Ah my sweet little Severus.
How resistless would you have been if anyone had actually tried to show you kindness?
Mom: *watching Harry Potter* So ... Snape's a spy?
Me: Yes.
Mom: How long has he been a spy for?
Me: About sixteen years. Though only actively for about four or five years at most, since no one knew what happened to Voldemort between the first and second war.
Mom: Shit .... so he had to face Voldemort every day.
Me: Pretty much.
Mom: Can't Voldemort read minds?
Me: Yep.
Mom: How did Snape never get caught?
Me: Master at lying, and occlumency.
Mom: What's occlumency?
Me: Blocking someone from reading your mind.
Mom: So if he slipped, would Voldemort have killed him.
Me: Probably worse. He'd probably torture him until he got bored and then killed him.
Mom: And he stayed at the school to protect the students?
Me: And played behind the scenes to defeat Voldemort, in the processes saving hundreds if not thousands of lives and had a major hand in Voldemort's down fall.
Mom: Fuck .... My ambitions sound petty in comparison to that. I'll never achieve anything close to that by the time I'm his age.
Me: You're older than him.
Mom: What?
Me: He's 38.
Mom: Fuck off. He's still a baby!!!
Me: Yep.
Mom: Aw and he died so young.
Fanfiction readers!
Just a casual note that if anyone has a favourite SSHG fic they are always welcome to inbox me the name of that since I am constantly looking for new ones to read. Mainly really long ones ^-^/ My current favourites are "Chasing the Sun" and "When a Lioness Fights", both can be found on fanfiction.net
Do you know if there is any fan art from the last scene in the fic The Tattered Man by Aurette? If not, there needs to be! Lol. I would do it myself if I could draw worth anything. Thank you.
Oh my, I am sorry if this reply comes late but I am pretty much useless at using the tumblr app haha. Anyways; I do not think I have read that specific fic so sadly I doubt I can help (yet). But I will take that as a recommendation and go read the fic and perhaps find some fanart along the way š
Happy Birthday Alan Rickman, wherever you are
The place where we met for the first time.
The Princeās Tale always makes me sadā¦My life is not as miserable as SnapeāsĀ and I think Iām much nicer than him as a person of course Ā , but I can see parts of myself in him. Iām socially awkward and only had a few friends in school, so I can imagine how he must have felt when he lost his only friendā¦
Christmas present for one of my Slytherin friends š this is definitely one of my favourite Severus Snape quotes!
Request thingy: Dumbles doing Snape's hair up fancy for him for some kind of event (Yule Ball maybe?) while Snape very grudgingly and grumbly sits still for it (and plots increasingly violent ways to get back at him in his head)
Snapey things I want for Christmas
1) Adorable beanie baby style floppy Snape doll.
2) An IRL Pepperup Potion (I promise I wonāt overuse it).
3) A small moving image picture of Snape and his almost-smile (you know what Iām talking about).
4) A set of his robes to wear (and the herbal scent it entails).
5) A super, amazingly soft Slytherin scarf.
6) Snape not to be dead in canon.
7) Alan Rickman not to be dead in real life.
yeah, james still bullied snape behind lily's back but have you forgot about what lupin said about snape not losing an opportunity to hex james? duh
i meanā¦. lupin isnāt an objective source? did you forget the context that he says that in? harry is demanding - rightfully - to know what the hell they thought they were doing and lupin is on the defensive.Ā
i donāt like it when people use that line toĀ ājustifyā jamesā treatment because itās victim-blaming. plain and simple.Ā āhe deserved what he got because he was sniffing aroundāĀ āhe deserved to be humiliated because he actually fought back against the four peopleĀ bullying him.ā thatās what you (and what lupin) are saying.
i really donāt know how to make it plainer for anyone who thinks the marauders and snape are on equal terms. let me break it down.
the marauders: popular, good-looking gryffindors. thereās four of them (or, if you want to be anal about it, two active participants and two passive participants, depending on pettigrewās usual level of participation). one of them is a prefect from fifth year onward. JAMES is a prefect in 6th year and head boy in his 7th. they have authority and the ability to abuse that authority for their own ends (as we see with lupin looking the other way when snape is bullied in SWM). dumbledore is on their side, as we see with the werewolf incident. they have more people and more allies and they are better-liked with a better reputation.
snape: a half-blood in a pretty racist house at the time, no real friends except for lily that we see. ugly, a slytherin, poor. from SWM we can see that nobody will lift a finger to help him except for lily. he loses his only friend in fifth year, so there goes any support system he has. heās nearly killed and the headmaster does jack-shit to the people who nearly kill him, showing him, again, how much power they have and how much he doesnāt.
