Scene:

Me in my office swamped with work

Boss (owner of the office) walks in

Boss: I need you to do X persons job, because it isn’t being done right and you do it better than I do

Me: pushes aside the 8 other things boss has given me to do or check “give me a few minutes”

Me: logs into other system, checks what’s needing to be done, “no, I can’t do this because Y didn’t do their job correctly so neither X nor anyone else can do this”

Boss: “send Y a message about what they did wrong. Let X know what they need to do to rectify this. Include me in all messages”

Me: does what I am told but am baffled the whole time, why couldn’t boss do this themself, why do I have to send the messages? I would put more weight on them if they came from Boss instead of Coworker. Also, when I get scolded in a few days for being even more swamped do I bring up that it’s because Boss keeps giving me not my job to do?

Modern movies and shows tend to have very unbalanced mixing. Also, a common trend in modern movies is more realistic dialogue (mumbling) that is not as crisp as it was in previous eras of film making.

I wonder if I could run a presidential election with my platform being to promise to stay awake during meeting and spend less time golfing than Trump has. I know it’s a super low bar, but I feel like these are campaign promises I could keep, and also make me a far better candidate for presidency than the current administration

"It doesn't help your credibility to exaggerate, most employers wouldn't literally work you to death" like, I used to work in distribution. If booking a truck driver for back to back shifts until they fall asleep at the wheel, crash, and die counts as being worked to death, I have personally met employers who've worked employees to death and gotten away with a slap on the wrist. It may not be universal, but it's a hell of a lot more common than a lot of us would prefer to think.

The FAA had to explicitly make rules about how long pilots have to have off between shifts, and how far away from their home you can pin their home airport, because it doesn't mean shit that someone has 10 hours between shifts if they have a 2 hour commute each way. They had to make these rules because multiple passenger airplanes crashed because the pilots were exhausted from tight scheduling. Employers won't just work you to death, they'll take a hundred random customers with you.
