Colour Management Task: Defining Gamut and Colour Space 

What is gamut?

Gamut is the complete range of colour within a colour space.

2. What is a colour space?

A colour space is a range of colours on a spectrum that can be represented by a visual model.

3. What two colour spaces do most DSLR cameras offer?

sRGB and Adobe RGB.

4. What colour space can most computer monitors display?

Most computer monitors displays offer the sRGB colour space.

5. If you switch from sRGB to Adobe RGB on your camera what colours will you see an improvement in?

The colours that will improve the most are green and red tones, whereas the more blue tones will remain mostly unchanged.

6. When you change the colour space in photoshop what does it do?

When changing from sRGB to a colour space with a higher range of colours it will change the; hue, saturation and lightness.

7. Name a larger colour space than Adobe RGB

8. What can happen to a digital image if you map colours to a really large colour space?

When mapping a digital image to a larger colour space the hue and saturation of colours will increase, however this means some of the tonal range will be lost.

Sustainable Development Goals: Research Task

For the upcoming Environmental E-zine task one of the main objectives is to link the theme of the final E-zine and the images produced to one or more of the sustainable development goals.

This project was intended to link to the Cop26 event that took place in November 2021 wherein a large number of world leaders and politicians gathered in Glasgow in order to discuss worldwide issues relating to the Sustainable development goals and possible solutions.

In preparation for the task I have decided to focus on a few of the sustainable development goals, in particular the ones relating to natural landscapes and the environment such as; Climate action and Life on Land.

These two Development Goals in particular stood out to me as I feel these are related to some of the most pressing worldwide issues such as climate change and the loss of biodiversity.

Furthermore, when it comes to taking photographs I have the most personal experience with capturing natural landscapes and elements of the natural world in general which could prove to be extremely beneficial moving forward in studying these topics.

One way in which I am thinking about linking to these topics through imagery is by photographing the destruction of some natural environments for example, litter, rubble, charred and chopped wood, industrial areas, etc. Basically anything interrupting, obstructing, or destroying natural areas/habitats could be potential subjects for my project.

In addition to this, due to the inclusion of the Climate Action development goal I could create some contrast within the e-zine through also shooting subjects related to sustainability rather than just the destruction of natural landscapes.

Macro Photography Workshop 5: Single Use Plastic

In order to prepare for the upcoming Tiny Worlds project we were given the opportunity to attend a number of workshops to increase our knowledge of macro photography and proficiency with the equipment required.

Below are the final optimised images from Workshop 5 which focused on the theme of Single Use Plastic, therefore the class were instructed to comprise a large amount of the images from single use plastic waste while following the theme of sustainability present within each of the other workshops from this project.

Macro Workshop 4: Fast Fashion

In order to prepare for the upcoming Tiny Worlds project we were given the opportunity to attend a number of workshops to increase our knowledge of macro photography and proficiency with the equipment required.

Below are the final optimised images from workshop 4 which focused on the theme of fast fashion, therefore the class were instructed to comprise a large amount of the images with clothing and fabrics of any kind in order to form a landscape image.

For this photoshoot I planned to use flannel shirts in a variety of different colours in order to create different elements of a landscape, for example, green checked shirt for a grassy hill in the foreground, grey checked shirt to form a mountain shape in the midground and a blue checked shirt to construct the sky in the background.

Visualising Photographs: Making a Drink Task

This task focused on making a clear plan for a series of images and then conducting the photoshoot along with a storyboard in order to visualise the images you will be creating before beginning the photoshoot.

Macro Photography Workshop 3: Nature Landscapes

In order to prepare for the upcoming Tiny Worlds project we were given the opportunity to attend a number of workshops to increase our knowledge of macro photography and proficiency with the equipment required.

Below are the final optimised images from Workshop 3 which focused on the theme of objects from the natural world. The class were instructed to prepare and bring in objects from nature in order to try and construct a landscape image using macro equipment.

Due to the greater detail in the natural objects it was slightly easier to get a sharp focus than it was for the water waste themed images.

Emulating Andy Hughes: Dominant Wave Theory

In order to prepare for the upcoming theme of waste and sustainability in folio 2 a few months ago we were given a task to try and emulate the work created by photographer, Andy Hughes and his Dominant Wave Theory project.

Macro Photography Workshop 2: Water Waste

In order to prepare for the upcoming Tiny Worlds project we were given the opportunity to attend a number of workshops to increase our knowledge of macro photography and proficiency with the equipment required.

Below are the Final Optimised Images from Workshop 2, which focused on the theme of water waste. This resulted in the class photographing oil and water that would be dropped onto a glass pane suspended over a colourful background in order to give the liquid some colour, form and tone.

However, due to the macro equipment the images had an extremely shallow depth of field which meant that it would be extremely difficult to get the images in sharp focus.

Macro Photography Workshop 1: Food Mould/Waste

In order to prepare for the upcoming Tiny Worlds project we were given the opportunity to attend a number of workshops to increase our knowledge of macro photography and proficiency with the equipment required.

Below are the results of Workshop 1 , which revolved around the theme of food waste/mould meaning we we would have to leave some food out to decay in preparation for the class. I chose to photograph the bananas as they were one of the only of my subjects to show real results, in the future it's maybe best to not leave the food in a tub outside to freeze over time.