i really shouldnāt even have to do this. it should be enough that there are four maraudersĀ and one snape. thatās not equal. itās especially not when two of the bullies hold positions of power and the support of the headmaster and the school.Ā
so no, itās notĀ āthe sameā when snape manages to get a few hexes in. thatās not rivalryāthatās a bullied kid managing to get a few punches in. thatās self-defense. lupin and sirius painting it as anything otherwise reveals their bias and harryās hesitance to accept this explanation in canon should point out how much thatās true - after all, he knows all about self-defensive fighting.Ā
the marauders: 4 people violently harassing, bullying, and committing the sexual assault of one single person they feel deserve it (or at least condoning it/letting it occur without protest)
this person: BUT SNAPE FOUGHT BACK???? HEāS JUST AS BAD!!!!!
I sometimes wonder about that oneĀ āprankā Sirius pulled on Snape.
You know, the one that almost got Snape killed and presumably endangered Siriusā friendship with Remus and almost got James killed and got Lily to see a tiny bit of goodness in James (for presumably the first time), because he saved Snapeās life.
I wonder how Sirius had planned that. I mean, Remus just says that Sirius told Snape about how the Whomping Willow works (PoA ch.18), but⦠why would Snape believe him? They hated each other. How did they get talking about such a specific thing? And why?
Did Sirus plan to actually get Snape killed and played it down as a joke after it didnāt work? And if it had worked, what then? Take the remains (After Remus would have been done EATING Snape, because Werewolves eat their kill.) and throw them into the Forbidden Forest? Since there actually are werwolfs in the forrest, not to mention Acrumantula and what not? And Remus? A memoryspell to erase the memory of eating a fellow studend? Or a long and fretful story about how he didnāt plan for his joke to backfire so terribly *sobsob*?
Did Sirius try to get rid of a DeathEater in the making? Someone, who could turn out to be a direct threat to his friends?
Thatās a very Slytherin thing to do, isnāt it? For someone so proud to be Gryffindor, I mean.
Thoughts?
Sirius is a fascinating character, and, frankly, an absolute mess. Heās not a bad person, but he is a person with a somewhat skewed sense of right and wrong and one with a history of deep trauma, starting with growing up at Grimmauld Place in the Black family, and compounded by his lengthy stay in Azkaban.
One aspect of Sirius that is well established in the books is that heās very impulsive. Heās intelligent but clearly not one to always think things through in great depth or detail, as we see in his dealings with Harry - he wants to be involved, he has to be where the action is, no matter how dangerous it is. He sees a problem, he has. to. act. Itās bravery, but not necessarily bravery in just cause. Sometimes itās recklessness for its own sake. He enjoys facing danger. He chastises Harry at least once for not choosing to face danger, because thatās what his father would have done, because thatās why he & James would have enjoyed it as teenagers.
Returning to the UK during the Goblet of Fire is aĀ prime example. He hasnāt been asked to, he canāt really do anything to affect a situation that Albus Dumbledore is already trying to handle, he has only rumors and second-hand stories. If he is seen, it will be his death or far worse. Itās an incredible risk.
Harry blames himself when he gets the first letter back from Sirius, assuming itās him saying his scar pained him that convinces Sirius to return, but Harry is apt to take on guilt and responsibility for all sorts of things that arenāt really his. Sirius was clearly already itching to return and his letter makes this obvious - heās āsuspiciousā of many things. Not without cause, but also not anything he is in a position to fix. But itās more important for him to be where the action is, than to be safe.
Then in The Order of the Phoenix, heās cooped up in Grimmauld Place at the behest of Dumbledore and the Order, which brings back all sorts of terrible memories and emotions for him, and makes him even more irrational and emotionally volatile.
Sirius wasnāt happy growing up in the Black family household, did not get along with his family and itās implied that they werenāt always kind to him and baldly favored his brother Regulus over him. Given what his motherās portrait is like, a constant stream of verbal abuse, at the very least, is not hard to imagine, nor is it a great mystery as to why he fled this home and ended up living with the Potters as a teenager.
This is also a pureblood family, much like the Malfoys or the Lestranges. They have a particular set of morals and customs that do not necessarily reflect the rest of the worldās. Blood purity, familial loyalty and keeping up the family name & reputation are clearly very central. Not such magnanimous things like loving your neighbor or giving to the poor. See the burned-off names on the family tapestry in the Black family home, for an illustration of what happens to those who do not uphold those values.
