Genya Shinazugawa is amazing.
It was easy to write him off as a character that wouldn't get popular, rough and angry and foul-mouthed. His backstory and etc. (and also how he gets flustered around girls, how adorable) changed how people felt about him, but Gotouge didn't leave it at that.
He never thought ill of Sanemi, didn't blame him, even as Sanemi berated him and refused to acknowledge him. He felt hurt and confused, sure, but never blamed his brother. Instead, he blamed himself, and he must have done it a thousand times and more over the years. All he wanted to do was apologise for what he said to Sanemi, and it was all he thought about when he was going to die during the part where his backstory was revealed.
"I won't get to apologise before I die."
That's what he was thinking—but in the end he got what he wanted.
He slowly bled to death on the floor after literally getting cut in half, the pain and the knowledge that he was going to die must have been terrifying. And yet, he worried for his comrades first, thought about how he could help in fighting UP1, told Gyomei to treat Tokito; he was selfless even as he faced death.
He felt relieved that Sanemi was okay. And apologised over and over to him, I'm sorry for being a burden, sorry I blamed you for Mom's death, thank you for protecting me, thank you for being the nicest brother ever.
"You must have had a hard time." he said, failing to acknowledge that he himself didn't have it easy either. "I don't want you to die.", as he slowly faded away himself.
He would never get to have a nice long talk with Sanemi and reconcile properly, he didn't even die as a human. It was so unfair to him, and he didn't even complain. I briefly wondered if he even cared about himself at all.
Genya didn't deserve to die, and I am still so upset.
