Hetalia
Honestly I really didn't like this show. It's funny in spots but its mostly just boring and annoying and the jokes get old real fast - looking at you, Italy. Besides the fact that I didn't find it entertaining, it's also just kind of terrible when you consider the real-world historical context and events that are supposedly being represented in the show.
Hetalia takes place roughly during and around the time of WW1 and WW2, so I guess about 1900-1950, though the show's sense of time is very loose and frankly confusing. Most of the time spent seems to be concentrated around WW2, which only makes it worse to consider that these 3 cute anime boys who we're watching having fun and doing whatever are actually supposed to represent countries that were actively committing horrible atrocities. I mean, Germany in the show is this sort of gruff and direct but kindhearted guy who's kind of endearing except for the fact that he's LITERALLY NAZI GERMANY. I mean seriously the perspective this anime takes is absurd. Of course, this being an anime, the representation of Japan is just as bad, as in Japan is way too good in the show considering the amount of seriously vile things the Japanese military has done.
The problem is, the premise is already flawed from the beginning. Representing entire countries, with their complex histories and diverse populations, as a single person will never work out well when you consider that virtually every major nation has at least one absolutely terrible aspect of its history. Naturally no one wants to focus on that though, but if you only take the good things about a country, that's not great either because now you're just ignoring history. There's also just the fact that countries are not these monolithic entities, so any singular representation of a country will by necessity engage in stereotype. And my goodness does this show engage in stereotype. The representation of Italy is perhaps the most in-your-face about it, but it's not exactly subtle for the other countries as well, particularly the USA and France. Maybe the show is trying to point out these stereotypes to show how silly they are, but with the way they show them so incessantly, it really doesn't feel like that. So, the entire idea of turning nations into people is already bound to turn out badly, and then when you decide to do that in the time period of WW2, it's just a disaster.
Hi! I can see why you didn't like the show. It does talk about historical events that happened in real life. This anime uses light-heartedness to mask the ugly of some of these events. The characters all represent a country, so your frustrations about Germany and Japan are understandable. Germany and Japan were committing terrible acts against its citizens in real life. Germany tried to wipe out an entire ethnicity at that. I do think the point of the show was to talk about historical events in a lighter version compared to a more gruesome and realistic version. I agree that the stereotypes are too much, but I think they are used to show the power stereotypes have to shape our perceptions and interactions with other countries.
