he'd lost count of exactly how many tarts he'd already shoved into his mouth, but kal knew for a fact that he'd cleared the trays of four different servers. each one seemingly more aggravated than the last, but they were too good to pass up. he'd even begun to feel full, though if given the chance he'd clear another—or as much as he could.
"what do you think are the chances they return to the kitchens and warn each other who to avoid?" he chuckled to the party guest beside him almost hoping that wasn't the case.
" i would like to think not, lest they disgrace their high lady with idle gossip that could be overheard by the wrong person, especially with those from other courts lingering around. " seraphine mused, " ⸻ but i would not be surprised if a tray of tarts does not come your way for the next foreseeable future. " she retorted with a breathy laugh, " i know meilin does not starve you over there in star, so is it pure gluttony, then? "

his shadows rattle within their containment. he can never quite slow their thudding in the same way he dampens his own heart, tucked behind some curtains in his ribcage, happy to hide. how he wishes he could do the same, in some peaceful corner somewhere in the dark. fortunately, the tender rays of dawn filter his theatrics into something palatable for the fae grazing about the flowers. he is studying them, as always. many carry a familiar face, though they'd fail to recognize him in return. he's about to muse on how fortunate that is, until he is spoken to, and he shakes off the thought with a polite nod. "YOU HAVE CHOSEN THE PERFECT MOMENT: AM I TRULY BETTER THAN DEWDROP CAKES FOR COMPANY?"
" unfortunately for you, i do not find much to be better then dewdrop cakes ⸻ especially not the fruit flavored ones. " the high lady taunted with a smile, said dewdrop cake already half eaten in her pale hands. " now, tell me, why is it have i chosen the perfect moment? " she asked, eyebrow raising as she brought the sweet cake to her lips.
oh, how she loves this. the grandeur, the spectacle, the rose-scented bloom of blood in the air. she's flush from it all, but she's grateful for the pink on her cheeks anyway. that warm feeling lingers as she takes a turn around a discreet corner of the gardens. sometimes there's so much in her head that she seeks solace in the quiet, but the echo becomes a piercing amplification instead. not in the loveliness of the dawn court. here, especially in the sanctuary of nature, her heart turns the same gentle hue as the air around her. it allows for her gasp of surprise to be playful rather than sharp upon someone catching her in the act of reflection. "and what say you? sneaking up on people on such a charming day?"
" forgive me, spring lady. " seraphine said softly, giving the other an apologetic smile. " i've often been told i step too lightly, i do not mean to sneak up on anybody. " the high lady of moon gave a nod of her head, to show she meant no harm in her careful steps. " and what of you? this corner seems seldom occupied, are you feeling well? " seraphine herself had not been looking for a break from the festitives, but rather, was exploring the garden in it's entirety ⸻ curious as to what beautiful secrets a garden in dawn may hold.

seraphine wishes she could remember her mother, but as her father told her only once ⸻ her mother perished only days after she was born. one of the very last casualties of the blight, they said. she never learned anything about her from her father, for the former high lord of moon would never speak of his deceased wife. her mother was a portrait on the wall that haunted yet also comforted serephine. the image of her mother almost felt like the moon itself, untouchable yet always illuminating her way through the dark. her nanny would tell her stories about her mother, about what a wonderful lady of the moon she made, regal and as serene like the celestial rock in the night sky. serephine swore she would be just like her mother, only she would be high lady of moon and she would bring her court back to greatness after the blight wiped out so many of them.
it was no surprise to her when the cauldron stripped her father of the high ruler title and it transferred to her ⸻ she knew he would never let it go willingly, but she was patient and was willing to bide her time. seraphine considers herself ready for what lies ahead, for whatever it takes to ensure moon is finally healed and shining once again. though, she is cautious and wary of all others. no court other then their sister court, star, came to moon's aid several thousands of years ago when the blight plagued them and only them. seraphine is distrusting, but watchful. waiting to see which courts can be trusted and which cannot.
