" i would like to think not, lest they disgrace their high lady with idle gossip that could be overheard by the wrong person, especially with those from other courts lingering around. " seraphine mused, " βΈ» but i would not be surprised if a tray of tarts does not come your way for the next foreseeable future. " she retorted with a breathy laugh, " i know meilin does not starve you over there in star, so is it pure gluttony, then? "
kal waved his now empty hand flippantly, as if it could disperse the words she'd spoke from the very air. "it would take a far greater missteps for one to disgrace themselves," he replied lightly, knowing full well lords and ladies had said and done far worse and the consequences be damned.
the shadowsinger laughed, the deep and hearty noise echoed around them for a moment. "you could say that." he nodded in agreement, but kal had always chalked his ravenous appetite up to his ability and the direct correlation that it's constant use made him two things: hungry and tired. "greed, absolutely. excess, however? i would beg to differ." he told the high lady offering a jovial wink as he began to walk along the path once more.
β₯γγγ#2.γγγher eyebrow has been up since she first spotted him in the full glory of his gluttony, but now it arches up impossibly farther.γ"i think you would have been on that list regardless, dear kalisγ----γyour stomach has its own infamy."γshe's delighted to deliver this information to him, and even gives him a pat on the back, as mocking as it is genuine.γ"the dawn court has much to fear with you around, but perhaps they are forgiving. if not, i'll smuggle you a tart."γshe would more likely throw it at him, but at least her aim is impeccable.
his eyes widened upon hearing her words, but he made no attempt of retort, simply patted his rather full stomach as if to emphasis its mass further. though in truth, his armor had more padding than his gut. "there are far worse reasons i could be infamous," he replied with a friendly wink. "let us be glad this shall be the only cause, yes?"
kalis chuckled at her offer, "oh friend, i could never let you be at odds with our gracious hosts on my behalf." he told her as he leaned toward her to nudge her arm with elbow gently. "and there is no need," he started as a wide grin began to spread across his face.
"watch this," kal told her with a slight nod to a server standing in the corner of the garden. without any real effort on his part, the shadowsinger whisked three of the scrumptious treats off the tray. the tarts appeared in his hand and he couldn't help the giddy smile that formed on his lips. "my lady?" he offered her first. "just know if you take one, it means you have officially agreed to craft my bow," he added as an afterthought with a cackle.
β·Β Β Β Β Β she's grateful for his presenceβ a strong and stable fixture by her side as they stroll through the garden together. she offers polite smiles and brief yet warm greetings to familiar faces, posture ever so tense as she can't stomach the idea of letting her guard down for even one moment. no matter how beautiful and enticing the scenery of dawn may be, there's an inkling they entered the lion's den.
β would you like me to request a tray specially curated for you, kal ?Β β she smiles, teasing him, though her offer is made in earnest. admittedly the tarts are delicious, and she noticed servers gracefully evading their general direction. β iβm certain your never-ending appetite is the highest praise a chef can receive. β
he pursed his lips for the briefest of moments as he thought on her words, and let his head roll to the side slightly as he replied, "only if you think it wouldn't make look too gluttonous." kal smirked, though in truth the shadowsinger didn't care how it made him appear. "never-ending?" he echoed with a gasp as he clutched at his chest as if she wounded him deeply.
but all the while they walked through the garden and the pair conversed about absolutely nothing of note, kalis was busy doing something of great importance. it always felt so bizarre for a few moments, when the tendrils of shadow reached out and touched something new for the first time. something entirely unfamiliar, and yet, it brought with it a plethora of new information. "how do you feel, my lady?" kal asked quietly, just loud enough for meilin to hear him. it was a vague question, but he'd asked it of her enough in their time together for her to understanding its meaning. do you feel safe?

he'd lost count of exactly how many tarts he'd already shoved into his mouth, but kal knew for a fact that he'd cleared the trays of four different servers. each one seemingly more aggravated than the last, but they were too good to pass up. he'd even begun to feel full, though if given the chance he'd clear anotherβor as much as he could.
