the band continues to rise in popularity due to good press.

Renowned bluegrass musician Earl Scruggs died in a Nashville hospital on Wednesday, March 28. The Associated Press reports that he passed away of natural causes, citing his son, Gary, as a source. Scruggs, known for his work with Lester Flatt in the Foggy Mountain Boys, employed a three-finger picking style that gave the banjo a new identity as a lead instrument.

I read an article on Felix Pastorius that really impressed me. He talked about not wanting to be compared to his father, but knows it’s inevitable. The thing that impressed me most was how humble he seemed, unlike his father. And that he was just trying to enjoy the ride and get better at the bass and music. Felix also said because of his name people are interested in what he is doing. But now he has to work hard to keep them interested.

I have always been a Jaco fan. I love when a musician hasn’t heard of him, because I am quick to fill them in. But now I will also fill them in on Felix.

Album Review: Montezuma Fire Machine's Frown Like a Lord

I'm always up for a good jam session and it's not often that I get to experience the sensation of jamming outside of a live show. This might explain my complete infatuation with the first EP release from Nashville instrumental-rockers Montezuma Fire Machine (MFM for short), Frown Like a Lord.

This is a band defined by its versatility and overall musicianship. Throughout thirty minutes of genre-defying music, MFM deftly maneuvers from the mysticism of the intro tune to the dance-infused "Mr. Meal" to the reggae feel of "On a Stone." The band simply gels throughout this seven track EP, due in no small part to the rhythm section of Alan Pfeifer (drums), Wil Harley (keys), and Chris Malone (bass). MFM hits its stride early in the second track "Calabash," a straight up rocker that showcases the talent of every musician in the group. The song is driven by the full force riffs and solos of guitarists Chris Herlevic and Colin Poulton, but acts a mere prelude of things to come on the rest of the EP. The work of fiddler Christ Acree and saxophonist Braxton Nicholas serves to carve out an innovative sound in songs like "Testing the Waters" and the aforementioned "On a Stone," adding a touch of tranquility and beauty to the raw power of distorted guitars and heavy rhythms. The EP culminates with "The Train," an impressive ending that tends to leave the listener stunned, still trying to understand the scope of the musical journey that has just ended.

The inclusion of so many sounds and genres has the tendency to make a band seemed unfocused and noncommittal to their own sound; not so with MFM. The band is able to leave its imprint with its constant hinting of the members' motley source influences while maintaining a sense of purpose and defining their own sound in the process. MFM is the master of its own exciting, musically diverse domain.

The bottom line: Frown Like a Lord is a must-listen for music lovers as MFM takes an insane sounding music formula and runs with it.
