It was fun rocking two NLives a couple weeks ago for @nordstrom at South Coast Plaza with the wonderful @ksomers1 and in San Jose with the voice known as @kevglam. It's National DJ Day today! (Yay!) DJing fascinated me when I was young. It allowed me to make a living playing music for others. It has allowed me to meet many interesting people and easily make hundreds of thousands of people happy and dancing over the time I’ve been doing this. There is this amazing feeling that only DJs know about. When you drop the right song at the right time and get that big reaction from the crowd, you know you got 'em. There is no other feeling like it. I want to shoutout all of my clients and friends who I have worked with, my DJ friends, and the DJs I’ve had the good fortune of working with in all kinds of capacities. How I went from musical director to actor in 3 days…  Since December, I’ve been part of a creative team as musical director for the musical Last Stop On Market Street. Last Stop On Market Street is a best-selling children’s book that has been adapted for the stage. The music is done by Lamont Dozier (of Holland-Dozier-Holland Motown fame. He’s helped write TONS of Motown hits!) and his son Paris.   We were supposed to do this production in 2020 at @southcoastrep, but that little thing called a pandemic got in the way.  The good news is that SCR brought it back as soon as theaters could start working again! 🙌🏾 So, since the middle of 2021, we’ve been putting a lot of work behind the scenes for months, getting ready for first rehearsal early December. Let me tell you, COVID did a number on this production 😬 Myself and a few others got hit with it last month. I spent Xmas on my own. (Thank goodness for FaceTime!) The story that continues is crazy…plenty of Zoom rehearsals, lots of orange juice, and a tech week that got pushed back so we could all heal up! In a crazy plot twist, I’m now subbing in for one of the actors and am now performing in the show! I literally had 3 days to learn lines, choreography, and blocking. This last week has been a blur… 😵‍💫 But, we had our first preview today and it went amazing! We have three more shows coming up next weekend. It’s fun to be a part of something that stretches the boundaries of what is possible. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Earlier this week, I DJed for my guy Dan “The Man” Martell for his SaaS Academy intensive. These are always a good time.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Because of obvious circumstances, all in-person events basically moved online. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But, now that the world has been opening up, this was the first “hybrid” event I played for. This means they held an in-person event in Vancouver, but people could still stream all over the world. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So here I am in Los Angeles, playing music for everyone in Vancouver AND playing for people globally, from the UK to Ireland to New Zealand, AT THE SAME TIME!!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And…it worked! I learned that Melvin, a high school friend, passed away last week. It is/was a shock to me and to those that knew him. We lost touch after high school but reconnected at a reunion a few months ago. He was doing extremely well for himself. - He was a loving husband. - He was a dedicated father of 3. - I learned he got his doctorate in education. - He was a teacher. - He wrote a book - The McKinnens. It's a really unfortunate loss of a good man who was taking care of himself and his family. Unfortunately, he was the sole breadwinner, supporting his wife as she is going to nursing school. Hear me out: I'm glad this album didn't win a Grammy for Record of the Year.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I was browsing through records for an all vinyl set last month. I love this album and had to pull it out the crates! I honestly think people slept on this one. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ MJ only got one Grammy with this album. It was for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And he wasn't too happy about it. After the Grammys were over, Michael said "It was totally unfair that it didn't get Record of the Year and it can never happen again." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If he did win for Record of the Year, I'm honestly not sure we would have had Thriller. Saddened to hear about the loss of Baba Zumbi of Zion I. I first learned of Zion I while working at The Basement, the illest underground record store in the San Fernando Valley. I remember seeing their album Mind Over Matter. Zumbi’s lyrics over Amp Live’s beats were a great match! I loved that they did their own thing, like rapping over drum and bass beats on the album! While at UCSD, the Hip Hop Club got to bring him out to perform at Porters Pub. I had the good fortune of even being able to open for him at that show as part of the Freedom Writers. (Shoutouts to the Dialectx crew too, who were also openers!) We also brought them out to Galoka to rock a set. It was a packed house that night and a successful show. As an artist, I loved that he made it work independently. It’s hard to do, but they did it and continue to do it. What I also remember of him is that he was a good person and so was everyone else who was with him. It’s a definite loss for the Bay and for Hip Hop. Prayers up for his family and his crew.