"what do you think are the chances they return to the kitchens and warn each other who to avoid?" he chuckled to the party guest beside him almost hoping that wasn't the case.
cauldron bless, itβs KALIS REDWOOD, KNIGHT of STAR, born to the realm as a HIGH-FAE and sworn to it as its SHADOWSINGER. they have walked this realm for EIGHT HUNDRED AND TWENTY EIGHT YEARS and they can be JOCULAR but also DOGMATIC. they carry with them the echo of AN EERIE DARKNESS THAT MIRRORS MOVEMENTS, BRUISED KNUCKLES FLECKED WITH DRIED BLOOD, AND A LEATHER BOUND NOTEBOOK INKED WITH KNOWLEDGE. i do hope someone asks them to dance before the night is through.
full name: kalis redwood
title: knight of star
occupation: personal guard to the high lord, formerly guard to both twins
race: high-fae
sexuality: pansexual
moral alignment: chaotic neutral
kalis remembers very little from his childhood, and the few things he does remember he would prefer not to speak of. there are only a select handful in his life who know all the details of his past, who've heard the story of the hardships and tragedy his family faced. all to protect his identity.
when he was still a boy, his parents began to notice itβwhat he could do and how the shadows appeared to follow him. clinging to his skin like a thick oil that couldn't be so easily wiped away. they moved for the first time shortly after, kal's parents terrified what it could mean if anyone learned of the unique ability, scared how others would long to control him just as kal could control the shadows.
his brother was born many decades and relocations later, and much to everyone's great relief, their youngest child was no more special than other high-fae and didn't need to harbor the same fears. and by then, kalis had learned what it really meant to control the darkness, how to listen when it sang to him and understand the sweet melody it longed to share. but he also leaned how to do so discreetly. and the need to move ceased for a while.
it was an autumn solstice that had started like any other he knew and the sunny day had the whole family in good spirits. they'd all been drinking in celebration and kal never saw them comingβnot until it was too late. the brightness made him unable to defend his family and he was forced to watch his parents be slain. the two sons barely escaped with their lives.
they spent the next several decades constantly on the move while searching for the culprits who destroyed the ones they'd loved the most. but they had little success and the brothers could feel the distance between them growing until one day, he was gone. and kal was all alone.
he continued on that way for longer than he likes to admit, the only friends he made in that time were in the shadows, and if he were to be honestβnot the most cheerful of company. he'd never intended to cross paths with any fae of noble birth and tried his best to steer clear of the courts entirely, but sometimes it wasn't possible. and perhaps it was the cauldrons work that brought him to the star court when they most needed someone to protect the high lady's children.
he was not so easy to convince, at first, insisting he would never be able to provide the twins with the adequate protection they deserved. by chance, the very day he was departing the star court, kal found himself in a situation that proved just how worthy he might be of the title of knight.
kal tried to hide it at first, just how much he enjoyed himself and the duty he'd been tasked to. he formed bonds and friendships he'd never imagined possible and there was suddenly never a shortage of people to converse with. his entire life kal felt as if he'd been forced into the shadows, but it was finally by choice now.

when he was younger, and his parents were still alive, he couldn't fight. and certainly not enough to save their lives. everything changed after that, refusing to allow himself to be so defenseless. he's now proficient in numerous forms of combat and with different styles of weapons.
weapon preference are dual straight swords, but he always has smaller blades and throwing stars hidden on his person. easily accessible
he's been with the star court for the last one hundred and ninety two years
he's very playful and loves to have a good laugh, but even more to make someone else laugh. it's not something he got to enjoy for most of his life so he wants to take advantage of it now while he can
he LOVES secrets and some hot, juicy goss. kal goes out of his way to keep his shadows listening for anything that might be good, but he doesn't have any real reason to use it
he's always been loyal to both the twins, and put his life on the line a number of times to keep them safe from harm, but he's always been far closer and spent more time with one, meilin. he feels terrible for how her brother has been elevated to high lord, and though he's now supposed to be his guard alone, kal finds himself reluctant to fall in line with the changes
