Hob sighed, his hands tightening around the gift.

“Yeah, I am.”

Dream tilted his head, studying him. “Do you not wish to?”

“I do,” Hob said.

Hob looked at the pink ribbon taped to the door, the princess balloons bobbing in the window. The muffled shrieks and laughter drifting from the house.

“I do,” he said softly. “It’s just sometimes it hurts, ya know?”

Dream was silent.

“Knowing you gotta leave, eventually?” he continued. “Knowing you’re going to hurt the people who never did anything but love you?”

The wind blew, stirring Dream’s coat while he continued to look at the door in silence. Hob hesitated, wondering if he’d upset his friend when Dream finally moved. He walked up the last few steps to stand beside Hob

“I was under the impression, Hob Gadling,” he started, voice quiet. He looked over at Hob, his eyes shining with starlight. “That leaving them with fond memories was a kindness.”

Hob swallowed, adjusting his grip on the gift. He looked at Dream and then back to the door.

He could do that. He had his own cherished memories of those he had lost. Of Eleanor and Robyn. Peggy. He would never give up those memories, no matter how much they stung.

They were the marks of a life lived, and reminders that he had once been loved.

He would outlive them. That was no question.

But he was here now. It was the now that mattered.

He had promised to be there.

Fond memories.

He could do that for Nellie and Lucy. Leave them memories like that, so they would never question that they had been loved.

He had ten years to do that.

Ten years to make sure they knew.
