The wildfires here are something else.
Stay cool folks
This comic pokes fun at the typical Canadian summer in Southern Ontario. Unbeknownst to people who aren't from here, summers in Canada can get hot. Really hot!
Sometimes it gets so hot that it becomes downright annoying. It's hard to describe, but at the height of a typical Toronto summer, the heat can feel punishingly relentless.
Now, I'm not naïve. I've been to countries closer to the equator, where intense heat is the norm year-round. Canadian summers pale by comparison, but that doesn't change the fact that they can still be unforgiving in their own way.
Which brings me to the real point of this post. Right now, Southern Ontario is under a heat dome. On some days, temperatures will feel like they're above 40°C, which can be very dangerous, especially for some of the most vulnerable members of our communities.
If you're without air conditioning, please take advantage of public parks with splash pads, libraries, shopping malls, and community centres to cool off. Please stay safe, and don't end up melting like the characters in this comic strip.
Stay cool, folks.
Michael Jackson
The musical legacy of Michael Jackson is undeniable. I can't think of any other pop star who has matched his talent and cultural influence. He created songs that, I believe, people will still be listening to 100 years from now—probably even longer.
When I found out that a movie was being made about his life, I knew I had to see it. Unfortunately—or fortunately, depending on how you look at it—the business of life got in the way, so this comic missed the excitement surrounding the film's release. But better late than never.
I'm going to carve out some time to see what I'm sure will be an excellent film about one of my musical heroes.
Contagious yawning
Like most people, I'm very susceptible to contagious yawning. Even when I'm wide awake, if I see someone yawn, I can't help but yawn myself. Curious about why this happens, I consulted the good old "interwebs" and, after a few quick Google searches, discovered the following:
Contagious yawning is primarily driven by empathy and social bonding, facilitated by the brain's mirror neuron system, which triggers the nonconscious mimicry of others' actions. While it feels like an automatic reflex, it is actually a complex social behaviour that typically develops around the age of four, coinciding with the maturation of empathy and theory of mind.
So, if you didn't know. now you do.
Did you yawn?
Sipping Tea
Due to unforeseen circumstances I wasn't able to table today at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival. At least I had Saturday.
My apologies to all who came out. I'll catch you next time.
