Les Saignantes (2005), a horror/thriller/sci-fi movie directed by Jean pierre Bekolo in cameroun.
A truly beautiful piece of Afrocentric feminist cinematography i’ve fallen in love with. I feel a particular connection to this film especially because it was not only released the year of my birth but also was made in my home country by a fellow cameroonian director. Much often, when discussing Classics when the subject is movies, (especially horror movies) Black African cinematography is left out of the conversation for reasons too obvious for me to begin stating.
Les Saignantes (2005) opens up a window for the watcher showcasing and insight on the life of a sex worker in early 2000’s Cameroon, touching themes such as sexual abuse, corruption, womanhood, morality, justice and more, with the added element of fictional beings native to the country’s culture as well as our internationally beloved vampires and some typically Cameroonian humor, ALL of which with a darkskin female cast.
It’s nothing short of an incredible work of art that should be universally known as such. a 10 in my book.