So Sirius returns to this house in OotP and canāt stand himself. Heās going stir-crazy, he starts fights with Snape basically to blow off steam, and then lets Snape get under his skin in return. He swans off to the Ministry of Magic to help Harry without any real plan or forethought. We see his fight with Bellatrix - heās enjoying himself immensely, then he slips up and he dies.
This is adult Sirius, by the way.
Teenage Sirius was all of this, plus the natural impetuousness and inexperience of youth. He seems to have a very black-and-white type of morality, and the familial loyalty he was taught at his parentsā knees has been shifted entirely to his friends instead. The target changed, the nature of it.. not necessarily.
He meets Severus Snape at the age of eleven and he hates him. And over the years at Hogwarts, that hatred only grows. Snape is everything Sirius personally hates - Dark magic, a Slytherin. Snape is also everything his family hated - half-blood, poor. Heās a neatly wrapped-up package of everything Sirius Black hates about himself and his family. So Snape is a natural target for Siriusās inward self-hatred to turn outward and slake itself on another.
And itās easy for Sirius to justify targeting Snape. Snape is a Slytherin. Snape likes Dark magic. Eventually Snape starts hanging out with the children of Death Eaters. He is āBadā.
And by their fifth year, Sirius deems that Snape might indeed become a threat to his friends. Therefore, it is only meet and right that he must be done away with.
In a certain way of looking at things, it makes perfect sense. To murder Snape is an act of justice because it is done to protect Siriusās friends. He knows Snape is suspicious of Remus Lupinās absences every month. So he uses this to his advantage.
How, exactly, Sirius managed to convince Snape to visit the Shack is not spelled out. I can only suspect that Sirius either passed the information along to him in some anonymous fashion, perhaps framing it as a letter from a āfriendā with altered handwriting and a fake signature.
Perhaps he goaded Snape, calling him a coward, and gave whatever the 70ā²s UK wizarding equivalent of I Triple Dog Dare Ya is, in front of the crowd of Slytherins that Snape was trying to impress and be accepted by, thus forcing him to do it to save face. Itās not said in the books, so all we can do is guess.
But I truly think it does not enter Siriusās mind that murdering Snape is not a morally defensible action. It makes perfect sense in his own head. Keep in mind this is a boy who was raised by Walburga Black. He might have rejected her and the rest of his family, but nobody suddenly just gains knowledge and wisdom they have never been taught, bestowed out of the sky.
As for Remus Lupin, well. I think Sirius assumed he would not be upset at having to pick bits of Snape out of his teeth in the morning, because he would see that Sirius did something that was purely to protect him and the other Marauders. I donāt think he really understood the full implications of it, because he didnāt think that far ahead (as we see he often does not).
Or that Remus would, in fact, be highly traumatized by having killed somebody (even Snape) as a werewolf, which was his greatest fear.
Or that this would, in itself, risk outing Remus as a werewolf to the rest of the school.
I do think Dumbledore would have tried to protect Remus, would have tried his best to cover up what the actual cause of Snapeās death was, because Dumbledore clearly did care about Remus, and it hardly would have been Remusās fault, but I personally think Remus would have left school of his own accord after such an incident. I donāt think, however, that Sirius would understand why, and that was his greatest failing as a teenager.
As an adult, I think Sirius did grow some, although he always retained an utter hatred of Snape (a mutual feeling obviously). He tells Harry that everyone has good and bad inside them. I think where Sirius sometimes struggles is acting on the good parts of himself and shutting the bad up. Or as one famous Alice once said, āI give myself very good advice, but I very seldom follow it.ā
The tragedy of Sirius is that he isnāt stupid. He isnāt lacking in wisdom entirely, but he finds it difficult to control himself, to control his emotions and to act on that wisdom which he often voices. (See also: his comments about judging people on how they treat his inferiors, and his later unkindness dealing with Kreacher). Itās not that he doesnāt want to do what is right, but that his emotions and impulses get the better of him in the end.
The real irony is that Sirius and Snape are similar in many ways. If they hadnāt hated one another so intensely from the day they met on the Hogwarts Express, they might have been able to be friends.
Snape is like a dog that has been kicked all his life, and now people are wondering why it bites.
WHY people write fanfictions where the ship donāt end up together? Like what is the logic??? Just to make everybody cry harder??? If I wanted sad love stories I would just look at my life.
